I tried this! Thanks for the suggestion btw. On my just purchased HL61A750 (hurrayyy for meee!!!) I have a samsung upconverting DVD that was playing Surfs Up. CG movie. When I set the DVD player to 480P the movie looked REALLY good. Noticably better, nearly HD appearance. Then I tried Open Range. The picture wasn't nearly as sharp but looked really good. Like seeing it at the movies. Wider landscape shots looked sort of a smooth and had full look. Close ups and tighter shots looked very detailed but not as sharp as the CG movie.

Great tip thanks again! I'll be experimenting more with it...

UPDATE:

I watched irobot with the TV doing the up conversion until the last few scenes. Being used to the picture I switched the Sam DVD to do the up-convert and the result was the picture was noticably sharper. Giving the picture a look more resembling video. To me the TV conversion still looks softer like film at the theaters. Both have their own qualities so now it's a matter of taste.

Everything's connected directly to my sony strdg910

I just received an exchange from Samsung and received the HL67A750A (I previously had the 2007 67" Samsung DLP). The new set appears as bright as the old one. The old set had a slight vertical bowing. The geometry on this set is almost perfect. The brightness seems about the same as the old bilb based set which is quite good.. The one downside is since thier is more that one light source their is very slight convergence issue that is only noticable within two feet of the screen.

The user interface is better than last years set although the user manual could be improved to better explain the advanced picture controls. All in all I am very pleased with this set. I really believe a DLP set givs the best bang for the buck and with the use of the LED technology the set has no moving parts or lamps to replace. This set should be at least as reliable as a flat panel display. Samsung did an excellent job on the design og this set and I hope they continue to produce this technology.

I also have an Samsung HLN617 61" DLP - I am still on the original bulb, but I did have to replace the color wheel.

Oh, one more thing, how do you access the grid displays on the tv? I wasnt able to find them.

with the power off, press mute, 1, 8 , 2 on your remote. and enter at your own risk.
from there its the second option down on the top left DDP3021 . at the bottom of that sub menu, you will see DP Test Pattern 0.. click the left arrow button on the remote to go directly to the crosshatch.
just make sure when your in there to try and not be tempted to screw with much else , and CERTAINLY dont click CALIBRATE. which messes your colors up.
All of this info is on the board between this and the owners thread, so you may wanna search around there a bit as well, since im no official on this.
also beware that accessing the service menu WILL reset any settings you have made thus far. so if you like your settings write em down, and or refer to this threads 1st page for some other user settings.

Finally got my set yesterday with my 63" Init Stand. The stickers will come off once im happy with the set so please ignore they will come off. And Sorry for the poor wire management, its my only real complaint about the stand, plus i was very very impatient and just wanted to play with the tv. Plus my receiver is finally on its way back from H/K and i will get it tomorrow and hookup all my speakers. Heres a couple Pics for your enjoyment.

nice pics. my crosshatch and grid are off almost exactly the same as yours (ill try and take some pics of mine tonight) It seems to me that most everyone I have seen talk about having geometry issues, along with the sets I have seen in person, All have a COUNTERCLOCKWISE TILT. I am willing to bet that this is due to the manufacturing process and the setup of the Projectors Tilt, and Tightening/torquing of the screws that secure it. Rahull was nice enough to post 4 pages from the service manual which display how to enter the rear of the TV and adjust the Tilt via loosening, adjusting and re tightening the screws. I think I just might BUY the service manual and do this myself. My only concern is voiding my warranty, and or my MACK warranty. However I fix computers for a living, and disassemble Laptops, replace motherboards, Solder Capacitors and Ac adapter Jacks, build PC's ground up, a perform part-outs DAILY. So this should be a breeze one would think.

And all things aside, if not for the geometry/flimsy frame issue I would be VERY happy with this TV.

The only other issue that I have that is still on the table, is the Top Bar reflection or rather the white reflection we get on the black bars at the top of the screen. Anything bright at the top of the screen shows through the black top bar, just like a bright day through a thin black curtain.
Any consensus as to what that is yet? I know its mentioned on the first page of this thread, but MikePro has not updated with any findings thus far which lead me to believe there havnt been any.
I noticed it big time the other night as the credits rolled on a movie i was watching, and then upon rewinding it, i realized it was on ANYTHING bright at all. Its like the black bar at the top is somewhat Translucent, and the image is being projected on the entire screen, with only the translucent black top bar OVER it and allowing bright light to escape through it, as opposed to the black bars being embedded into the dvd with the video content ONLY in between the bars.

