Yea, I started to buy from sonystyle, but that extra $200 in taxes sent me away. I got a deal at ABT and with a Sony home theater system with wireless speakers I came out about the same as what I would have spent at sonystyle for just the LCD. I just don't have it yet,

How does ABT return/exchange and shipping/setting up policy compare with Sonystyle?

Talking about non-msrp price is a good way to get threads locked.

It is good to see a thread on this tv. I had my mind made up on the mitsu LT-46244 and then Sony had to go and release this I wanted a Sony to begin with, but I am one of those with space constraints. This tv will fit the bill very nicely. I really want to see on of these in action. I'll be frequenting my local stores quite often until they get one to play with.

This is my first time shopping with them. They have been top-notch so far.

I just wanted to report that I did get my tv in earlier today and I am off to get a few things at the store before doing some more tweaking. I will be posting pictures/settings used/ and my thoughts later tonight. So far I can say I am VERY impressed at what I am seeing...

The biggest question I have after a nightmare of Samsung 650 sets, is how is the backlight uniformity?

congrats soap. can't wait to see pics of that black bezel Z.

I'm bummed. Crutchfield is giving me a ship date of the 16th, plus a couple days travel time. So take that into consideration if you're ordering from them -- mine was ordered three weeks ago or so and they're still back-ordered. Yes, I could cancel and go with Sony Style, but there's also no guarantee that they'll stay in stock there (and Crutchfield gives mondo credit-card points). Been patient this long waiting for the set since CES, I can wait a bit longer. Those great pix are killing me, though!

I got the guys at Sony Style to set up the 40" z4100 next to the xbr. In my opinion the xbr had much richer colors, I'm pretty disappointed that I need to wait for the new xbr or buy the 4 or 5. I had my hopes set on the Z.

Did you try and calibrate both sets to similar settings?

We didn't go too in depth on either, but both off vivid, to standard, and the motionflow was turned off. The sony style folks apparently aren't supposed to set this one up till Monday, they brought it on a wheeled cart and pulled it underneath the xbr. The brightness on the Z was spectacular, it just didn't have the level of richness I was looking for. The Sony folks said something about not using as large a percentage of the color wheel, apparently xbr4/5 used 95% whereas the Z uses like 75%. Obviously, I have no docs to back this up.

I am happy to report that everything is looking good so far with my new 46inch Z. I will say that there is very minimal flash lighting/clouds when transitioning from a solid black screen in a completely dark room to the feature you are watching. I want to stress that this is very minor and I have no problems with this. I can also confirm the CCFL auto dimming which does not bother me either. Again I only noticed this when the screen was completely black.

(These are some sample pics that come installed on the TV, they look really good in person)

(The noise in the black area on these pics is from the camera and not on the screen when viewing) These below are from i-robot

That is beautiful. Sony has definitely done well with this set. I'm definitely getting the black version. Thanks for post the great pics Soap.

If I were you I would wait for impressions of owners who have ONE SET connected to their cable, rather than the 30 sets or so connected to one cable (DirectTV) at the Sony Style store I went to today at South Coast Plaza, Orange County, Ca.. Initially, even HD (CNNHD) studio shots, looked worse than SD. After the salesperson adjusted the picture at my request, it looked much better. I will wait until other local dealers, who do a much better job connecting and calibrating their sets have the Z4100 on display, before I let my eyes pass judgement regarding PQ.

Just got back from soap's place and the z is a very nice display, I own an xbr4 and while mine is a 52 and his is a 46 i can comfortably say the black levels and shadow details have been taken up a notch in this years model.

There are a couple of things missing in this model that i would like to see in the xbr6 and those are

1. no hdmi black level selection (maybe sony got the auto detect correct this time so this feature might not be needed)
2. no detail enahncer or edge enhancer (for once i really like these detail enhancers in the xbr4)
3. no +1 (0% overscan) on 720p sources (this is one I will really miss if it doesn't show up in future models and could keep me from buying an xbr8)

Other than that there is definatly less subtle color smearing that plauged some xbr4 owners (never really bothered me except on the fudoh test). Motion enhancer has seen some improvements also although it still isn't perfect. I say this based on certain content on tv from tbs/tnt/fox/abc this could be the many conversions that most of these channels perform but i still think it's up to sony to "compatiblize" thier motion enhancer to show this content properly.

Overall I think this Z series notches itself slightly over the xbr4 although a side by side comparison wasn't possible.

FYI - those pics he posted really don't do the display justice, the sample pictures inside the set of the deer and the sunflower were just unbelievable in person i serioulsy found myself getting up to look at it from diffrent angles as the picture really was that 3D.

holy crap, are the blacks in this pic representative of what you actually saw? and was it taken in a completely dark room? i cant even make out the bezel, it seemed to have disappeared. if the blacks are this good, then sony may well have a winner.

Thanks for the info. Does the stand come attached?

Edit - apparently the stand is not attached, since the specs indicate it is 12.125" deep and the box is 9" wide.

ok I brightened up the pic a bit in photoshop and now I can make out the bezel, but wow, the blacks still look impressive and this was in the dark! sony has truly delivered with the Z.

just for comparison here's a pic of my 650 at its best in the dark with cinema settings.

Yeah, that flaky camera might make it too tough for me to tell exactly what you see, but I'll take your word for it.

Unfortunately it sounds like something they're definitely omitting from all of the lower end models indefinitely. It'll be interesting to see if it shows up in the XBR models.

By the way thanks for the comparison to the XBR4. I trust your first impressions based on your experience with other sets. You had a Sammy 81 as well before swapping it out for the XBR4, right?

isnt the full pixel mode that added this year?Full pixel applies to 720p as well for zero overscan

The KDL-40Z4100 support pages are up, for those of you who like to peruse them:

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod...mdl=KDL40Z4100
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/mod...dl=KDL40Z4100B
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=KDL40Z4100S

The quick setup guide, user manual, and stand attach INCLUDE the KDL-46Z4100. For some reason the KDL-46Z4100 suppport pages are not up yet, but I'm sure it won't be long. The only thing missing for the KDL-46Z4100 is the dimensions diagram.
