Sony receiver volume drops?

I have a sony receiver (str995 maybe?) connected to 7.1 speakers. Most are B&W ceiling speakers (surrounds), the L and R are wall speakers. And there is a klipsch subwoofer.

Sometimes i hear the volume all of a sudden drop off by about 30-50% and then it comes back up to the normal volume when watching TV/movies.

Any ideas on what is causing this?

it is caused by underpowered amplification section off the Sony receiver. Most likely you are trying to drive it past its capability.

Sony receivers are notoriously overstating their rating. They do not deliver anywhere near the 100 w/ch claimed. They only deliver ~35 w/ch in 7 channel mode.

You need to start looking at replacing the Sony toy, with a more capable receiver, like Yaamaha, HK, Dennon, Onkyo ...

I'd try to at least try to verify it's not a source issue. Does it do it on all sources including the radio tuner?

Well i only use it for Cable tv (optical) so it could be the source. But i have surmised for awhile that it is probably simply underpowered. I have noticed it many times while watching TV (or recorded TV).

How big is your room? All three dimensions please?

I'm hard on amp sections because I like it loud and dynamic. For most people an AVR like the Sony would probably be OK, but if it's a big room? Probably not.

Are the B&W's 4 ohms? That woudl also be a little to much for the Sony in all honesty. 8 ohm speakers would be much gentler so to speak.

They are 8ohm - (4ohm minimum).

Stop being in denial. Check the reviews for proof positive.

However, you seem to be part of the Sony crowd for whom "Ignorance is bliss"

So be happy with your HTIB amplifier repackaged to look like a receiver

I dont understand these last two posts....am i missing something? i actually like Sony and own a huge amount of Sony gear going back to the very first walkman.

They actually state 8ohm - 4 ohms min. on the speaker specs?


These may be difficult for your Sony. I'd set the cross to the sub higher if at all possible.

Most people on here like Sony's products, like their tv's and blu-ray players for instance. Just not their audio because some people say they're underpowered.
