In theory, yes. I think we can assume all we want regarding future firmware updates, but it does state that they intend to in the product brief.

Question about audio settings. My 1500 is hooked up to my Yamaha AV receiver via optical. The receiver only decodes Dolby Digital ES and DTS-EX. What audio option should I select in the 1500? Currently I'm using the Bitstream (re-encode) option which sends everything to the receiver as DTS. Should I choose one of the other 2 options? If so, which one? Thanks!

Based on you having a non-hdmi receiver, you've chosen the correct audio option to bitstream to the receiver.

I can't answer most of this, but I can tell you what my limited experience has been:

I have a 1500 and an Onkyo 875 receiver. I hooked up both the component video and HDMI interfaces between the player and the receiver. I now use the HDMI cable for viewing BD and the component cable for viewing SD DVD's on the basis of my experimentation. With this setup, it was easy to do an A/B comparison between the upscaling of the player and the upscaling of the receiver. The Reon chip on the Onkyo does a superior job, particularly in color accuracy and apparent sharpness.

Edit: I should point out that my display is 1080i, so results might vary on someone else's system.

It seems strange to want to play SD through component. DRM will not allow upscailing with component and the max res you can get is 480P. With HDMI you can use upscailing.

I am not able to get my Sony LCD TV remote to control my Samsung 1500. Any idea what other codes I could try? It is a Sony XBR 40" LCD.

Any playback issues ?

More on the dropout in Rambo.

I experienced the dropout in the exact same place as others. I'm using the bitstream (non-audiophile) via spdif.

So I pop'd the disc in my HTPC and played the movie back with ArcSoft TotalMedia Theater and the dropout is not there. Not sure what the problem is, but I suppose the BD-P1500 could be more sensitive to errors since there is only one dropout and it occurs in the same place for everyone.

Sorry, as I'm sure this has been covered, but just want to be positive before I purchase. The P1500 will bitstream TrueHD and DTS-HD MA; will it bit-stream and/or decode DTS-HD High Resolution audio? I am buying an Onkyo 606 so player decoding of TrueHD and DTS-HD MA is not an issue for me, but I don't think it will decode DTS-HD High Resolution (correct me if I am wrong).

Also, is there any reason to wait on the BDP-350? Seems to be pretty much identical, with the same price and upgradeable to Profile 2.0.

I just watched Rambo and I had 2 audio dropouts. 1 about 7:40 into the movie and the 2nd was on the boat with the mercs.

So are the drops outs because of the player or the discs themselves?

Does anyone have a UPC for the Samsung1500 purchased from Walmart?

DTS-HD MA "Master Audio" is a lossless, "higher quality" codec than DTS-HD High Resolution which is lossy. As suggested in the P1500 product brief linked to in my previous post, this unit "may" be able to decode DTS-HD at a later date with a firmware update, but it will bitstream both today. Note that the data brief does NOT specify which DTS-HD, "MA" or "HR". They are technically "mutually exclusive". The Onkyo can already decode DTS-HD "High Resolution" and "Master Audio".

Just to clarify for potential BD-P1500 shoppers; that's a function of BD-J vs. non BD-J movies. BD-J authored discs like Pirates or Cars will restart from the beginning if the player is stopped or turned off. Non BD-J discs (like The Fifth Element) will resume. HD DVD was similar in that HDi authored discs would have to restart if stopped/turned off. In the case of HD DVD, nearly every disc was HDi authored so pretty much every disc behaved this way. In the case of Blu-Ray, a lot of discs are non BD-J authored so its more hit or miss on resume play.

DTS-HD MA is lossless and the most difficult to decode. DTS-HD HR is actually quite easy to decode. Hence, no receiver bother to even mention of decoding DTS-HD HR if it can decode DTS-HD MA already because it is implied

I already own 2 BD players, BD30 and PS3 60 GIG. I did read most of this thread.

I'm not shopping for myself but based on what I've read, I feel I can safely recommend this player to any friends, family etc if they ask. Some are better than others but there aren't any without at least some faults.

Enjoy your purchase and if this is your first BD player, it appears you have started off well.

Good to know. However, HD DVDs have bookmark feature to help although not as convienent as auto-resume. Do BD discs all support such feature?

Does anyone know if the 1500 will reliably play BD-Rs?

Before I pull the trigger on this player, is ther any reason to wait on the BDP-S350?

I see that the 1500 is loading pretty fast and seems to be running well. Anyone had a good compare on BD30 vs 1500 bluray 1080p PQ?

Not all BDs, and not all HD DVDs, either, for that matter. Really varies on a studio-by-studio and title-by-title basis.

I am considering this player but have a question. My receiver is a Denon 3806 1.1 HDMI. It will not decode the new audio codecs. If a Disc is DTS-MA, but the 1500 and my 3806 doesn't decode this, do I get the core audio tracks or no sound at all.

Sorry if this is a newb question, just can't keep up with all this.

Very, very close, if not identical. If I were tied-up and tortured until I had to pick one as "better", I'd go with the 1500.

The PQ is very close between the two units. I prefer the Samsung 1500 due to speed, price, and 2.0 capable.

As a current BD30 owner, its not enough for me to justify a trade in.
