Z Owners (i.e. Soap\\TodboT),

A couple of questions if you've had the chance:
  1. Have either of you hooked up a Xbox 360 or PS3? How does gaming look? Any suspceptible blurring?
  2. How does the 24p look with movings? I'm curious how well the 120hz 5:5 pulldown (de-judder) is working.

yea i seen the picture already post! but i wanted to see more picture with more color! like in movie picture!

the picture on here now was more show casing the black! now i want to see the color, see if that 10bit panel and extra features are worth returning my w4100!

I finally got around to playing some Rock Band. I played Wave of Mutilation on expert for my tests. I experimented with the preset calibrations for a CRT/LCD TV and game mode on/off. I first thought that CRT calibration with game mode off had bad timings. However, after a couple of tries, it didn't seem so bad. Maybe it was just me getting used to it. Setting the calibration to LCD TV made the biggest difference. It seemed easier to hit high frequency notes. Turning on game mode helped a little bit, but didn't make a huge difference. The game is definitely playable using the LCD calibration with game mode on or off.

After reading this I did notice a couple of "sparkles" while Rock Band was loading. I just did a little bit of testing. The easiest way for me to reproduce this was to use the PS3 and scroll horizontally through the XMB one icon at a time. I have not yet tried different cables or resolutions. I'll try to do this when I have some free time.

I have another question for the Z owners.

According to Sony's dimensions cutsheet, with the pedestal attached to the 40" model, there appears to be 5" of space between the bottom of the pedestal and the bottom of the actual picture...is that right? Or is more like 2"? I'm looking to find out how much space is between the bottom of the pedestal the bottom of the screen.

Does anyone know if there is a manufacturer of adjustable height pedestals?

I do not have this issue on my display with motionflow on or off. What kind of cables do you have?

I can't compare against the 650 as I didn't look at them much. That whole Red TOC was a deal breaker for me. As for size that is only a question you can answer. If the Z would have come in a 52 and fit in my cabinet I would have purchased that instead. Are you saying there is a fan in the 40inch Z series? I wasn't aware of fan's in either unit, although I never really considered the smaller 40inch.

do you agree with CNET's review of the W4100 becasue if that got a bad review i wouldnt expect the Z to get any better tho i hear the v4100 is a really good buy for its features and price especially over the 550 sammy

Soap im not saying theres a fan i know on the 40 XBR4 there is so i wouldnt doubt a fan to be in this one unless its to slim for it...i want the Z have been waiting for god awful months but now people are talkin about this sparkle thing!!! i dunno wut to do i think im just about to get the 40a650/ or 750

Unfortunately.

I'd be all over a 52Z. Now I'm stuck between sacrificing some features/performance by going with the 52W or waiting till fall and paying top dollar for the 52XBR6.

It's probably an assumption based on last year's XBR series. There was an (audible, for many) fan in the 40inch XBR4. In the 46" version the fan on my set was completely inaudible from even 5 inches away from the back of the set (or even 1 inch in front of the set). In the 52" there was said to be no fan at all, but rather a heat sink.

Typically, the sparklies artifact is caused by marginal hdmi connectivity.

Yeah, as much as I love the 650, had the Z come in a 52" I may have waited on it. The W doesn't interest me in the least, just not good enough. I wish I understood Sony's thinking on this. I think the XBR6 is going to be over-priced for what you get in typical Sony fashion, though a nice set.

exactly, the xbr6 is will have the exact same specs as teh Z, but it is a $500 premium over the Z just for a few cosmetic changes and some useless photo viewer. they don't make a 52" Z because they think they can tempt people into paying for the 52"xbr6

Or because having too many variations of the same size t.v. is simply too expensive from a production and inventory standpoint. By this rationale, sony should have no 46" Z either. Or any Z for that matter.

I'm thinking that they decided that there are fewer buyers of 52" sets, so they can have fewer different offerings at that size and still meet minimum production for it to be viable. sony opted to have the 52" in the XBR6 configuration because that way they have one at that size in their "premium" line up.

The Z has PhotoHD also...check the specs on sonystyle.

Buy it, don't buy it.... If you don't, you'll wonder "what if", and if you do a few things could happen. 1.) Defect free tv. 2.) Sparkles, if not a hassle exchange/return and go with something else. 3.) You yourself will find something you don't like and that will become the "issue" du jour.
