Netflix has partnered with Microsoft, says Wedbush Morgan

Wedbush Morgan Securities has speculated about a possible Netflix deal to stream movies through Xbox 360 consoles.

The conclusion, made by the investment banking firm, came off the back of comments made by Netflix management. If true it would allow the online rental service to stream movies directly into consumer's consoles.

"As we have speculated in the past, we believe that one of Netflix's partners is Microsoft. We arrive at this conclusion based upon Netflix management repeatedly mentioning 'Internet enabled video game consoles'," said a Wedbush Morgan statement.

"While there are three such consoles, only one - Microsoft's Xbox 360 - has a sufficiently large installed base to make sense from a streaming partnership with Netflix."

"The competitive advantage of such an alliance is clear: Netflix customers who are Xbox Live members will have the ability to stream online content through their Xbox 360s directly to their televisions. The ability to do so is available without the Xbox 360, but requires a measure of technological sophistication and a high tolerance for failure," it added.

Earlier this year, Netflix had surveyed subscribers on the possibility of streaming movies via the Xbox 360 console.

Maybe somthing offical at E3 on this from MS.

I held off on buying the roku box just in case something happened within the next 6 months. I hope this actually gets done.

I've been holding off on the Roku box too in case this comes through (Or upgrading to Vista).

Can you point me to this XP workaround? I've never heard of it and can't seem to find anything.

As much as I like the idea, I still have some reservations about it. I was hopping that along with the untimely demise of HD DVD that Blu Ray would come out of the gates swinging and try to grab some market share. It hasn't happened and I am a little bit worried about the future of HDM. I certainly wouldn't mind having some 720p HD movies, but I would prefer to have them on a disc with 1080p and lossless sound.

Actually ... I don't think a workaround is required any more. I just streamed bladerunner from netflix to my xp HTPC.

yeah we thought you were talking about a way to rig xp to send the internet stream to the 360. "Watch it now" has worked on XP from the start.

As mentioned, Netflix->XP isn't difficult. The trick is streaming Netflix "Watch Instantly" movies to an Xbox 360... when you don't have a Vista PC on your home network.

The vmcNetflix plugin for Vista Media Center is the only one of the Netflix plugins for Windows Media Center (Vista or XP) that has support for streaming down to the Xbox 360 extender. (more)

Extremely sorry guys. As I drifted off to sleep in a nyquil induced stupor last night, I realized what you were talking about.

There actually was a point where they (netflix) were not supporting cards (or at least certain cards/resolutions) without HDMI. After hours and hours of google searching I pieced together a work around. For some reason I assumed this had something to do with Vista/DRM or something.

My apologies again. I added nothing to this thread.

This is what I've been waiting for. I cancelled my Blockbuster online account a month ago. Entirely too expensive they had increased the price from $17.99 a year ago.. to $34.99 for the same service.

I'm been eager to sign up for netflix since. And this announcement only makes it more exciting. I personally cant wait to have new releases streamed to my living room.

Less clutter.. more movies.. better price.

don't get too excited just yet. There indeed is a lot of content on netflix watch it mnow but the majority is more indie/old/pretty craoppy releases. But there is indeed a wide variety and a lot of TV shows. and the more people who sign up the more money netflix has to spend on getting better content.

I picked up the Roku/Netflix box last week and simply love the thing. Sure it's YAD (Yet Another Device) to add to the collection, but it's cheap, tiny, and does not require another PC. I can't tell the difference in PQ compared to a DVD (HDMI to 47" LCD). Plus the remote and user interface are dead simple. I'll definitely get excited when I can do the same thing via my 360, but for now this little box is hard to beat.

For me the 360 is a bit too noisy (even when just streaming) for anything more than the occasional HD download (There Will Be Blood being the latest). Using it frequently to watch movies would become tiresome, I think.

With the ability to watch with your friends, just like what HOME promised to do years ago.

Sony dragging their feet with HOME has given MS an opportunity and they look like they are taking advantage of it. Smooth, Sony.

Nice....no mention of HD though, but that's to be expected until Netflix upgrades their stuff.

Plus, the 360 is the only console that will be offering Netflix...nice bonus for MS.
