2008 Samsung HLxxA650 DLP Owners Thread/FAQ - Page 3

Samsung is really starting to piss me off! After sending out a tech yesterday to inspect the tilting and bowing issues with my HL50A650....they called me this morning and said they're sending out a 2nd tech to see if he can correct the issues.

So this 2nd tech repair man made his way out this evening. He went into he service menu and pulled up a few test patterns which showed bowing in the top and bottom of the display screen. He tried to bend the cabinet and loosen the screws....but to no avail. He took a few pictures and said that he will pass it along to Samsung (per their request) and that he will call me tomorrow with their decision. He said that they will either replace the engine or offer me another replacement.

Considering that I've had this TV for less than 48 hours.....I'm not thrilled with the idea of having it serviced already. I'm hoping that Samsung will offer a replacement because I don't feel comfortable with a "serviced" BRAND NEW TV just a few hours after taking it out of the box.

Also, I'm not overly thrilled with the picture quality on STANDARD broadcasts. The picture looks very "grainy" and the color is somewhat "pinkish." I've tried to adjust this from the picture menu....but I can't seem to get the pink out of the grey and whites.

I'm using component cable (HDMI cable on it's way). Will this improve when using HDMI?

Hello, I also have a A650 and was wondering if someone could go into there service menu and give me the settings for the ADC RESULTS screen. When I first got the tv I was in the service menu and ended up changing these settings. I would like to get them back to defaults.

Thanks

I was wondering if there was an internal mute function on the A650. I use a Harmony One remote for all of my product switching and when I go to "Watch A Movie" mode I have to turn the TV down manually so that the AMP can produce the 5.1. Muting the TV is not an option because it leaves the pesky speaker with a line through it on the screen. Does anyone know of a way to do this.

Yeah if you go into the menu and scroll down to the "speaker" icon. You'll see an option in there for the internal mute.

I hope your situation gets resolved soon. Samsung is a bit notorious for sending out a couple of techs before they decide to replace anything. I'm sure they'll do the right thing and replace it.

In regards to the picture, I could see it clearing up once you got the HDMI cable. I don't have anything to base this on because I didn't hook mine up using component cables. It will also depend on your cable provider. I noticed a huge difference from when I had Cablevision then Verizon FIOS. I wouldn't mess with your settings too much yet especially when viewing a SD channel. Stick with the HD stuff and see if it gets better when the HDMI cables arrive.

Just had my 56A650 delivered yesterday. Question about the DDP3021 menu. I noticed a tilt to the grid while in the H/V adjustment section. Any way this can be corrected?

Thanks.

It's a manual adjustment that requires removing the back of the set and adjusting the position of the light engine. Do a search of the A750 owners thread. IIRC, someone posted a copy of the section of the service manual that showed how to do the adjustment.

Yikes...that doesn't sound like fun. Thanks for the reply.

Edit: Big River is going to take it back no questions. Now what to get? HN52A750? Thats a lot of $.

Need help, could I please get someone to go into there service menu and give me the settings for the ADC RESULTS screen. I am trying to get my settings fine tuned but there is no use in trying until I get the ADC setiings back to defaults.

Thanks

I posted this in the A650/A750 "combo" thread and I figure it might be best to post it here too......

I received my HL50A650 set a few days ago and I noticed some bowing on the top and bottom of the screen. I called Samsung and they sent out a tech a couple of days ago. After pulling up test patterns from the service menu and fiddling with the cabinet....he said this this type of "bowing" is within factory standards and is normal for these type of DLP HDTVs.

Below are pictures I took after loading some test patterns from my USB drive. Can you DLP expert folks please examine the graphs and let me know if everything checks out good and if the bowing and geometry is "normal" and if I should consider asking Samsung for a replacement Or just stick with what I have because the next model might be even worse.

See attached for three not very good, but for the most part readable, pics of the ADC menus that I took when I first got my current A650. I have never done anything with these menus. Have you figured out their significance?