EDIT:
ya know I just had an after thought.
We all have talked about and read about the tilt geometry issue and loose and flimsy frames.. But I wonder if the Bowing issue is caused by Over tightening and/or to stiff of a frame causing the actual screen to ever so slightly push outward due to being to tight side to side.
I dont have bowing on my set personally, but I Have seen that if you barely touch the center of the screen , it does create a bow or smile effect. I noticed it when i did that on the floor model at best buy the other night.
anyway, just a thought, my point being that the two issues may be more closely tied together than we realize?????

Or just slip a coaster under the left side of your stand

If there is already a post on this, please let me know.

I am considering both units and at this point, just need some advice on which direction to head towards. Space and price is not an issue:

My main inputs are: PS3, Toshiba HDA30, XBOX 360 and Direct TV HD

1. I know the DLP unit will support 1080P at 24hz, will the LCD also support? This is because of the known Toshiba and PS3 issues with playback of movies

2. What is the estimate lifetime of the LCD vs. LED?

3. Will I notice the contrast differences when looking at HD sources?

Any recommendations?

The part number is SM-HL61A750A1F. You can order one from samsungparts.com for $28. Online retailers have electronic copies for SERVICE MANUAL 1 $28.00 $28.00

Other places have electronic versions available cheaper. Manualuniverse.com had it for $18.99. To find it you need to search for the complete model number, which is HL61A750A1FXZA

I am on manualuniverse right now and was about to pull the trigger on ordering the service manual via PDF, when I couple of things came to mind.

One, does anyone know how many pages it is or how large the PDF is? depending on how small or large it is, I wonder if I should just order the actual paper version from samsung.

secondly, if anyone else is interested, maybe a few of us can just share the 19 dollar cost at a few bucks a piece and just email or post the pdf?
anyone interested? reply or PM me i guess.

The service manual download for the 61" is a 10.5MB zip file. The PDF is 12.6MB and 100 pages. I'm not sure about the legalities of sharing the download, but I'd be interested in swapping someone for the 67" manual as I'll be exchanging the 61" for the 67" in a few days.

61" and 67" are the same per front page. Not really as valuable as you would think but worth $28 I guess just for default service menu values.

Not to play moderator, but the price questions in an "owners" threads are getting pretty old, besides that it is against forum policy to talk price or vendor.

I haven't noticed any issues. Is it completely obvious or are you super sensitive to it? I've played mostly GTA4 since I've gotten the TV, but I have played Halo3, Gears of War, and Call of Duty 4 a bit too. Have you tried the E.Mode (GAME)? (The E.Mode button is on the remote) If so, does it eliminate the lag you see? I'm also not sure what type of connection you are using to the TV. I happen to be component @ 1080p. (Never mind, saw it in the other thread.)
no lag issues here via 1080p component connections on xbox 360 games on movie mode. no gaming mode used here.

Take care. The listed "default values" do NOT entirely match the OTB settings in the service menu. A discussion of this issue with earlier model Samsungs (HL-S & HL-R, specifically) suggested that the display might not even work if you replaced all the settings in the service menu with the settings in the service manual. Things could have changed in the interim, but just doing a quick survey of my A650, comparing the OTB service menu settings of the display with the service manual "default" settings, suggests that it has not. (That's why I photograph the service menu before making any changes) FWIW.

EDIT: I purchased my service manual from Samsung. However, it shipped from a third party (photocopy?). Total cost with shipping/handling was about $39.

I bet it will work connected directly to the TV. Maybe your receiver can't pass 1080p coming from component over to HDMI? I wish I could be more help.

I don't doubt that they're quite similar, but I don't beleive they're the same.

samsungparts.com part # SM-HL61A750A1F vs. SM-HL67A750A1F
manualuniverse.com shows downloads for both models.

