Games for 5 year old AND adults ??

Hey guys, we have Wii, and our 5 year old son loves playing games like Lego Star Wars and Lego Indiana Jones (we own both of those). We just bought a PS3, so I'd like to find some games that he will enjoy... but I'd like to get something that an adult would like too.

Any suggestions?

Oh, it can't be rated T or M, but E or E 10+ is okay. But anything too violent and my wife will say no.

Also, since these games are kinda expensive to buy, what's the best place to rent games to try them out first?

Thanks!

check out gamefly for rentals. it's like netflicks, but well, just for games
http://www.gamefly.com/

as for finding games that are appropriate, that will be a bit more difficult. head over to place like ign.com or gamespot and try to see if they filter out game reviews by the ratings.

I would suggest picking up GTA IV.... I'm kidding of course. The psn has a slew of games that might fit the bill. PJ Monsters, Calling all cars...etc (these games are much cheaper as well...).

Motorstorm?

Ratchet and Clank TOD?

I started a thread about a month ago, before I received my PS3. Do a thread search on 'family friendly' to find it. I also have a 5yr old (and a 3) and received some great input. Before spending the $$$ on a game, I have been downloading many of the free demos from the PS Store. My 5 yr old loves the Sega Tennis game (even though it times out after 3 or so games). She was able to learn the controls rather quickly and now beats grandpa. I probably won't buy this game though, unless I find it for cheap, as the demo seems to be enough right now. I also downloaded the Rub-A-Dub game demo which is pretty basic but still entertaining (uses the sixaxis) for kids and adults alike. For $10 I will probably get the full version of this one.
I also purchased Ratchet and Clank which is a great game to play. While it is a shoot-em-up game, there is no blood as you're mainly destroying robots. The humor and amazing graphics are almost like watching a movie. The kids are content just sitting there watching me play it.
Others that were recommended that I have not yet played are Toy Home or the Lego games that you have on Wii.

Oh, and did I mention Guitar Hero?! My 5 yr old loves it and won't stop singing Slow Ride.

If you have backwards compatability, you could get Okami. You could also pick that up for Wii, I suppose. Fantasy-styled violence (nothing worse than a Disney movie), I don't know if a 5-yr-old would really get the hang of the "painting" mechanic, but if he does ok in the Lego games I don't see why he wouldn't. You would enjoy it also.

I definitely recommend Ratchet & Clank. Really fun game with some genuinely funny moments. My little cousins (5 and 6 years old respectively) love it and play it whenever they are over.

Also, if your son likes racing games, Burnout Paradise is a ton of fun also. Very simple mechanics and easy to catch on to as well. Try out the demo in the PSN store and see if he likes it.

There just aren't that many games for kids on the PS3.

However, High Velocity Bowling is a decent one.
Is your PS3 backwards compatible? Because the good old PS2 had tons of quality kid-friendly games like ratchet & Clank and Sly cooper.

R&C:Tool of Destruction and Calling All Cars. Me and my 4 yr old have been playing Calling all Cars lately and he loves it.

Had to get him away from Gta4 he loved hijacking school buses to much lol.

Burnout Paradise is good, if you don't mind your 5-year old crashing cars in a realistic fashion.

The EyeToy is also a hit. And there are several "games" for it you can download off of PSN for $2 or $3.

toy home...

Ratchet and Clank ToD, Super Stardust HD, Everyday Shooter, High Velocity bowling, Calling All Cars, Toy Home, SnakeballIGN review, Burnout Paradise

Classic PS2/1 games and demos!

Hot Shots Golf IMO. It even has an easy mode for the little critters. Plenty of depth for more experienced gamers too.

Wow guys, thanks much for the great suggestions!

My PS3 is not backwards compatible so I'm out of luck with the classic games... but I'll check out some of the PS3 suggestions.

Kung Fu Panda

7.5 -Not the greatest, but much better than most other movie-based videogames.

A fine title for any budding gamer.

It's the kind of gameplay all designers shoot for when they make games for kids, but rarely hit the sweet spot the way they do with Kung Fu Panda.

Kung Fu Panda features a small set of multiplayer mini-games to keep the whole gang occupiedas long as the gang is limited to four people.

Kung Fu Panda is a brief romp, but one that will keep young gamers interested from start to finish. Heck, maybe they'll even play through it a second or third time. Just remember, the title won't do much for anybody that would consider themselves a regular gamer. If you happen to have a young child, niece or nephew that liked the movie, give this a rent or a purchase. They'll thank you later.

Sounds perfect for little kids and you can also get the family to join in as well.
Also, the movie was supposed to be good, so it could be a good combo.

looks pretty decent, maybe a little violent for my 4 year old daughter but shes run through the 12 or so games shes got set up for her on the orig XBOX so this looks like a solid rental at least. Agree to see movie first, as ive found at least, the little buggers really go after a game more if they have something to reference it to.

really i know you are looking for the PS3 but stick a Gamecube,Ps2, or XBOX in his room and you will find 30 games just perfect for your son!! But if you dont want to go that route the only PS3 title i can think of that my daughter enjoyed was Surf's Up, go figure, ah to be 4. And if you dont mind him on the PC you cant go wrong with Viva Pinata, although you might not get your PC back..ever. As a side note if one night you cant get your son to sleep just put in Assassin's Creed he will be sleeping in 2 minutes. Better than benadryl that game is

I downloaded the demo for both 'Ratchet & Clank' and 'Toy Home' tonight. I'll let my son try them both tomorrow to see if he likes them (although I'm sure he will). The downloads took longer than expected, but it's nice that they are available -- especially for free.

To pbicich: he's already hooked on Webkins on the PC. My wife and I have to fight with him just to get on our own computers.

You can try two games from the PSN network (under $9.99) for kid's. I have fun playing with my younger cousin when the come to visit.

GripShift

Super Rub 'a' Dub (the kid's can use motion sensing to control the game, like the Wii)

Good idea. $9.99 sure beats $49 or $59.99.

Then again, my son seems to be pretty satisfied with the free "demo" downloads. I know that will change soon, but for now it's pretty nice!

My 6yr old daughter loves Virtual Tennis. The whole family likes it. She really likes the mini games it has. Plus, this can be had for cheap. you might be able to find it for $19.99, if you look around.

Good news... I just bought the new 80GB PS3 combo, which can play the older PS2 games. So I just opened the door to a lot more games. Yeah!

I'll be returning the PS3 I bought a few days ago, then eBaying the MetalGear4 game that came with the combo (way too violent for my son -- my wife would never allow it).
