The Official AVS 'Mobile DTV' (M-DTV) Topic! - Page 15

Wow, for a moment there I had a flashback to FLO TV!

Okay, that has passed now. Since I do live in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul DMA, I would sure like to score one of the free Elgato MyDTV dongles.

I think it will also be interesting to see which, if any, of the devices capable of Mobile DTV (ATSC-M/H), will also be able to tune in regular ATSC. At this point, there is not a great need in many areas for NTSC, but I suspect that there are still a fair number of low power translator stations on NTSC. I can't recall at the moment if they, too, now have a deadline to switch, or if they can remain as is for an indefinite period of time.

Analog (NTSC) deadline is Sep, 2015.

^^^^^ nice idea but you're limited on the number of stations available in your area. For my area, only 5 stations are available. 2 I'd watch and the other 3 I have no desire to. Hopefully more stations of interest will be added later on.

They did update the Dyle website, too.

Still only 5 stations for the two zip codes in my area. Fox, an Independent, NBC, Qubo, and Telemundo.

As I posted earlier, I really think it would have been nice to have the device be capable of BOTH ATSC AND ATSC-M/H. Perhaps the Belkin Dyle Mobile TV will have both!

We'll see. Mobile TV, for me, is not a big deal. It's bad enough that people walk around and into things talking on their phones, but now they can watch tv? Meh!
They could already walk around watching TV on their phones, but now they can do it without eating up data off the data plan. Or that's the theory, anyway.

My two units arrived...hope to play a bit this afternoon before being busy for the next 2 weeks..of course, since the NFL-FOX does not allow us to carry any NFL games on MH..I'll have to look at the other guys in town to start with..

I look forward to your review. I am holding out for an Android version, but we will see if it happens.
Ok.. I connected up with my iphone 4s running ios 5.1.1 just fine..setup; registration and initial scan was quick and easy and found all 8 local streams with these results:

3-1 WBTV CBS (No Audio,No EPG, CC OK)
9-1 WSOC ABC (Audio OK, EPG & CC OK)
18-10 WCCB FOX (No EPG, No Pgm at this time, NFL rights block)
18-11 WCCB WX (No EPG, Audio Ok)
36-1 WCNC NBC (No Audio,No EPG, CC OK)
46-1 WJZY CW (Audio Ok, No EPG No CC)
64-1 WAXN IND (Audio Ok, EPG & CC OK)
64-3 WAXN WX (No EPG, No Audio Provided with service)

Note that this is one of the first units released and obviously some work is needed, which is not completely unexpected.

Audio and video on all channels (when present) is very good.
With my iphone case on, the dongle easily disconnects and is unreliable, so the case has to come off. Even then any slight bump causes a disconnect. This often would hang the app and give me a "The connected USB device is not supported". Also "EyeTv Mobile would like to communicate with the Elgato EveTV Mobile" (Allow / Ignore) pop up occurs fairly often.
The app will allow L-R swipe between channels. This promptly hangs the app. Don't do that.
Indoor here at home..Reception on the closest stations using the small telescopic antenna, WCCB, WSOC, and WAXN all @ 7miles was fairly solid. The others @ +30 miles often produced "No Content" errors when the signal dropped out.
Overall, having played with it so far..I don't think the typical Apple user will tolerate the current performance on their iphone-ipad. For me personally, an easily disconnected dongle hanging off the side with a pull up antenna is a real negative. I very much prefer my Monsoon Multimedia Vulkano app that works anywhere.

That's all for now.. time to pack for the next 2 weeks which are far more pressing with very little play time in an area without MH. rolleyes.gif I'll ride down the interstate tomorrow am and see how well it does for how far.

Bob,

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I anticipated that the connector would be problematic. To make matters worse, some people will have to use an adapter to go from original to Thunderbolt connector. Maybe a standalone portable TV that does NTSC, regular ATSC, and Dyle will come along. As of right now, it is a little bit hard to be optimistic, however. (Of course, the need for NTSC is decreasing as time goes on.)

As a side note, I tried the Monsoon Vulkano and I think they have some great devices. I ended up going with both a Sliing Adapter AND a SlingBox PRO-HD. Yes, I know that it is overkill, but I have the ability to get TV1 content via the PRO-HD and TV2 content via the Sling Adapter. I do also like the integrated ATSC tuner in the PRO-HD.

I caught the tail end of the first Dyle TV commercial I've seen this morning while getting ready to leave for work. It was a locally inserted spot on KSDK about a half hour into the Today show. Unfortunately, it was on a set that didn't have a DVR and I wasn't paying much attention to the TV at the moment, so I didn't catch the details until the last two r three seconds of the short spot.

I set DVR to record the rest of the Today show when I left. I'll scan it this evening and see if they broadcast it again and i can catch a video of it.

Cheers!

I saw the Dyle Mobile TV Service commercial earlier today on KARE-11.

Long story short, the HDHomeRun driver runs with the access level of whatever program is using it. Most software firewalls won't block outbound connections, so telling the HDHomeRun to tune a specific channel works, but the video stream is an inbound connection from the HDHomeRun, which does get blocked. Adding the exception allows the program to receive the stream.

Sounds nice! and for what it does the $299 retail doesn't seem too bad.
Jim, is Dyle currently broadcasting on KARE? I see you saw a commercial on KARE a month back, wonder if they are active and if any other stations in MSP broadcast Dyle?
I think KARE-11 is up, but I have no way to tune that right now. According to Rabbit Ears, it is up.

Exclusive: FCC OKs Test of New TV Transmission Standard

Station owner says it has support from other broadcasters, vendors, standards bodies

WNUV will conduct its test mostly in overnight hours (1 a.m. to 5 a.m.). Between those hours, it will replace its ATSC signal with the test OFDM DVB-T2 signal, receivable by only a handful of devices. ...

It will be most interesting to see how this works for mobile. Nice to see that Sinclair still wants to be an actual broadcaster.

It's not for Mobile. DVB-T2 is for stationary. Anyone saying otherwise is a liar. It just can carry lot more data than ATSC or DVB-T.

An excerpt: The FCC released the experimental authorization application from WNUV on Wednesday. It contains much more detail on the planned experiments. While the FCC’s letter only mentions DVB-T2, the application says WNUV anticipates that after testing DVB-T2, it will progress to testing DVB-Lite, DVB-NGH, and a "non-standard variant derived from experimental outputs."

The Lite option does appear intended to address mobile issues. But, if I understand it correctly, a Lite mobile service would reduce the bandwidth available for other services such as HDTV for stationary reception. Much like ATSC's current scheme.