My 61" manual from manualuniverse refers to the 67" exactly one time when it says the following:
"Item: Assy Engine
Code No.: BP91-02113A (61 inch)
BP91-02113B (67 inch)"

I agree about not being particularly valuable, but me thinks nice to have none the less.

The video previews you download from the PS3's store are lowere quality video files. You WILL see banding in them.. I have played them on my laptop as well and saw the same banding issues.. I have NOT seen them in any BluRay presentations EXCEPT for ones that have a lower quality picture in the first place. On another note, I also have a Samsung upconverting DVD player. I saw banding on DVD's which I had never seen before. After looking through the settings on the DVD player, I found settings for TV-RGB (which is what it was set to), Monitor, and TV. When I changed the setting to monitor, the banding went away. After playing around with different things, I am almost convinced that the same issues would come up on any other TV..

You can turn off the blue LED under the screen...go to external settngs and look for Light Effects...you can select to have it on all the time, on only when watching TV, or just turn it off.

Can anyone tell me whether or not their set came with a warranty card of some kind? I didn't get one, and I'm wondering if I was supposed to. If not, how is Samsung supposed to know when your set was purchased for warranty issues?

Thanks in advance.

I got my HL67A750 a week ago...Can anyone tell me how to check the firmware version?
Mine did not come with a Warranty card...I went on the Samsung web site last night and registared it.
I do not recall seeing a registration card either. However, since I had always planned to register on line, I did not look for one. You can register online here: Samsung Online Registration. If you have not done so already, you'll have to set up an account. A service center rep also told me that you should have a copy of your sales receipt available if you require service, though no service person has ever asked to see mine.

A few pages back I posted this picture:

Which showed this "smudge" on the screen (Circled).

Just wanted to update and say that I had Samsung's authorized repair guys out today and they were able to fix it! Turns out it was just a chunk of dust or something on the projector lens. He just reached in and wiped off the lens (with a lint free cloth of course!). Had I not been afraid of poping off the dust access cover I could have fixed it myself as that is what I had suspected all along.

I must say I was impressed by how Samsung's warranty service works, I made the initial phone call to them and described the issue and they determined that a tech would need to be dispatched, so they gave me a ticket number and took my email address and told me to wait for the local service center to contact me, which they did within 2 hours! They thought it was the screen itself that was bad, so the repair service ordered a replacement front screen from Samsung and then called me when it was in to schedule service.

The 2 guys they sent out seemed to be knowledgeable and had been in the business for awhile (I bought this through "Big River").

So I thought I'd show everyone how to access the side panel:

First, get it into an accessable position...

Then Remove the lone screw holding the "Cover-Dust" as Samsung calls it...

Then with a blade screwdriver, carefully pry underneath the forward facing side and gently pop off the cover...

Like so!....

Behold the sacred inner chamber!...

Use a CLEAN lens cleaning cloth or equivelent and gently wipe the front of the light
engine projector glass. DO NOT PLACE YOUR FINGERS ON THIS OR YOU RISK GETTING
FINGERPRINTS ON IT! The service guy said that it's a nightmare to remove them
(that is what he told me--wether or not it's true is for you to decide).

So now I am all set. I am getting close to throwing the shipping box away! I just need to get a BD player and I will be all set (I'm thinking it's gonna be a PS3).

top/bottom keystone is off quite a bit. somewhere around 1/2 inch I would guess.
The sides arent very straight either, but I would guess they are withing "spec".

Call a service tech and they can fix your problem in less than 30min. free to you under warranty...may as well do it.

as long as you have your original reciept that is all you need.
the warranty card is just a scam to get your info and sell it to other companies. never sign those for any product.

Ok I haven't seen this one in the threads yet.. I just changed out my 5087 with the 61A750 and guess what? My digital channels have changed. This isn't a bad thing though.. on the 5087, our local channel 3 here in Phoenix was 108-1, on the 750 it's 0-703 (the program information is also there now), these are the local high def channels.. Can anyone tell me if the tuner in these two TV's are different? I also love the channel guide too. I don't want all the extra "digital" cable channels, so I don't have a box..

a bit? the whole picture is tilted with keystone. I would either return or get it repaired ASAP.
