2008 Samsung HL61A750 LED DLP owners thread and FAQ - Page 86

Hello all,

I've been reading quite a bit here and am pretty set on getting the 67 inch..just waiting to see a good deal or TV + stand deal.

I inquired about Avical coming to my area and it seems that they will be...for those that have had their sets professionally calibrated, was it worth the price (~$460)??

Also, I'm looking to have the TV delivered right about the same time they'll be in my area. Is this too soon to have it calibrated?

Thanks

IIRC you need 50 plus hours of burn in time before calibration. Check out their website, it mentions it on there for the time required.

I was told by one of the best in the business that:

Since the HL61A750 uses LED's instead of a lamp, there in no run-in time required. Some owners wait a while before having it calibrated just to ensure the set doesn't develop any problems.

These can be calibrated professionally right out of the box.

last night I found that my remote wouldn't work. TV wouldn't change inputs, or turn off via the remote. I was able to turn the set off via the button on the tv, and also to use the buttons on the tv itself to enter the menus, change volume, channels, etc. Just not the remote.
So today I turn the tv on - via the remote. Went to change inputs after it had been on a few minutes and nothing again. No buttons on the remote worked at all. TV buttons were fine still.

Decided to 'downgrade' the firmware just to see if that changed anything... nope. TV won't turn on or off or do anything at all via the remote. Tried unplugging the tv for a few minutes, no change. I've tried from a couple different remotes, a universal and the Sammy one so I know it isn't the remote itself.

anybody else experience this? Guess I'll have to call Samsung tomorrow and hope for the best. Bought it from Vann's so it isn't like there is any easy quick way to return it!

Hello everyone, this is my first post. I purchased the 61" about 5 weeks ago and I'm very happy with it. I only have two issues right now,
1st issue - as other people have noticed, every so often I get a split-second audio dropout. I'm using RCA cables attached from my SAT box. I'm wondering if anyone has any feedback from Samsung on this yet? What's the fix?

2nd issue - yesterday my remote control stopped working. I changed batteries and still no luck, I did notice the green LED on the TV would flash as I pressed the buttons on the remote, but the TV would ignore all input from the remote. I also tried to unplug the power to the TV for about 10 minutes without success. Once I turned the TV back on the remote continued to not function. Later I noticed if I was about 2 feet away from the TV it would start working again. When I went back to the couch which is about 13 feet away it would no longer work at all. Then after about another 30 minutes or so... the remote starts working again from the couch. I'm stumped, any ideas? Could it be the IR receiver on the TV? The buttons on the side of the TV all seemed to work okay.

Thank you to everyone, your posts helped me choose this TV. I didn't want to buy a bulb based DLP because of the ongoing replacement costs. Hopefully the LED unit will last as long as advertised.

1st Issue- Yes, others have reported this problem. I believe that someone here spoke with someone from Samsung and they mentioned a possible firmware update. That may or may not be correct. The problem is...most of us have a surround sound setup of some sort. I have an A/V receiver and my sound is routed through it. The audio dropout only occurs when the sound is routed directly through your TV.

2nd Issue- Are you using the remote that came with the TV or a universal remote? If you are using the original remote...maybe you could try a universal remote to experiment. You paid for that original remote and it should work. At the very least however, you could eliminate the possibility of a problem with the TV rather than just the remote.

I tend to agree with Darin, but can't test it yet as I don't have the set.. What is the difference between SPDIF optical and audio L/R. I know audio L/R is 2 channel PCM, but isn't optical ALWAYS s/pdif which can carry pcm or DD 5.1 without regard to sampling rates or audio standard. Also, how would a tuner distinguish between one type of input and another...i.e., allow 5.1 to pass on one, but not another source???

I agree with him as well. It would be interesting if someone could test this and confirm it in case the question comes up again.

So amazon lowered the price......Can someone point me in the direction of there 30 day price guarantee. I've looked all over there site and don't see anything about it.

MINE JUST ARRIVED!!! Now I have to wait for my wife to get home so we can take it upstairs. Wish me luck.

BTW, ordered mine from US-Appliance one week ago today, and they have a 30 day 110% price match guarantee. So far, so good.
Amazon a few weeks ago removed their 30 day price guarantee. What does still stand is if you preorder and the price drops before shipping they will adjust the price.

Perhaps emailing them will be beneficial but maybe not.

Hmmm, I ordered mine on Sept. 4th I wonder if it was still up back then. Anybody know the exact date they dropped it?

Thanks. I'm gonna try it in the box first. If I can't make the turn, then I'll have to take it out.

When I sold my 200+ lb Toshiba RPTV a couple weeks ago, the guy took it down my stairs with a 14 yr old girl! I told him he was crazy. Sure enough, he scratched the screen on the banister on the turn. I felt so bad for him. I've learned what not to do (in that respect - screen opposite side of banister).

Were you able to inspect the TV when it was delivered?

