Help! Is my Toshiba 57H81 screwed?

I've never had a problem with my Toshiba 57H81 CRT RPTV since I got it in October 2001. I know it's outdated, but it's been a great TV for me and my family.

Today, for some unknown reason, it appears my red gun got screwed up. Every image has a red offset. When did the touchfocus where it scans red, blue, and green lines both veritcally and horizontally, they all appeared to be ok but the red vertical line which did not move left and right. I'm guessing the red gun is either stuck or the control just doesn't work anymore in that direction.

Any advice how to fix it? What could have caused this? Do I have to call a repair man? What should a fix like this cost? I really don't want to throw down a couple G's for a new TV at this point in time. Thanks!

Try unplugging it for a half hour then plug it back in.

Well, I had it unplugged for an hour and plugged it back in. Still the same.

Any other thoughts?

Well, I called a TV repair man. Cost me $350, but it's working perfectly again.

My wife was home when he came, but he replaced all three of the alignment guns or something. She said he was soldering and replacing chips for an hour or so. It's been perfect since (knock on wood) and he said it should still last for at least 5-7 years more. Cost me $350 for the fix.

For $1200 or less you could have picked up a 56" DLP set. You would have been able to see much more detail than that 2001 set is capabale of. I had the 57"HX version from 2001 to 2005 and even when I went with the first crop of 1080P DLP sets it was a big difference in the detail. Even though those early 1080P DLP sets only showed around 1800 lines of resolution compared to the 1400 or so the 2001 Toshiba sets show. The current DLP sets have no problem showing the full 1920 lines of resolution.
