I was also worried about the DLP rainbow effect, since I tend to be more picky and notice problems like that more than most people do, but I have yet to see any rainbowing on this set (nor any other DLP I've spent a small amount of time with), so that's good.
I haven't watched a truly B&W movie on this set yet, but there aren't any tinting problems like you describe with your CRT (I'm coming from a CRT too, a Pio PRO-530HD). The Sammy will most likely blow away your current set, especially considering the pink tint.
Maybe I'll have a look at my DVD of Manhattan tonight. I have Seven Samurai sitting around waiting to be watched as well...not enough time.
There's rainbow with this set for sure. It's greatly reduced compared to older models, but it's definitely present. If you don't go looking for them you may never see them, but you can see them with white subtitles as an example if your eyes are darting between them and whatever you're trying to watch (assuming white on dark background, but this will of course happen in other cases as well). Very minimal though, and much less than older DLPs.
Sit close enough and that's exaggerated by the "misconvergence" of red / blue / green LEDs - that's seems to be the cause of "disco" text (wobulation being the other cause, I'm undecided how much that really affects it though). With 67", I can still see that at 9' away but it's very minimal, slight color fringe
I'm still impressed by the shadow detail - it was really something special. Use a test pattern that shows a gray scale gradient before adjusting brightness / contrast. I was able to easily see the difference between 3% and full black, and was able to "perceive" a shape on 1% with blacks at their deepest.
BTW Jimmy - are you using Cox in Phx for cable? What are the settings you're using with the cable box, and were you able to use any test patterns / grids / etc to configure it?
