BTW, I just picked this one up over the weekend, replacing a 5+ year old Sony STR-DE945 that I paid approx $500 for back then. I barely used it, have little kids and cannot pump up the volume enough to take full advantage of it (not sure how good it was before, but I believe it was a top of the line consumer model??)
I've read all the good things of the Onkyo new models, and the deals on the xx5 old models, and didn't feel I needed to spend more than $300+ on a new receiver based on my previous usage so I opted for the Sony 720 from CC with my AAA discount came to just over $250 OTD.
I only have a PS3 and HD-DVD player connected so this receiver was all I needed since the PS3 decodes the stream. I played my Celine Dion blu-ray on it and it was awesome. Then I was able to test out Ice Age with DTS HDMA on Sunday so the kiddies could watch too, and the sound was awesome as well. Of course the volume was never over 30 so that was prob the highest I would go for now.
I have a set of "packaged" 5.1 satellite speaker set from Sony, also a bout 4-5 years old, and will be looking for something new soon, possibly the Polk M50s or R50s for the fronts.
So I know people have bashed this receiver and the line quite a bit since announced and telling people to consider saving a little more and buying a "better" receiver around the $300-400 range, but at mid-$200s this is a good deal for those that cannot pump up the volume too much because of kids or living in a condo, apartment, etc. And also seeing that I just packed away a $500-then receiver that was barely used, this one made sense to me.