Edit: That 1st pic is virtually unreadable on my crt monitor. The values are failure, success, success and failure.

Hey thanks for that donb1948! KTM250, let us know if that does the trick!

All, first I would like to thank you for the help, at least now I know the settings are back to default. Let me give you alittle background of what I did. I had gone into the service menu and when I got to the screen (donb first Pic) I saw that the HDMI input said that it had failed. So I trying to let it calibrate itself. Well when I got done the settings in (Pic 3) had changed. This made the picture very dark. I ended up using the componet input settings to get the picture some what back to normal. This is why I need the settings that donb gave. Donb to answer your question yes they do make a difference and I'm not sure what the significance is. Not sure if a pro calibration would calibrate the HDMI input.
One more question had anyone used the calibration services of either Circuit City or Best Buy?
Again thanks for the help

What is the difference between Movie mode and the entertainment film mode?

Well it seems when you hit the remote's entertainment mode button and select film or game, etc. you're locked in to factory defaults for that mode whether they're good or bad for your viewing area, you can't change them.

But when you select Movie Mode in the Picture menu the normal way you can of course customize your settings and they are saved. I really haven't done much with that E button except to see roughly how the picture changes as you hit it. Supposedly hitting game mode speeds up game action but I don't know that that's a problem anyway.

Edit:
KTM, I haven't had mine calibrated but have talked to two techs at Best Buy. Both were helpful and seemed pretty knowledgeable. At least they had the right answers to questions. I had a good feeling about them but that doesn't mean anything at another BB. Hopefully someone else has first hand experience. Glad you got your SM back to defaults!

I have an HL 56A650 on order and I got it for a great price plus they have a 5 year in home extended warranty for under 200 - and if you don't use it you get a gift card for 100 after the five years, but the rep recommended that I use it to get a replacement bulb even if I haven't yet needed it. He explained that it is worth a fair amount more than 100. (I'm also getting an Onkyo TX SR606 reveiver and the Harman/Kardon HKTS-18 speakers and I'll using an OPPO 980H DVD upconvert player - I can't wait to get it all up and running!)

Anyway, for under 200 AND getting a free bulb it is definitly worth it if only for the piece of mind. I don't usually get extended warranties (I actually have a 2006 flood car that is PERFECT and was 14K under new) but in the case of this technology I wouldn't go without it. JMHO

BTW, I read all of this forum and the HLTxx89s forum before deciding on this model.

In the HLS series movie mode automatically turned on the 3:2 pulldown. I am guessing film mode does that instead?

It looks like I'll be taking delivery of a new HL56A650 unit this coming weekend. All the information in this thread and others I have read have provided me with such insight, I commend all the post authors.

I plan on using my new (and first) HDTV quite a bit, especially watching sports. Are there any particular custom (non-factory) settings that would enhance my sports viewing ([american] football & basketball primarily)?

I'm really looking forward to upscaling (using a new Samsung HT-A100T) my existing DVD collection as well. Anything I should be particularly aware of? I know the HT-A100T is only 2.1, but hey, I rent my condo .

Thanks in advance.

Welcome, hcreese3! I hope you're happy with your new 56". For sports I'm happy with the A650 settings I listed in the first post. I got a fantastic display for the NBA finals, NASCAR and golf, and lately the Olympic trials. Don't see why not they'd work for football as well.

My set is in a basement media room so if your room is brighter you may have to bump up a few things. It may seem overwhelming at first but you'll soon be glad to have so much control over the display.

Upconversion of your SD DVDs should look good too. Just play with it for a while then tweak your picture settings for that source input. I've let the Sammy do the upconversion using component 480i input and let my DVD player do the work sending 720p, 1080i and 1080p up the HDMI and really they're not that different. The final product tends to look 75% as good as HD DVD or Blu-ray.

Anybody got an answer to jhferry's question above?

Just curious, but what settings would need to be adjusted in a brighter room?

