A movie like Dog Day Afternoon
could be scanned at 8K or higher. It could also theoretically look better than the current (exceptional) Blu-Ray. 10% better? 20%? 1%? The reality is unknown, but the potential is likewise unknown when dealing with the film format.
EDIT: I think a good idea for the thread is to not attempt to rank every title, unlike the Tier thread. Only mention discs that feel captures the (best guess) intent of the filmmakers and of filmic properties. (So, although Warners' release of The Searchers
is demo-quality in many ways, the controversy about its colour timing could mean that it wouldn't be listed -for good or ill - in this thread)
Throw out recent Digital Intermediates. Capture format (2K, 4K, 8K) can be separated in categories.
I would argue 2K is still viable for a thread like this. Heck, even the old Casablanca transfer I would deem worthy for inclusion. Though I would still rank the new release higher.
