After one easy as pie return on a not yet picked up 5020 at Best Buy, a few informative emails with Plasma Concepts, and one web transaction later, I've just saved myself a few hundred bucks! Thanks Plasma Concepts. :-) Glad to finally get a chance to do business with a forum sponsor too.

I am now a formal member of this forum... Tonight I purchased a 5020 on the way home from work. From what I was told the last one in stock from over 10 of the nearest stores. Monday morning I called and they had one, since I have a Best Buy account they said it could be held for me. After checking around today it seems that many places have them on back order and I am happy with the deal. Two weeks ago I purchased a Sony S550 Blu Ray player and tonight received a $75.00 credit since they also put that on sale and that brings the S550 only $30.00 more than the 350. All day checking on the web there were only a few places cheaper and using Best Buy free financing I think this was a better deal.. picked up myself so no shipping charge and I have it now.

Once I get my new 5020 set up, what is the best Blu Ray movie to buy to show my wife I am not crazy buying a new Plasma when my Sony Plasma is just fine according to her. She did give her blessing to the new purchase because we watch a lot of movies and I love to watch football and golf in HD...

i would recommend either wall-e or ratatouille, but f you dont want to go animated, get I,Robot, or the prestige, or harry potter the order of the pheonix, and of those will be great choices to show off your new display

I'll second the two Pixar recommendations. If rampant violence and blood isn't a problem I find both parts of Kill Bill to be absolutely stunning as well - and that's on my 720p front projector. I can't wait to see them on my Kuro!!

Because I wanted a new tv and I wanted the best my dollars could get me. Now that I answered your question can you help me or are you just being an a-hole?

Plasmachick, I'll try to give you a slightly better reply than the other guys
There's a TON of information on these forums, but your head will spin as you read it all.

Do you have HD cable? If you have cable or satellite, the first thing you'll want to do is make sure you have a cable or satellite box that can handle HD.

If you don't want to do any upgrading of your components, then you should get either Component or HDMI cables for your DVD player.

None of this is altogether straightforward and truth be told, it's a lot more like setting up a computer. I recently had to walk my friend via email setting up her LCD TV and getting her going with high def and making sure her DVD player was outputing at the maximum resolution.

If you're ready to upgrade your components, pick up a Blu-Ray player (Panasonic makes some great ones, or just pick up a PlayStation 3).

That way you can ditch your DVD player. I dunno about your VHS . It will work fine on your new plasma, but probably not look so hot.

Good luck!

HOLY SMOKES!!! At first I thought you were being a jerk but that actually helps. Just doing the research on plasma v. lcd and then narrowing down which plasma to buy was a lot of work. I'll be back with questions about the tv itself when it comes.

well today I went back to work and returned my TH50PZ800U and exchanged it for the 5020 and as a package offer from one of the managers I got the pdp-51fd for free. Not a bad deal... I am over all way happy with this set.

Well thank you Pedro! So I guess the first thing I need to do is get the HD cable box. I dont think the box I have is HD. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Appreciate it.

Also check with you cable or satellite company to see if they offer an HD package..
Dish now offers about 120 channels in HD and adding more all the time.. Be sure you hook up your providers box to the panel with an HDMI cable...
If you don't have a surround system then that would be my first add on..
Congrats on your new set..
GOOD LUCK..
Sonny

The BBC Planet Earth Series Blu Ray, Lost Season 3 Blu Ray (amazing) and The Dark Knight are my "show-off" discs.

Ok I just tried searching and couldn't find it... when I hit display on my 5020 with my 51fd connected it shows 36 bit at the top. Now when I searched it said change the mode to Pc and it will show 24hz... that is fine... but what I want to know what exactly does the 36 bit indication represent?

Hello,

I was watching Full Metal Jacket on BD yesterday and though it looked good the colors seemed dull in Movie mode. Im playing from my PS3 with Ycb setting on, super whites on. When i switched it to RGB Limited the colors seemed more deep and richer, but RGB limited on movies introduces black crush. So im at a stuck point with the minor adjustments that can be made. For instance when i had it on Movie the sky seemed yellow, but when i switched to standard the sky was fairly blue.

Well i guess what im asking is, how come everyone prefers movie mode?? Is it bad to watch movie in any other mode besides movie?Tho it still produces a good picture it just seemed like the other modes besides dynamic, sport and game all produced a deeper richer brighter picture and when going back to movie you notice how dull it is(im not complaining about it just wondering if the movie mode can be adjusted a little better or are D-nice settings the best ones.)

For movie mode i am using D-Nice break in settings, but im almost done with break in!! Are there any other settings for movie mode after the break in has finished?

And can someone post settings for other modes such as standard, and performance. Id like to see what one of my movies looks like on standard but with proper settings.

BTW, i flipped on Conan Obrien last nite becasue its one of the HD channels i pick up, let me tell you my eyes were freaking out because of the depth of the picture. For example when Conan first opens his show he stands in front of the audience and there is like a checkered background behind him. and hooooooooolyyyyy schnikes did it look 3d its like conan was in my living room. I was watching it in Standard and it looked great. I forget what station that was i think NBC, but it is the most flawless HD channel i pick up, and its not even a direct feed!!! i do not have a HD box but after watching Conan i want one now. Unfortunately i fell asleep with the TV one last nite i think it was set to optimum mode so i hope nothing happened, i cant really tell rite now cuz its bright in my room but ill have to check tonite it does not seem like anything happened but im running the break in drive just for back up.

Those are recommended settings before and after professional calibration, but there are no ambient light conditions noted for those settings. Adjust the set to what you would like to see using the contrast, brightness, and color controls. You will not damage the set by doing so, and that's what they are there for. Movie mode comes closest to the D65 setting out of the box, but as has been posted here before, and answered to you many times, it's all personal preference. I watch cable TV in Standard mode, while others seem to like Game mode. I jack up the settings to fit my family room environment, even in Movie mode when watching videos.

Ummm, the very second post in this thread has settings for use with the TV after break-in, and the third post has settings you can use if you want to use ControlCal to go in and adjust the gamma settings.

I mean, really, you have the break-in settings so I know you had to have read the first post, does it hurt to read a bit more?

First of all I am a fairly new member to this forum... yes I have read a lot over the last several weeks almost all of the section. I have had HD Sony Plasmas TVs for a long time. Current 2 sets have worked perfectly now for four years with no problems at all.

Since deciding to upgrade my DVD player over the holidays to Blu Ray.. I now have purchased the Pioneer 5020 to take advantage off all the new technology. I have never heard of a break-in period until I read about it here. IS IT REALLY NECESSARY ?

PLEASE... not trying to start WORLD WAR 111... from some of the threads understand there are some who are very passionate about the process. My understanding the Plasma technology has taken away the old problem of burn in ???