I have read a couple of discussions about this among the pro calibrators who frequent the forum. The basic trick is to increase the "brightness" of the picture so that it is not washed out by the light in the room. One school of thought says to just boost the contrast setting (and maybe a corresponding adjust to the brightness (or, black level) control) a bit so the picture does not appear washed out. The other school says that once the picture is adjusted for your optimum viewing condition then the only compensation you should make for a brighter viewing condition is to bump up the gamma setting. I have not done a comparison and have no idea which works best. FWIW.

I adjusted the Dynamic Contrast from "Off" to "LOW" and it gave the picture some pop and less of a "washed out" display in my living room. Made a pretty big difference IMO.

I tried that too but had to back off many picture settings to tone the picture down. Finally went back to Off but in a bright room Low may help. I do think it's a way to add more range to Contrast though. Most of the settings in the FAQ have Contrast pegged at 100 or close to that and Dynamic to Off. I think I had to drop to 63 when I had Dynamic Contrast on Low, giving more upward range in a sunny room.

@L4D, No doubt in a bright room you'd want to play with Brightness and Color settings right away. (From what's in the FAQ...)

I'm helping a friend set up his new 61A650. We noticed a small speck of dust or lint on the inside screen. It is V shaped and noticeable on a white or gray screen. I've read on this forum that people have popped off the back and wiped off the screen. Couple questions.

1) How easy is it to get to the back of the screen?
2) Would this void the warranty?

We are probably going to have the Samsung Service people come out to do this, but I'm typically the type who would rather try myself if it's easy.

Thanks,

It's pretty easy and safe but use the cleaning cloth that came with the set. Odds are the foreign material is on the inside of the screen but could be on the lamp or mirror. If you press lightly on the screen with the cloth and the object stays put it's on the screen itself. If it moves quite a bit then you're seeing a projection shadow from something on the mirror or lamp.

The two circular access holes should get you to the right spot. It won't void the warranty as long as you don't act like the Samsonite gorillas! Let us know how it goes!
Quentin, thanks for the advice. The little v shaped lint is about the size of a "v" with a font size of 10 so my friend's are going to ignore it until they need service. I posted the following message on the 750 thread since the power issue was being discussed here.

I apologize in advance for the cross posting but I wondered if anyone here has experienced this.

I'm helping a friend set up his 61inch 650. I know this is the wrong thread but since this issue is being discussed here I thought I'd try.

We've got the 61 inch 650 connected by HDMI to a Samsung HTIB (512 model). Using the Anynet feature, I was hoping to eliminate some steps to coordinating the two systems. The Anynet is set up so that the receiver shuts off whenever the TV goes off. This is what happens.

1) Turn on TV, turn on HTIB. Both come on, the TV takes its time to start up. You hear sound for a second before the picture comes on, then right before the picture comes on, the HTIB shuts off! The TV is fed by a Comcast DVR.

2) If we turn the HTIB on first, then the TV. The same thing happens.

3) If we turn the TV on and let it fully cycle on, then turn the HTIB on, everything is fine.

Any ideas? I don't like the idea of having to wait 30 seconds before turning on the HTIB. It seems like the TV sends an off signal to the HTIB while it is turning on.
Thanks,

No problem Art. Makes perfect sense to post there too since Anynet would work the same with the A750 and that thread reachs a larger audience than this thread does.

I can't help since I don't have another Anynet device. Maybe someone else here?

Man that yellow text is wild on the blue background. I had to highlight it to read it...

Hey,

I just purchased an HL50A650 DLP.. Does anyone have any recommended audio settings? I plan on using the Built in speakers for normal TV, though, they sound a bit hollow or obscured on every setting.
Thread Starter
Well the built-ins just aren't that great. I've played with the settings too, trying to get the clearest dialog but never have been happy with it. Really this is a problem with most TV speakers, they just don't put much toward sound since so many people have home theater systems. And that was my solution too, I'm much happier with real sound and use the TV speakers only for the news or casual listening. When I was playing with the TV sound I turn off all enhancements and ran through the audio modes, it seems music worked best for me.

BTW, welcome!
