I was working with my swtich Apps team but when taking the Video Storm switch out of the mix the issue is still there. The BR disc Narnia, Prince Caspian has some intro trailers....after these are done there is a scene of flying thru snow capped mountains which ends at the BR Menu....this is 6/6 if looking in the chapter selection of the trailers. Anyway, about midway thru I get lines across the screen on my Sony VPLHS20 Projector....even de-syncs the projector some times to blue screen. My other newer LD TVs (Sony, Samung and Sharp) in the house done't see the issue. This is all when set at 1080i thru Component. Also, if I set to 720P the issue goes away on the PJ too. Clearly it is some transition issue in the scene that the BDP-1500 and Sony PJ combo don't "sync" well on. The Sony PJ is about 6 years old but was top of the line...so I know its input circuitry was very highend (DC and AC coupled).

After talking to the VideoStorm Apps guys they suspect the BDP1500 is doing something strange on the decode at 1080i. The scene is not a fast transition scene....in fact a very slow fly through....so it kinda puzzles them what the issue would be....again pointing more to the BDP1500 instead of the PJ which would be more symptomatic of fast transition screne. Attached is a very...very short clip (MPEG file but zipped) since the limit of attachments on this Forum is 500Kb. I just clipped the screen garble. If you have the disc you can see the scene that it is from.

Anyway, wanted to post this in case others have seen it....also wanting advice on who/where/how to send. I assume Samsung but I don't want to sit for hours on some 800 phone # to have a guy read off a computer screen. I'd rather just send the Samsung Apps the full clip with description of what I see.

Any thoughts ?

What firmware are you running on the 1500... I have used all three through my ownership. And have tested both 720 and 1080 formats. I had to disable the annoying Java loaded on screen menu and info layers (sped things up). Yes this thing has 3 different layers. One for video, BD live and on screen menu / info.

Also setup screen settings to allow pillar box format. Did not see any issues with scan lines or glitches.

I did see on a BD title something your Sony may pickup over the newer TV's... My new TV has a video blank delay built in for signal switching. When the movie trailer went from letter box to full frame the video blanked... Since there is no standard for content format any transition from one format to the next could bring a glitch or scan line artifact.

Which brings to mind it is possible what you are seeing is a Macro Block signal trigger... Most projectors have issues with Macro Block, though you may not have the issue earlier, the signal may skip in and out during the sequence. Which can be cured by using a Macro Block eliminator (T-View Gold for 4:3 formats for example).

Then again I do not watch much blue ray as I have a DVD library. Have tested a few BD rentals but cannot justify replacing a DVD until a particular title becomes available, which may not happen for a long long time.

Have had mine about 2 months and have put about 50 movies through the player. Had issues with 2 (For Your Eyes Only on BD, and Biggest Loser Workout Video on DVD). With the latest firmware (2.1) I am happy to report those movies now work as well. PQ is solid. AQ is solid. Quick response and load times and am very happy with my purchase. Got the player for $140 after I sold "The Matrix Trilogy" that came free with my purchase at Amazon. Awesome deal and I did not even have to wait out in the cold for a more generic 1.1 brand player.

BTW. Costco has this player right now with an HDMI cable for $179.

I bought my Sammy at Costco yesterday, and hooked it up this evening. Network hookup worked fine, and I brought it up to the latest firmware. It's hooked up to a 2 1/2 year old 50" Philips plasma (1080i, not 1080p) via hdmi. Title screen and menus looked fantastic and shiny--not unlike Windows Vista, but I didn't buy this player for super shiny menus!

I didn't have any blu-ray discs on hand, so I plopped in LOTR: FOTR disc 1. Gandalf had a BAD case of jaundice! Everything had a strong sickly yellow tint. Popped in Forest Gump---same issue. Played with all the potential menus and nothing changed. Checked the cabling--it was fine. Now my player did sit in the trunk of my car all day yesterday afternoon (it was about +10F), which is why I didn't set it up last night---I wanted it to have plenty of time to get to room temperature.

Just to be sure, I hooked my Oppo 970-HD back up to make sure it wasn't somehow my tv. I'm happy to report that Gandalf has made a complete recovery!

Sadly, my Samsung BD-P1500 goes back for a refund tomorrow.

Has anyone figured out an easy way to convert HD .avi, .MP4, .mkv to an AVCHD DVD disc format?

Huh? You can't justify buying a BD until that BD is available to buy? What am I not getting, here?
I apologize in advance for asking such a basic question, but the various sound codecs supported by version 2.1 are beyond my degenerating neurons. I connect the BD-1500 to a Sony STR-DA3300ES receiver via HDMI and use a Bose Accoustimass 16 6.1 sound system. Could someone either point to a good summary of the various audio codecs (for a non-sound engineer...) or suggest to me what I should set the player to? Are settings specific to each BluRay disk or are there global settings?

I should say that this is hooked up to a 52" Samsung series 7 LCD panel and BluRay discs typically sound and look fantastic. I just want to be sure I'm getting the most out of the system. TIA.

I find that the player plays DVDs just fine, it is that until there is a BD version of a DVD that had a bad transfer, I may buy it. Then again some titles that were released in DVD may never be transfered to BD or if so they will not be any better.

Most of the DVDs I play in my collection play back in 720p just as good as BlueRay at 1080p. As this player has pretty good DVD playback.

Just wish they would add Netflix.

