This is not a big deal to me, just want to let you know you already mentioned it earlier. Oh by the way I used to have bd30 also and loved it but opted for the cheaper br player that is maybe upgradeable for 2.0 (crossing my fingers) Could not wait for s350 (August the say for this BR) I am glad the Sammy is doing well with PQ and AQ.

How much faster is the 1500 over the Panny with BD-Java?

Frankly I'd be very surprised if anyone could pick one Blu-ray player from another (if they are left at their default settings) on a 50 inch display... I know I have looked at over a half dozen on a 110 inch display and couldn't tell one from another. Perhaps I need a new eye doctor.

I agree, honestly speaking, when I still have my bd30 and projecting it to
106" I could not tell either compare to my bd10a and sammy 1500. Even when I compared it to my hd dvd's (a30 and a2) it is hard to tell which one is superior in PQ. And note that my mits hd1000u is 720p native and supports 1080i when I did the comparison it was all in 1080i, and only the sammy 1500 where I see it reads 1080p 60 over when I pressed the display in PJ's remote. and none with hd a30, bd30 and bd10a did this to my projector eventhough I set them up in 1080p mode my PJ still read them as 1080i 60, Don't really know what is happening but the bottom line is I am happy with the sammy 1500 with the PQ I am not really worried about the AQ, coz I have the Onkyo 705 to do work for me.

Nice! I was looking for a shot of the splash screen...

I personally havent timed it, but the 1500 was clearly faster when I did side by side comparisons. I am honestly not sure if I tried it against java discs since I recently sold my BD-30 on eBay. In addition, the 1500 disc tray opens immediately (like it should for all players). Very nice feature ha!

The review fails to mention that the unit will bitstream both Dolby True HD & DTS MA through HDMI. I am wondering if with firmware updates this unit will be able to decode DTSMA internally. Since it has the broadcom chip I think it may be possible.

Huh?
Listed in the goods.

Player bitstreams all codecs.

Samsung claims it will in a firmware update, and so far they've followed through with their promises, so there is no reason to doubt them now.

What about the PS3? I'm not into gaming, but it seems to be a much more full-featured player for the money. What reason(s) is(are) there to go with the P1500, when I can get the PS3 for the same price (+/- $50), and have the ability to game in the future?
I was choosing specifically between the PS3 and the 1500. Here are the reasons I went with the 1500.

1) IR remote is included with the 1500 which I could integrate with my MX-500 universal remote. Would've had to buy a bluetooth PS3 remote or use one of the IR add-ons.
2) PS3 would look odd in my equipment rack
3) 1500 was cheaper (particularly when you factor in the remote cost)
4) We already have a Wii and didn't want to be tempted to dump even more money into games and controllers, etc.

Still, if the 1500 hadn't been available there's a good chance I would've gone for the PS3.
Quieter (no fan), bitstreams all audio codecs, re-encodes to DTS so you can use with your older receiver and works with universal remotes.

The only benefit (in regards to blu-ray) to the PS3 is it will decode DTS-HD internally and supports BD Live. The DTS-HD decoding is useful if your AVR has HDMI but doesn't decode DTS-HD and the BD live really isn't useful yet, as all the BD Live features available are lame -- so far.

Plus both these features are promised in a firmware update.

Sounds like you're a PS3 cantidate. I think most of us not considering the PS3 are doing so because we don't want to game and/or just want a standalone. The PS3 needs workaround to integrate into an aftermarket universal remote and it doesn't bitstream the new codecs(although it decodes all internally and passes them on umcompressed via hdmi). It may not be a good thing to put the PS3 in a warm enclosed or partially enclosed rack as the fans may become loud. If you wanted to game in the future, it'd be hard to pass on the PS3. I just don't game.

Watched part of Patton last night.

Audio and video dropouts galore during the opening monologue between minutes 5 and 6, and during the subsequent credits presentation. Probably the disk itself, but I would appreciate any input from someone else.

Also keep in mind the 1500 will fit dscreetly in your equipment rack without notice of other "family members." Not the case with the PS3

Was at the local Wally World in NH today to look into the 1500. Was priced at 348 last night, today it's at 388. None in stock for the $100GC either. May need to try BB tos ee if they will match.

I don't know if anyone has stock on this now. I've tried every place by me and no one currently has it in stock at the store. I'm curious if Walmart is holding stock until the sale. Seems odd that they would do that, but they have the display on the shelf, but no units to sell. It's been that way for a couple weeks around here.

388?

Damn that sucks!

Got mine for $348 last week at Wally World. Was considering returning it to take advantage of the gift card promo. It was the only one they had at the time and was locked up in the "security room".

I know a couple of folks on this thread have/had the Panasonic BD-30. Given the percentage of players reported on this thread, do you still feel this player(1500) has less audio dropout issues vs. the Panasonic?

The dropouts on the BD-30 are random for the most part and occur with True HD. The problems with the 1500 seemed to center around Rambo and NT2. I think there was 1 report of Patton, but my Rambo dropouts are 100% repeatable not that it makes me feel better...

I understand completely. While looking at new HDMI receivers, I was attracted to the ones that looked most like my current AVR so I might slip it in unnoticed.

Anybody has their player installed between two piece of equipment (e.i. on top of a DVD player and below a Set Top Box)? Does it work fine with not drop-outs?

Thanks.

I was looking at both the PS3 and 1500 the guy who has been in the electronics dept at this Walmart for 5 years now said they had all of the stand alones but were not on the shelves you had to ask for one they were only putting the demos on the shelf also the $100 gift card on the stand alone players start on June 8th only the PS3 at this time.He also said they had not gotten any word on how many 80gig PS3 they would be getting in.

^^^ Well I don't like either but that is the kind of environment my next Blu-ray player will have to deal with. If this player can't handle it then I'll scratch it off my list.

This player gets HOT. I bought an Antec laptop cooler for it and the thing is nice and cool now. If you're going to sandwich it between 2 other components (the set top box likely gets very hot on its own), I wouldn't get the 1500 without also investing in the laptop cooler. JMO.
