Anybody do a technical benchmark of SD upscaling? Also, will this upscale over component?

If that's an important feature for you, you might want to check further.

There has been a lot of complaining about the lack of ability to resume with the player, but as was said by JimP and many others, you can't currently resume on any player if the disc uses BD-J. I think we're only going to see more and more titles released using BD-J so this is something we're going to probably need to get used to for a while.

While my biggest hope for this lies in titles allowing us to use the bookmark feature, I have an old school workaround for the meantime. I'm just keeping a small pad of paper and a pen in my theater to write down the hour:minute where I left off if I need to shut things down. Once you get a movie up and going, you can pull up the info window and enter the time you want to go to in. Biggest downside here is depending on the title you might have to wade through a lot of previews and Blu-ray ads to get to the movie itself.

****Update****
The BD-P1500 is a success. No further responses needed.
****Update****

Over in the My Blu-Ray Movie Burning Experiences... thread, several members pooled talents to create a process that allows for an HD MPEG-2 file, to play off of cheap DVD-R(W) media on a PS3.

Issue is, we really don't know if it works on standalone players. Using their process, I have created an image file (like an .iso), which can be easily burned, without having to worry about following some obscure methodology.

If you can help, please go to this post, and follow the instructions.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1324

Including download time, it should only take 15 minutes.

Once (if) I get a response from a 1500 owner, I will update this post, and indicate that I don't need anymore volunteers.
Sorry to have "cross-posted", but I would really like to know if the process works on the more popular players, and the 1500 is certainly on that list.

Please PM me the responses

Playing SD DVD first will not play BD after without off/on cycle.

Ugh... the manual says it will not upscale over component... 480p only. Even worse, if you have HDMI connected and component connected it will limit output over component to 480i.

Please tell me the manual is wrong. Can anyone see if it will upscale SD DVDs over component?

Thanks,

No players will upscale over component, only HDMI.

Well....there are some firmware hacks floating around for some DVD players that will allow it...

OK, need some insight for those of you with experience with the 1500 and 1400. I currently have a 1500 and am within my return period. My AVR only decodes DD-ex and DTS-es but has analog 5.1 inputs. I'm currently connecting the 1500 to the AVR via optical and am using the bitstream(re-encode) option in the 1500.

Obviously I could just upgrade my AVR but would buying the 1400 and using the 5.1 inputs be a good stopgap until I want to splurge on a new AVR? Is the difference between the DTS that is currently going into my AVR and the 5.1 analog HD inputs noticeable (understanding that everyone's ears are different)? Are most of the 1400 problems dealt with? What disadvantages would I have moving from the 1500 to the 1400 - besides going from 1.1 to 1.0?

I know this is a lot of questions but I've spent the last hour looking through the 1400 thread and trying to extract that specific info from that many posts is extremely difficult. Thanks for any help!

For some this is actually a feature. I can hookup the BD-P1500 to my Onkyo TX-SR875 using both HDMI and component cables.

If I'm watching Blu Ray - Use the 1080p via HDMI.

If I'm watching SD DVD - Use the 480i via component and let the Onkyo's Reon do the scaling. If the player always did the upscale, then I would be switching the player's display setting each time I changed disc type in order to use my receiver's scaler.

I think this and the missing on-board decoding/no 7.1 analog out were part of the design goals. It keeps the price down by skipping the stuff you don't need onboard with a decent AVR.

I own both players. If profile 1.0 and very, very long load times are acceptable to you - along with a spotty reliability record - then the 1400 will do the trick. Oh and you'll have to get used to the incredibly lame "stop after 5 minutes of pause" feature, that forces you to restart any BD-J movie from the beginning if you pause for too long.

Honestly, I'd recommend holding onto the 1500 and upgrade to an Onkyo 605 or something when you can.
Thanks for the feedback, Phil. I've actually been looking at the 605 and it definitely seems to have the bang/buck going for it. I think I may hold onto the 1500 like you said and possibly upgrade my AVR in August. Other than some very brief audio dropouts I haven't had any problems with this BRD player.

Some players, like the Toshiba HD series upscaled unprotected DVDs over component.

Is this player in a class with the BD30? I have narrowed my decision to these, but read nothing but bad things about the 1200 and 1400, so I am kind of leery about the 1500.
OK, just purchased the 1500 (last one I could find in Seattle area Wally Deal $349 & $100 Wally GC) and I will be comparing to my BD30 to a Mits HC4900 and Pio 9G Elite (eval)..

