Rack / Cabinet Design - Where to Start?

Thread Starter
I've enjoyed browsing through the various threads of custom rack designs and will be putting something in along these lines but have no idea where to start looking at what's available, best practices, etc. My one requirement (per my wife) is that I lock whatever I put everything into as the neighbor kid (nicknamed Damien by us) tends to wreak havoc on my 'toys' even though he "never touches them". Also, if everything is enclosed or in another room how do you go about transmitting the IR signal for the remote control? I've heard about IR repeaters (or something along those lines) but don't know anything about them and how they work. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

seems like a lock on the outside of the house might be a bit more useful!

I just did a custom rack setup myself. Assuming that the back side is in a room unreachable by your neighbor's kid, you could buy a lockable plexi door from Middle Atlantic. I don't run the door, so i can't comment one way or the other on how well it passes IR.

I also know some people who have used IR repeaters with pretty good luck.

As a side note, I decided to simply buy rackrails instead of a whole cabinet and it worked out nicely for a fraction of the cost. Not sure if your application will allow that, but its worth considering.

Here's the URL from MA for the door: http://www.middleatlantic.com/eoptions/page1.htm#ufd"

This is my first post, so it won't let me link it.
