Dish 1000 and OTA via diplexer questions

Thread Starter
I've found a few threads on this, but none answered (at least in terms that were clear to me) my questions. I've got Dish Network and I'm adding an HD OTA antenna. I'd like to not have to run any additional cabling, or at least as little as possible so I bought a couple of diplexers from Lowes -- they are labeled "5mhz - 2.3ghz". When I got up on the roof to do a test run, everything got a whole lot less straight forward than I expected. And unfortunately I'm not 100% certain I'm getting any reception at all, not 100% certain I don't need to do any additional setup on the receiver, not 100% certain my diplexers are sufficient, and not 100% certain my wiring is correct, so troubleshooting at this point is a crapshoot.

In the threads, I read there is a multiswitch installed by the techs *somewhere*. I've followed the cables as best I can and have found no sign of it. Is it necessarily there somewhere? I'll continue as if it's not.

I had the output from the Dish 1000 labeled "1" fed to my diplexer, along with the antenna, and another diplexer at the receiver splitting the same way. I positioned the antenna temporarily without mounting it, ran in the house and scanned for local digital channels and found none. I tried the same with the first diplexer connected to each of the other outputs with the same results.

I then disconnected the coax from the output labeled "2" on the dish and connected that directly to the antenna. (I'm assuming at this point that 1 and 2 are for the first and second receivers, and I only have 1.) Inside the house, I connected the coax from the antenna and dish to the diplexer. Came up stairs and dish broadcasts were coming in correctly, scanned for local channels and again found nothing.

I have my own guesses as to what this all means, but I'd like to get input from someone that knows better first. Any tips?

Go into "Menu" press 6, 1, 1, then "Check Switch" and report what type of switch your system reports. I'm not sure what you mean about "tried the same with the first diplexer connected to each of the other outputs with the same results." and the next paragraph. Also what kind of receiver do you have? A 211, 622, or 722?

I suspect you have some type of switch between the dish and the TV, and the diplexer at the antenna side should be installed between the switch and the TV. That may require you to run the coax for the antenna to wherever the switch is located. Note that some switches are located in the LNB itself and in that case, your setup should work. What brand diplexer are you using? A diplexer is not a standard splitter, but rather a "band pass" filter.

The switch says "DPP K1.2 w/Seperator" -- guess I'll need to track it down. Actually, though, if I'm going to need a new run of coax from the roof, I might as well go all the way to the tv with it. Coax is cheaper than diplexers (at least at Lowes.) Thanks for your help

qoncept,

Your switch is built into the LNB, and since it says with Separator the receiver is a dual tuner unit (222, 622 or 722). The Diplexers should be installed 'In between' the separator (which looks a lot like a splitter) and should be very close to the receiver and the LNB.
Another thing to verify is the settings in HDTV setup "Menu" 6, 8, is set to "Off Air" for analog type. Even though the tuners are not capable of receiving anything other than ATSC the software was not changed from when the older receivers could receive NTSC.
A final thought is when you said you temporarily positioned the antenna, was it aimed towards the transmitters? Depending on how far you are from the broadcast towers and what kind of antenna you are using, being off on the alignment could cause the problem of not picking up any stations.
Keep at it and you should get there.