I may give my parents the BD30 since I thought BD Live support was a Forum Rumor, but I see the box clearly states "BD Live Ready"

My daughter is upset that I didn't buy the PS3..

Do a search, others on this Forum have compared the two and think the 1500 is the way to go.....and at $249 + tax (bottom line), on the surface it appears a great deal. I do want HBR to my Onkyo 805 and I need these things to work with my IR Closed Cabinet System so the PS3 would require additional costs and it wasn't clear to me how noisy the PS3 is when watching BD (again in a closed cabinet, same room).

Some Comparisons HERE

1) IR remote is included with the 1500 which I could integrate with my MX-500 universal remote. Would've had to buy a bluetooth PS3 remote or use one of the IR add-ons.
2) PS3 would look odd in my equipment rack
3) 1500 was cheaper (particularly when you factor in the remote cost)
4) We already have a Wii and didn't want to be tempted to dump even more money into games and controllers, etc.

Still, if the 1500 hadn't been available there's a good chance I would've gone for the PS3.

Exactly my thinking vs the PS3 though my Daughter does want Rock Band...

Of course, Wally gives 90 days....

This player is possibly upgradable to 2.0 bd live, I used to have the bd30 and return it due to the reports of audio dropouts and sudden stop of playing Bluray disc in bd30. Was originally waiting for the s350 but this came out first and its been solid in my hometheater, bd30 and this sammy player in my opinion both has superb PQ projecting to my 106" screen honestly I don't see any difference at all. And this 1500 is cheaper plus a possible 2.0 firmware update. You can't go wrong with either of these BR players. Although past problems with sammy 1200, 1400 could play a vital role in your decision. Goodluck

Sorry but you only have 15 days for returns on electronics. I bought mine on 5/27 and just got back from getting the $100.00 gift card. They 1st tried to tell me they wouldn't match the promotion, in which I pointed out to them that the return policy posted on their wall states 15 days return on electronics, and that I was within the 15 day period. They then agreed to match the promotion.

My walmart is also at 388 today. I'm still on a search for a $200 BD player (to justify not going with a PS3 or HTPC drive), so the $100 GC just aint cuttin it. And I don't like the Magnavox.

Turn it on/off with a BD like RE:E (Under the Umbrella: PiP).

And to verify if it aint 2.0 already, try the Walk Hard BD which has a BD-Live feature.

just curious...

You can turn BonusView on & off with the Cursor button on the remote I can do this on the samsung 5000. on other players. I dont know.

My issue with Patton was just B4 the intermission. 3 to 4 minutes of macro blocking. NO sound issues through out and the rest of the movie was OK. Amazon is taking it back and sending a replacement.

I have them both. Just be sure you have a good HDMI cable. Also, I recommend you use Audyssey set-up for 4 to 6 positions to maximize sound quality. Lossless audio is simply incredible.

Good luck,

IMO, You also might want to audition the Yamaha 1800. It sounds great and runs much cooler with NO lip sync issues.

Hi there I live in Seattle area also and could not find one. Got mine 3 weeks ago but looking for the location in WM to BB do the pricematch, But after looking for a while I pick the WAR for 15 bucks and got also their new ads and brought it to BB and to my surprise they gave me the giftcard without any question.

Got my 1500 hooked up this morning and have been playing with it for most of the day. Watched POTCBP and wasn't terribly impressed with picture quality. didn't jump off the screen like at BB. Will experiment more tomorrow.

Just got done watching Ratatouille with the clan. MUCH MUCH MUCH better!!! Picture was great. Jumped off the screen in a couple of scenes. Did have a couple of drop outs though. Need to check that out. Tomorrow night is No Country for Old Men. Heard it's supposed to be good for sound AND picture.

Overall pretty happy with the 1500. Just need to do some more testing. For the price (with GC) I really don't think you can go wrong.

LOL. For only $800 more. It oughta change my oil and do my laundry too.

Well, I am officially purple. Just got back from WM with my 1500. It was the last one in the area, had to call 3 different stores to get one. I only picked up one movie (Cars), but I can't hook it up until tomorrow, so I have to wait to see how it plays.

Why you don't like magnavox? This is the same as Philips BDP7200 (minus 5.1 anolog and a handful of decoding).
I agree that buying a smasung (if only $50 more) is no-brainer? But mag is not bad either as it is available.