I inspected the box. She (lone delivery person) said I could inspect the TV if I wanted, but I don't think they'll take it back unless the box was damaged. Plus, I want to keep in the box for transport upstairs. If I open it and there is physical damage to the TV, I have to let them know within 48 hours at which point they will replace it at no cost to me.

I also have hourglass geometry issue that is very distracting w/SD... Probably going to call Samsung first of next week to have tech come check it out.

Just to update, I called Crutchfield and explained the geometry and audio drop out issues, and they are going to send me a replacement TV. I've also audio drop out via the PC audio input. CF asked if it occurred with OTA, but I told them I honestly couldn't tell. Sometimes it seems like it, but with broadcast quality being so diverse, I just don't know...

Even 9' back from the set, as I elevated or lowered my head I could see the brightness increase or fade relative to where my eyes were positioned. So watching a movie lying down on my couch versus sitting up definitely would be a different experience.

I think I'm going to have to fork out the extra $1000 or so to go with a Panasonic 58" plasma instead. The uneven performance from my couch and side chairs from the DLP just won't cut it. I can definitely see why people love this tv, it's just not ideal for me or my room setup - if I had just one couch and didn't have such a tall tv stand to start with, it may be a different story.

Do you really notice a difference when laying down or sitting up on a couch?

Did you by chance remember to look at the product number. I haven't been able to find this on ameriwood's site.

Ok, got mine set up but have some geometry questions. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, (and excuse me if this has been put in here before but I'm under a tight deadline to report issues to US Appliance if there are any). I put up the grid found here:
http://psleng.dyndns.org/files/tv_test/grid.jpg
I did notice that from the top right to the botom right, the pattern does not look exactly the same. Same is true from top right to top left. Is this the proper geometry test?

Also, I put on CNN and watched a ticker go across the bottom. It looked good to me - saw no issues with it.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't done this as I don't have the tv yet, but based on what I've read I believe you measure the line on the top for the distance from the bezel to where the line starts on the one side and then do the same on the other side for the horizontal line. This should tell you how far off the it is any thing under 1/4" is within specs IIRC (sounds like it might not be to bad as you don't see it with the ticker, but find another channel that has it running across the top also). You also need to check a SD source for a 4 to 3 frame to look at the vertical lines on the picture frame (frame meaning the projected image frame) to make sure they aren't pushed in or bowed out also IIRC. Hopefully I'm not stearing you in the wrong direction here.

You can also pull up the service menu to check your geo.

How do I access the service menu?
Be careful in the service menu, if you don't know what you are doing, you can screw up your set!
With the TV off, press Mute, 1, 8, 2, Power on the remote. Caution, this will cause all of your user picture menu items to reset to their defaults. So, you will have to redo your contrast, brightness, etc. settings whenever you go to the service menu. Write them down before hand!! To back out of a service menu item, hit the menu button

- What are all of these service menu items?
See the list here thanks to ztkp01.

Need to start working on a description of service menu items, if anyone would like to contribute...

- How can I bring up some test patterns from the service menu? (Might be useful in a store to check geometry)
From the service menu, you can get to the test patterns by going to the DDP3021 menu, and choosing Test Pattern (DDP). You can then right arrow through various test patterns. There is one for adjusting the picture position that may be useful for checking geometry.

I'll give Samsung a call and let them know I have a audio dropout issue. Maybe they will issue a fix quicker if we call and complain. I need to start looking for an affordable A/V receiver soon. I just don't know if I should stick with a 5.1 or 7.1 system. Any suggestions?

As far as the remote issue goes... I thought about using a universal remote too. I'll program one tonight and have it ready if my original remote acts up again.

Strictly my opinion, but the lower viewing angle seems fine. The pic does get darker when you go above the center of the screen, but it does not make it unwatchable, you just lose some of the contrast and "pop".

I ordered my 67A750 from Amazon on the 19th, the price was $2099. I got a confirmation E-mail on the 21st saying that it had shipped. On the 22nd I noticed that the price had dropped to $1999, so i called Amazon. The CSR said that since the price dropped within 7 days of my order, they would refund the $100.00 difference. He processed the refund while i was on the phone and i received a confirmation E-mail immediately.

I am interested as well... I was under the impression that the tv couldn't send 5.1 out from anything but OTA from what I have read...

I will admit it doesn't make a lot of sense that it would be looking for some OTA signature or something...

This is an absolute pisser. Ordered mine on the 19th, the CSR turned me down cold for the 100 refund.

Thanks. Ok, so my geometry seems to be within 1/8" so I guess that is okay.

Anyone know of a program with a ticker on the top?

The 4:3 mode shows a slight hourglass, but hardly noticeable.

I think I'm gonna avoid the service menu right now.

What is the best way to check for dead pixels? A completely white jpg image?

How do I check the firmware?

I loaded the settings recommended on the first post, but they did not seem as vibrant as the default settings? The detail seemed weak. Am I missing something?

Also, I have some slight smudges on my screen. What is the best way to clean it? The manual only mentions cleaning the cabinet.