That would be cool... but I have an XBox 360 in the theater as well, and that already plays NetFlix HD streams...

Why?

They are not going to look any better if anything look worse.

Double conversion is not as good as a master, and BD is slow to load.

You can try Super and select H.264 AVC or Mpeg II, as for output Blueray can be selected.

I like H.264 with MP4 output (works on portable devices and computers well), it is smaller and just as clean with proper H.294 profile settings.

So I did a little more trouble-shooting and have determined that my 1500 is fine, the HDMI input on my Samsung LN-R408D LCD is the culprit. It worked fine for my old Philips DVD player, but not with the 1500 or my DVR or Iomega Screenplay. Took the 1500 to my neighbors house and verified that the HDMI output worked on his TV.

Since this TV is fairly old, it only has the single HDMI, and 2 component inputs, so I am limited to component in and am using a manual switch box to connect the 1500, a Wii, and the Screenplay to one of the component sets.

Here's a question: does the 1500 only upconvert SD DVD's over HDMI? I suspect this is the case, as when I play back a DVD and check the info display on my TV, it appears to be in 480P mode. Will have to check the manual on that.

Guess I will be checking the after-Xmas sales for a replacement TV. I did see a decent looking Philips 42" at Costco today for $800, will have to go search the forums here for info about it.
You are correct the 1500 and most other units only upconvert over HDMI. There have been some great deals on Panasonic and Samsung Plasma sets recently with 50' models selling for less that the Philips 42" model. I would check out the section in the forum if you are interested. Early sets with HDMI had all kinds of issues.

While I would love to have a larger set, I am somewhat space-limited. A 42 inch is probably about the largest I can fit in my family room without completely renovating everything (and most likely severely annoying my wife in the process!). But I'll go check the plasma section, any particular threads? I've never really looked at plasmas, but have heard the quality and reliability has greatly improved in recent years.

I prefer the look of a plasma over an LCD, but there are trade-offs. I have found that Panasonic plasmas typically offer the best bang for the buck.
I agree the Panasonics plasmas "typically offer the best bang for the buck." The Samsung with the firmware updates should work well with these sets.

With the firmware updates the 1500 is now a very solid player that has few problems. The latest firmware has really improved things. The only suggest I would make is that you leave some space for air flow around this player since there is no fan in it. It can get warm. I am using a laptop fan to help with cooling and it works great. It is on sale all over this week for under $200. A great buy especially at Costco with HDMI cable included.

I own two BD-P1500s, both less than 2 months old. Last week I upgraded the firmware on one via USB without issue. Today I tried to do likewise to the second and turned it into a near brick. On/off and open/close both work, otherwise the display gets stuck on "Load" or "Close" depending. I tried resetting with the >| key as described elsewhere to no avail.

Oh well, I'll call Samsung on Monday. In the meantime, anyone got any other secret reset keys to try?

(I wonder if this particular unit had a latent problem. When initially syncing with my Samsung TV, it generated tremendously loud static in the left TV speaker.)

Just got the BD-p1500 with my new LN52A750. Hooked it up today and popped in the BR of Iron Man.

My Onkyo HT-R530 keeps going into standby about every 20 mins or so.

My connection is Optical out to Onkyo HT-R530 and HDMI direct to TV. This seems to only happen with BR disks. Uses a burned copy of Jorney to the Center of the Earth, the Onkyo HT-R530 never entered into standbye mode.

The only fix I have found it to power on the Onkyo HT-R530 after pausing the BR disk.

I read about 4 pages into the beginning of this thread and tried to search...not find much uses "bd-p1500 receiver standby".

Has anybody else seen this?

Thanks

I think you mean the >>| button ? I think alot of folks would want reference to this so in the Manual under TroubleShooting that pressing the >>| button for 5 seconds with no disc does a Reset to Default settings. I'm not sure if this is a HARD Reset or a SOFT Reset of Default values....very different things depending on the state of your box. So, I did a search on some of the Posts in this thread to see any other options.....here is what I found. If anyone posts any others I'll add....thus a quick search of RESET will bring up this POST #.

I found this on Post #2515
"I spoke with samsung, and they asked me to reset the player by removing the disc from the tray, powering off the machine, then powering on the machine and pressing the >> button on the panel." {This I think is same as TroubleShooting Example}

I found this on Post #2254
"So I called Support on this issue, They had me reset the unit by holding down the fast forward button for 10 seconds, then turn it off then unplug the unit, and hold down the power button for 20 seconds." {Interesting thing about this post is the power-up button hold}

Just got this player and did firmware upgrade. I have it hooked up to a 54 inch 1080p samsung lcd via hdmi. This is my first experience with blue ray. I rented Get smart BD and I can say I am not impressed. Looks like a dvd played on my xbox 360. I made sure the payer was set to 1080p, am I missing something?
Check your settings. Get Smart is not a great disk to test on. Try a few other disks and you will see what your are missing.

Settings are all optimized. What movie would be best to test it out?
hi all,

are there any settings that should be changed right out of the box?

any settings i should change if playing a dvd rather than a blu ray?

thanks!

I rented Get Smart this week and although I enjoyed the film it did not strike me as a very good transfer, so I agree with your recommendation.

The settings depend on how you plan to use the Player. The audio settings are very important depending on the receiver you have. If you have a new receiver follow the instructions in the manual to output to the more advanced bitstream. You must also turn secondary audio off.
