The "Hayes Family Theater" build

Well, I am finally ready to start my theater room. It has been a long time coming. Like most of the theater build threads this is going to be kind of a slow one. Also like most, this is going to be a budget friendly build. I just finished remodeling half of my house including the kitchen so I am out of money. I will be purchasing materials little by little every two weeks. You know why? That's paydays! I am not a newbie to remodels and working with tools but I also don't know everything. I'm sure I will have a lot of questions along the way and from my reading this is the best place to ask.

Now a little about the room I will be using. I am converting my 1 car garage. The measurements are 19'6 x 16'3. We do not use the garage for anything other than storing junk. During my recent remodel I built a 16' x 12' storage building in the backyard to store the junk. You will tell from the photos below that the junk still has not made it there yet. There are some obstacles that I am going to have to work around to finish the room. One being the washer and dryer are in the garage and will have to stay. I am going to build a closet around them and try to do the necessary things to cut down on the noise but it is what it is. The way I look at it is a home theater with a washer and dryer in there is better than no home theater at all. The second obstacle is how I am going to do the sheetrock over the existing foundation. You will see in the photo below I have a foundation (brick), then the joist, then the studs. I really didn't want to sheetrock over the studs and leave the brick exposed. I could frame new walls completely but that would be a big hit to the budget. Another option is to frame up above the joist but then you have a ledge all the way around the room. Just not sure what I'm going to do yet. If anyone has any idea's let me know.

Most of the budget is going to be going to the cost of converting the garage so I will not have a lot left over for equipment. As far as the projector goes I am leaning towards the HC1500. Speakers I will use my existing Klipsch. I will be purchasing a new HSU sub. I do not have a PS3 at the time but planning on purchasing on in the future so I will run the necessary cable. Attached below are the photos of the garage and I will keep you informed. Tomorrow I will post the plan I have drawn out. Would do it now but it is on my office computer. So let the journey begin and I'm sure there will be lot's of questions along the way.

Do you plan to take out and cover the garage door? which wall do you plan to put the screen on?

I think you could incorporate your component rack in with the washer and dryer room some how. once you get every thing moved out of there I think you will get a better sense of how things will work. A drawing of your intended space would help everyone give you some good ideas

The garage door will be enclosed. There will be some windows there so the screen will go on the opposite side.

I was not at the office today so was unable to get my AutoCad drawing of the space but drew something up by hand just to give an idea of what the space will look like. I'm not a drafting guy so please excuse the drawing.

I look forward to reading how your progression goes. I too am thinking about converting my 1.5 car garage as I can't even get the car into it! It has carriage doors which are old and when open still don't leave enough space to get a car through. Basically, my room is about the same size as yours.

But my theater is at least a year away. the wife is amiable to the idea - so that's good news. But I think she'd like me to finish up the MAME cabinet first. But I'll be keeping track of your build and wishing you luck along the way!

Thanks Santora! I will be removing all the junk this week so hopefully I can start demo on Saturday. I will post more photos once demo is complete.
