Did you all buy the $100 warrenty for 4 years? Think I should buy it, or will need it?
I think I will roll the dice with this! I figure if it gonna act up it should be in the first year! LOL!

Stupid

Stupid is as stupid does...........but alas you got to use the TV for 2 months for an extra 30 American Presidents Portraits.

I've got a question for you guys that know more then I do. I just ordered a DVI to HDMI cable to run from my computer to the TV so I can watch Netflix. My computer video card has 2 DVI outputs. I have one plugged into my computer monitor. Do all I need to do is hook the DVI/HDMI cable to the extra DVI slot on my computer and plug the HDMI end in the TV? One of the joys we old guys get is watching TV since the price of going to a movie is so expensive.

I want to thank everyone for their reviews with this tv. I've learned quite a bit of new things. I currently have a Samsung 32' t3242h in my living room and I wanted to get a 40+ in. tv to replace that. I've been very happy with my samsung, but I've had it for two years and paid amost $950 when I got it. If this tv, at 42' shows as good as a picture as my samsung, at $597, I'll be very happy. I'll be ordering it from best buy tomorrow.

Stopped by Best Buy today to check out the set, the demo reel stopped working about 5 minutes after I got there, and they turned all the TV's to the only broadcast station they could get without an antenna.

This one was on the wall next to a Sony LCD that cost 3x as much, and, as you would expect, looked noticeably better, was less washed out. (I wish I had brought someone's settings to tune the Dynex) What I found interesting is that the Dynex set was lagging behind the Sony a few frames. This was most obvious when the show would cut from a dark screen to a bright one. I would assume this means there's a difference processing delay between the two sets, but I'm not completely sure. This made me worry about a larger than average delay showing up in any games that might be played on it. Does anyone know if what I'm assuming is a global processing delay actually is?

I just got refunded an extra 107$$ since it went on sale today! Hurray.
Yep, got my difference refunded too. This TV just keeps on delivering!

I didn't bother with the warranty because my credit card gives me a year and outside of that I'd just toss it. Imagine TV prices this time next year.

Can any of the owners comment on whether the "brightness" setting controls the backlight of the set, the black point of the grayscale curve or some combination thereof? (The online manual does not show an independent backlight control option in the menus.) I'd like to pick this one up as a bedroom set but would be annoyed if the backlight cannot be adjusted way down since it will mostly be viewed in the dark. Thanks.

The cable should take care of the video part, but you will need to connect your PC audio out to a receiver for the sound (means no sound will come from your tv). Or if your video card is the AMD HD3xxx / 4xxx, you should able to get a special DVI->HDMI adaptor, which will send both video and sound from your DVI out to the HDMI cable, then to your TV.

Did you try to return it? They told me that I had until 30 days AFTER CHRISTMAS to return it. They know people are buying Christmas presents and are extending the return policy because of that. I don't know when they started that, though.

The backlight does not seem to be affected by any of the settings.

I assume that if it is even possible to adjust it, it would be in a service menu. I don't think anyone even knows yet if a service menu exists for this tv.

Oh, thanks for the tips, will try tomorrow.

Edit:

Just check their web site.... the purchase must be between Nov 1 to Dec 24 to qualify for holiday return policy, no luck for me

I just grabbed this for the great $600 price - have to go tomorrow to pick it up

I am looking at a wall mount at Costo.com ($100 for full motion), but wanted to confirm the hole pattern on the TV

Here is what the mount says it can do:
Universal Hole Patterns maximum: 15.5H x 28W/ 400mm x 690mm
Includes VESA® Standard Patterns: 100 x 100mm, 100 x 200mm, 200 x 200mm, 200 x 400mm, 400 x 400mm, 200mm x 600mm and 400 x 600mm

Will it work?

First off, thanks for this forum, and this thread! I've been watching this Dynex for a couple months, and finally pulled the trigger. I got it for $750 after tax, including the 4-year warranty. I'll have to say, I fix pc's and assist in TV sales/installs for a competitor, and I'm VERY impressed with this television. I can't believe it's a mid/bottom tier brand, honestly.

