2008 Samsung HL61A750 LED DLP owners thread and FAQ - Page 51

I was looking at a device that converted IR remote commands to bluetooth, to control my PSP with something like a Harmony One. It's powered by batteries or USB, and I was wondering if the USB port on the 67/61 would power it?

The green push I had ranged from really bad to almost unnoticeable. I never saw it on faces, since they tend to be well illuminated and flesh toned. The majority of stuff that had an unnatural light green tint to it was backgrounds, dark areas, shadows and things that were supposed to be gray. I think this was definitely a grayscale problem. The problem was most noticeable on SD broadcasts. It was least noticeable on live/sports HD broadcasts. I will say, once your eyes are set to look for green push, you sometimes see it where it really isn't. A few times I'd see something that looked bad, only to see the same greenish hue on another set.

I did see the standard DVD version of Jumper on that set and I seem to remember the green push being somewhat more pronounced in that movie.

Better late than never.

I suspect that they were sold out as there was a big sale last week. As Costco was the only place I have seen the 750 series, it might not hurt to make a call to local warehouse...if you want one.

I bought one at the sale and I am gloating. It's awesome.

Well, after a very long delay, my 67A750 finally arrived on Saturday. It was frustrating because I bought it from a local PC Richard's and it was supposed to have been delivered 2 weeks ago. I already had a calibration set for this Wednesday with Eliab from Avical and I've been running the TV 24/7 to get the needed 50 hours on it. Out of the box, the picture looked really good. I used the settings at the beginning of the thread. I used the test patterns on the service menu and the geometry was off just a drop. A minor pull on the top of the set made it pretty close to perfect. I don't notice anything when the TV is on. The manufacture date was 4/18/08 and it had firmware 1004. I had already prepared my flash drive with 1005 and the update went smoothly.

The vertical viewing angle is better than I expected. My seating distance is approx 12 ft and sitting off to the side a couple of feet at that distance was not a noticeable difference. I went with a Tech Craft BEL57B as my stand, which has a height of 21 3/4 inches. The 2 shelves each have a clearance of 8 1/4 inches, which is enough to fit my center channel and my anticipated Denon 2309ci, if it ever comes out. I was concerned that the stand was higher than ideal, but from 12 feet away, the horizontal viewing angle is fine.

HD over cable (I have Cablevision on Long Island in NY), looks really good. In fact, SD looks pretty good too. I put in the Blue Ray version of Bucket List on my PS3 and was very impressed. I can only imagine how good this will look after calibration!

One quirk that I noticed was that after manually adjusting the settings, if I changed the input or turned the TV off, the setting defaulted back to the factory settings. I spoke with Eliab about it and he told me it was stuck in factory mode and that he could fix it. As I said earlier, Eliab is coming on the 30th to do the calibration. I'll let everyone know how it goes. So far, I am very happy about this purchase!

What are you using to power up those (120mm computer case??) fans that you have on a couple shelves?

The cabinet my wife bought has really bad airflow out the back & I have considered mounting some big 180mm fans in the back of each bay for airflow but I am not sure how to get them to power on... I thought about modding a computer PSU to do it but I'm not sure about powering them all from that...

The place I ordered them from includes the power supply and a splitter. It's just an old 4 pin connector like used to be in the PCs that has 12V.

This is where I bought the fans from, http://www.coolerguys.com/sff21.html.
they are 8.7dBA whisper quiet fans. they used to have a kit that had the power supply, adapter, vibration dampeners, etc. but I don't know if they still have that.

I first tried both the configurations mentioned in mike_pro's guide and then I basically tried every PS3/TV setting combination I could. Nothing seemed to really make a difference.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem with their set? Could this be an issue with the PS3?

Thanks for any advice.

I think that it's an issue with the PS3 in general. When I plug the PS3 into my computer monitor, I get the same exact banding on the monitor as well...

I do not have an answer to your question (sorry) but I kind of doubt that it would. I did just get an IR2BT and it works flawlessly to control my ps3. I am VERY happy with it, as I am now back to just one remote! (harmony one). Just wanted to share my enthusiasm for the product (IR2BT)

So, I see from the first post that Mike uses one seting for watching TV and a different setting for viewing movies. Is this the norm that most people follow for this set? Do you just switch from one to the other depending on what you are watching?

For me, I like to view anything that's video-based on Standard, which seems a bit brighter and more "immediate", i.e. "live" (specifically sports and news). For film-based sources, I prefer Movie mode.

EDIT: To go along with what moonhawk says below, for daytime viewing of movies, I generally just raise the Dynamic Contrast to Low; at night I turn it off. That seems to be all I need to do to compensate for changes in ambient light. For sports, etc. on Standard, I generally can leave the Dynamic Contrast on Off, day or night, since it is usually bright enough.

What I'm doing is working on two setups, one for daytime, and one for nightime.

Most of the movies I've watched have been pay-per-view HD, of free HD movie channels (HDNMV, MGM) as I don't have a BR player yet, so I don't know if I'll need a separate setup for that.

But I have too many windows in my viewing room to effectively control the light during the day, so I have a brighter setup for then.

Others may have a different approach.

Another thing I've noticed is that color settings that work on one station may not work on all of them. I would think that there was an agreed upon standard, but that is either not the case or some stations do not adhere to it very closely.

