Which to Buy: Infocus IN78 or Sharp DT-510/XV-3100?

I am looking for a 720p DLP unit and am about to get an InFocus IN78, but then am wondering about the Sharp DT510/XV-Z3100 which were my 2nd choices.

My assessment is that the Infocus is slightly more quiet and the Sharp has is less bright but may have better blacks.

Anyone have experience or recommendations? I have narrowed it down to these, so its one or the other. Already eliminated the Optoma HD65 and some others.

You need to look at throw and offset. The mounting position is roughly 2' difference between the Sharp's and IF for a 106" diagonal screen (Sharp's being a shorter throw PJ). The sharp's lower lumen and higher contrast is based upon the Iris being placed in the higher contrast postion which improves blacks and CR and diminishes lumens (WHich if you put the Iris in another position (More lumens), your CR could drop to 4400:1 for example). A DT-500 or XV-3000 will provide you with 3 Iris settings (vs. 2 on the 510) and 200 more lumens to play with. Food for thought.

All those PJ's are excellent, you just need to look at placement and offset. MHO

Sharp DT-500 & DT-510: 1 iris (but 2 settings: iris on & iris off) Max 4000ish on/off

Sharp XV-Z3000/Z3100 & Marantz VP4001: 2 iris (and 3 settings) Max 6000ish on/off

Well it was a last check but no responses before I left for the store - I went with the Infocus IN78. Just paid for it and picked it up!

The DT-510 was tempting I wasnt 100% sure on it. The Infocus seemed to have the better native contrast ratio (3500:1) whereas the Sharp was 2500:1 native, before the Iris bump to their claim of 4000:1.

Also I would have been inporting the Sharp from the US to get the best price on it ($899) - but I would have had no warranty coverage over here. As it was, I spent the equivalent of $1500 on the IN78 locally, but it came with a 2 yr/2000 hour lamp guarantee from the store - and the way local regulations here are here, you effectively get a 5yr warranty on electronics as of right, regardless of what the manufactuer advertises.

So this should do me for a couple of years. Hopefully Sharp will have something interesting and new - and maybe more quiet - by the time I get around to going for 1080P.

You will be very happy with the Infocus.