WhiteT, I actually like these settings very much. I used them for my SD signal, except i have NR set midway, I watch alot of old reruns like Cosby Show, and the NR really cleans up the picture.

Q's settings were eye blistering bright to me, it looked good, but just way to strong for my taste/room setup. Maybe when I setup my HDMI signal on my PS3, they'll be more appropriate?

If the mount says it is made for the 42" range, it will work, VESA Standards are just that, a standard.

Just so you know, Best Buy routinely configures and connects some TV's better that they'd like to sell more often than others to look better on purpose.

The lag could also be why they shut down the feed, maybe they were having technical difficulties.

I got it, but I also went to dynex's website, where they have parts and their pricing, and honestly, the parts for this tv are pretty reasonable. Still, now you have a 5 year warranty, and still paid less than a top tier brand with only 1 year warranty.

got the TV ... connected via VGA .. desktop shows up as 1920 x 1080 but when i'm running an avi upconverted to 1920 x 1080 it shrinks it to 1280x1024 .. is it cuz i'm on VGA??? (720p works fine)

I've got a dual monitor setup w/ the dvi to the main acer monitor and the vga going to the dynex lcd on a 6600gt set to display video on the secondary display (dynex).

Could be the cable, or you might want to try a DVI to HDMI to the Dynex.

VGA should work fine. Are you saying that when you play an avi on your computer, your computer automatically changes it's resolution to 1280x1024? That doesn't make sense, you computer shouldn't change its screen resolution by itself.

I thought Dynex was Best Buy's in house brand? Wouldn't they make more of a profit margin from those?

when i launch the .avi in media player classic the resolution on the dynex changes from 1920 x 1080 to 1280 x 1024. the avi is upconverted in ffdshow configurator.

when no video is playing the resolution is 1920 x 1080. the acer is the main screen so when i move my mouse all the way to the right it goes over to the dynex. but when video is playing the video card sets it to be maximize(full screen mode) on the dynex then it changes resolutions to 1280 x 1024.

wow new faces!! that's good....

first about my settings, remember my settings are from THX certify and you can adjusted they way that you like it!! I'm really happy with my set and for HD broadcast/blu-ray/gaming is amazing. not trying my PC (laptop) on the TV because is not worthy so I don't know nothing about that, for me the set is doing the job really good for sports, news, shows, movies and gaming! enjoy your set and welcome aboard!!
jack,

I'm not an expert like some of you guys but if I remember isn't an .avi's resolution max at 640x480. So the Dynex is doubling your resolution and automatically doing the best resolution it can for an .avi file. Maybe you may want to use the zoom feature to see if it stretches out more but it would probably look worse. Better yet look on page 24 of the instruction manual.

Q, Thanx for your settings from the calibration. They are the best I've seen so far.
Thinking about snagging this but can't find anywhere: is it a glossy or a matte finish?
aj,

It's flat black not glossy. That's one of the great reasons this is better then the higher $ Sony, Samsung's, Kuru's etc. No glare. I especially like it at night with all the lights out. All you see is the picture and not the frame or bezel. BTW: The bezel is the sturdiest I've seen on an LCD. What a great machine this has turned out to be. A real sleeper.
I'm thinking about picking one of these up to replace my 10 year old Toshiba Cinema Series 27in. Sources will include comcast HD digital cable, xbox 360, and sometimes computers.

The xbox 360 gets a lot of use -- a little for gaming and a lot for streaming divx & h.264 videos I've encoded on my pc which it works great for. My xbox 360 was purchased before they added hdmi to it so it doesn't have that. It is currently connected to my tv through component, but would it be better to use a vga connector to connect it to an HDTV such as this one? Would that be capable of displaying 1080p unlike component?
How is the overall quality of this one compared to other models??
oh by the way hello everyone

avi resolution is whatever the encoder makes it.

btw
some basic maths.
640x480=307,200
1920x1080=2,073,600
doubling?
no.....