I have to exchange my 67" and I'm not looking forward to it! I ordered from Vanns which only has curbside delivery. The carrier took an extra 2 days transporting it from what they quoted me to my local terminal and then they only deliver out in my area 2 days out of the week so had to wait for that day to roll around. 15 minutes before the delivery time was up they arrived just after it started pouring rain. Box was damaged on the bottom portion I could see before they ever took it out of the truck and now soaked by the time it was in the house. We opened it up and the screen was fine--couldn't see any damage and figured that the styrofoam block must have taken the hit.
Last night I was hooking up a speaker wire to my reciever under the TV and using a flashlight to see better and that's when I saw the damage. The bottom grill on the center of the TV was snapped. It wasn't easily seen from looking at the tv from the top down but looking at it from the bottom up you could see the grill snapped at the bottom. I'm sure I would have noticed it earlier had the connections been at the rear of the TV instead of the right side. This was my first time shopping at Vanns which dealing with them so far has been fine-although I wasn't impressed with their transportation carrier. So, now I'm waiting to hear back from Vanns about the return process and hoping it's not going to be any more of a hassle than it has to be.

I love the tv by the way! It's beautiful! For those getting your TV's calibrated--does that mean you can't adjust your settings afterwards or it will screw up the calibration?
I don't think I could live with that--I'm always making adjustments as it seems with cable broadcasts you never know what you're going to get. One channel has dark fleshtones and the other is washed out--but that's how their broadcasting it.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. Blu-ray/DVD,PS3 and PS2 games look fantabulous.

Thanks for the reply. What is the fastest method for switching from one of your saved settings to the other?

I wonder if I can program my Harmony remote to do this for me when switching activities??

I agree, I don't see the color banding unless I am really looking for it.. But if you play Battlefield Bad company, you can see it when you die all the time as everything turns a shade of red and darker, and when you first bring back the XB screen (if you don't have wallpaper) you will notice color banding in the little smoke trail that moves up and down?(don't know what you would call it).. I have seen it on my monitor and on my TV, and after the original post I made sure to see if I could see it on my friends PS3.. Its there.. all the time.

Cool! Keep us posted. I'll be VERY curious to hear your impressions on picture quality improvements between the suggested settings, and your settings after calibration.

I either use the PIC mode button I've programmed in my Harmony remote. This cycles between Dynamic, Standard, Movie. Wish you could directly select these. Also, another thing I've found I do for adjusting Day/night is set the LED brightness control up or down. I may have it on Low for total dark watching, and bump it up to medium for more ambient light.

Battlefield Bad has tearing inheritantly. There is a comparision on that between the Xbox and PS3 on n4g.com.

I use a Harmony one, so I have to go into device mode, select TV, and then use the TV menu.

I tried (like an idiot) to just add the TV Menu button to my "Watch TV" activity. Which brought up the menu just fine, only I was of course unable to actually navigate it while in Activity mode.

I'll try a more intelligent approach later.

See my post to Mike--to follow immediately after this one.

Mike:

Could you explain briefly how you did this?

It would be useful not to have to go into device mode every time I want to tweak my picture settings.

Thanks!

Just unboxed and fired up my 750. WOW!! Here are some initial observations... This is a better picture than my 65HM167. Less SSE than the Toshiba too, geometry is perfect, no stickers on my model, SD TV looks better than the Toshiba too. I like the menu choices, much more robust than the Toshiba as well. Not to mention, this TV is like 30% more shallow than the 65HM167 so the set looks a LOT smaller (probably most due to it being 4" smaller).

Not talking about tearing.. Talking about color banding.. two completely different things..

Guys,

I have done a bit of searching, and can't really find a good answer. I am looking at a 61". It will be sitting on a 37" high console (wife already picked it out), and the viewing distance is about 12 feet. Its going in our newly finished basement, and will be used to watch lots of spongebob and dora 70% of the time, with movies/primetime hdtv the rest.

**Is this a good size for the viewing distance, or should I go to the 67"?
**Is the console too tall for a DLP, and should I go with a plasma instead?

I want to stick around the $3k mark, so getting a 58" plasma is out of the question. Thanks for the help.

I just got the 67" and my seating distance is about 13'. It's a good match and I think a 61" screen would likely be a little small for my tastes. I had a 65" CRT before this screen, though, so perhaps that's just what I'm accustomed to rather than anything else.

As for the height of the stand, ~3' seems pretty tall. I got this stand which is ~2' tall, and it's just about right for our recliner sectional.

I picked up the 67" for under $2K shipped, so it's definitely within your budget.

Hope this helps!

I have the 61" on order and started looking for the stand it will live on. The smaller the stand the better for my situation, I can deal with the overhang. Can I put it on something like this?

Z-line Designs Black TV Stand (VIPER40S)

It's rated for 150lbs and the set is 70lbs

Any recommendations welcome.
thanks,

Thanks!

I did this by setting up a sequence on my harmony 890 that hits tools, direction down, direction right, enter, enter.

I needed the 2nd enter because the first one is missed as it is changing modes. I also set the interkey delay for 600ms.

Works great!

The LEDs are turning on and off sequentially @ 120Hz during operation. The first turn on is no different than any one of these pulses.

This Omnimount G372 was the perfect height for me. The stand is 15 inches high and puts the screen at a good height for my couch. They also have a 60" wide version the G362
that is 60" wide instead of 70"

here is a picture of my setup www.aaronwt.net with the 67" LED set and the G372.

A general rule of thumb is for the stand to be the same height as the seat of your chair/sofa. This sounds too high, although you can tilt the monitor to compensate.

+1 for 37" being too tall. I have mine at 21" and it's perfect.

Thanks for the input, but the first turn on could be different than on/off of normal operation, because on startup, the LED does not have the same amount of electricity already running through it. During normal operation, it already has full power to draw on. I am pretty well convinced that it's not a major issue anyways. Like I said earlier, I only turn it on/off 3 to 4 times a day at most, so it probably won't be a big deal.
