Onkyo TX-SR805 vs. Pioneer VSX-1018TXH-K

My 15-year-old HK AVR 30 died three days ago. It has been that long since I have bought an AV receiver!

Alright . . . I am down to decision time . . . buy the Onkyo TX-SR805 today vs. preorder the Pioneer VSX-1018TXH-K today? The Onkyo wiil be a few hundred more in cost, but I can get it today. I am willing to wait on the Pioneer if it gives me all of the same versatility and quality. After all of the reading on this forum, I am unsure which would be better!

They look about the same to me, but my knowledge is dated . . . so . . .

Looking for you all's insight!

Thanks for the help in advance and in helping me make the decision!

The short answer is there is really no comparison in quality from a hifi build standpoint. The Onkyo is easily ahead from an audiophile point of view. That said the Onkyo may have some issue or the Pioneer some feature that makes the deciding factor.

I just wanted to point out these are not comparable items from a build/implementation perspective.

I agree. I think the Onkyo is a clear winner, but has a few issues that should be noted. A more fair comparison would probably be with an elite model.

"hifi build standpoint" (WTF is that...?) "easily ahead" "from an audiophile viewpoint" (Onkyo and audiophiles, ouch) "clear winner" etc etc...

FYI: the Pioneer 1018THX-K isn't even out yet, we don't even have specs. WTF are these opinions coming from?

You guys are very seriously funny, more than downright hilarious - how the hell can you say or claim anything, let alone inferiority, about any soon-to-be-released product???

Priceless topic, seriously.

So what about this document regarding the Pioneer 1018THX-K?

IMHO the Onkyo TX-SR805 runs way too hot.

It's an early brochure, YMMV - but 1018 is still not on Pioneer's website so its specs are not official yet.

To me, the answer is unequivocally yes. Each person may have different requirements.

Here are features which the Onkyo has and the Pioneer doesn't, the first three are deal breakers for me:

- S-video inputs/outputs
- Minimum of five S/PDIF digital inputs on the back panel
- Certified to run four ohm speakers in all channels
- THX processing and certification

Also, the Onkyo weighs 21 pounds more than the Pioneer. I have a separate amplifier rated at 150 watts per channel that doesn't even weigh that much. The Pioneer has a switch for speaker impedance, but it's between six ohms or eight ohms. WTF??

Take a look at the recent link below and the 805 thread if you haven't already. The 805 has superior receiver in comparison, better amps, power supply, dacs and THX certified and it's built like a tank. It was a $1000 MSRP receiver when it was released. The larger amps and power supply comes at the expense of heat, it does get hot although some of the claims of how hot are greatly overblown. If you're putting it in a enclosed space without a external fan it might not be the receiver for you, otherwise there should be no heat issue. To answer your question specifically imo for my needs the 805 is worth 2x the price of the 1018 much less $100 difference.

...

My information (from the Home Theater Hi-Fi review of the 805) shows it as $1099 MSRP. That's quite a huge step up from the Pioneer 1018 at $599. Honestly, the only reason these two units are remotely comparable is the price, and that's simply because the Onkyo can be had for such a huge discount below it's MSRP (an MSRP which I believe is fully warranted). If there wasn't such a heavy discount on the Onkyo, this wouldn't even be a discussion...

For a fair comparison the 805 should be juxtaposed with at leas the 9 series of elites.
