I have the Pioneer Pro 111-Fd.

I bought it from a Best Buy in 2008.

I was just poking around the website, and noticed Best Buy didn't have any Pioneer TVs anymore on their website.

I then went to Pioneer's website, and tried to find which stores currently carried the Elite series TVs. No results were returned.

I know Pioneer was going to outsource the panel soon after 2008. But does this mean they don't claim any ownership to the Kuros anymore?

Is it still possible for someone to buy one, either online, or from a brick-and-mortar store?

Pioneer's plasma division went out of business and the remaining inventory of 9gs is getting smaller and smaller.

can anyone tell me about this unit...

That would be a smoking deal if it is indeed in mint condition , it would be worth at least twice that much, probably more like $3500 or even more.

For a TV that is 5 years old and has 1365x768 resolution and 1 HDMI input?

Exactly what James said but also keep in mind Pioneer is still providing any warranty work needed and im sure will for a few more years at a minimum .

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG!

My 'lucky' score kuro 111fd has an audible buzzing from the sitting position. Mind you I don't have a overly keen ear, but definitely distracting.
For the record i know many plasma have some buzz, but my old samsung I had to stand right next to it to hear anything and nothing from a few feet away.
I've had it on for ~1 hour, hoping it might go away?
I guess I'll call the store and see if they could actually repair it.

BTW, phenomenal picture out of the (used) box.

It can't be repaired, so don't bother trying to get the store to do anything about it. Turn on Energy Save Mode 2....that should help a lot.
[Menu > Setup > Power Control > Energy Save = Mode 2]

Why did it go out of business? What did they do wrong?

Not that I'm looking for a TV, but what would be the next closest thing to the Pioneer Elites?

They didn't "do anything wrong." Pioneer made a business decision to eliminate unprofitable divisions in a very tough economic environment, as companies do all the time. That meant axing the Kuros.

Apparently, Panasonic is using some of Pioneer's technology, and they certainly make nice plasmas. But I don't know what's currently considered the "next best" after the Kuros, which still reign supreme.

Sorry to hear that But unfortunately the buzz wont get better but if anything it could get louder Knock on wood no buzz with my Kuro ,about 4 months old with around 600 hours logged . Good luck with your display I hope you can get everything worked out . More than likely it was probably a return because of the buzz im guessing .

I just looked at a review of the Panasonic VT 25 on CNET and they said it was the best set they've ever tested. Which is really surprising to me because they loved the Kuro.

Ya they said similar results about the Panny V10 and then removed it from there top choice because of customer complaints about the ever so famous black level rise problems im sure you've read about on various threads here .

Perhaps the best 3D set, got a link to where you read that?

Actually for 2D picture quality they said it was among the best. Best black level of any non-Kuro and color doesn't quite equal that of our reference which is a Kuro

Yep.

Us, the consumers are at fault..........sadly the vast majority of consumers are happy with a lot less than what our Kuro's provide. Furthermore, even without the troubled economy the vast majority of consumers just will not spend what we spent on our HDTVs.

Why do you think it was more unprofitable for Pioneer, compared to their peers?

The full quote is "Standard exceptions aside, it's the best 2D TV we've ever tested". If you click on the hot-linked "Standard exceptions", you're led to their review of the Pioneer PRO-111.

Here's the link for the CNET review of the VT25:

What I think is Pioneer never offered an entry level HDTV model, all of their offerings were in the upper middle end on up. Furthermore, this is just a guess but I somehow think the word LCD had something to do with it, plasma YUCK, I want an LCD!!! ??

Those are reasonable guesses. You are right, they never did offer an entry level HDTV.

Thanks for your response.

I'd add to James' comments: I just don't think the market sufficiently justified $5,000-6,000 TVs when most consumers could go to Costco and see a great big Vizio that looked "good enough" for less that $1000. Yes, there's obviously us, who wouldn't settled for anything less than our Kuros....but apparently not enough of us to support all the R&D and production costs that go into making a SOTA plasma. It was super-niche in an already niche market, and Pioneer was losing money.

I think you're probably right. The salesman said it was never actually sold. It was held, then someone backed out, then it was "forgotten" in the warehouse. While I took the STORY with a grain of salt I wasn't going to call him out without proof. Now that it is home and I was able to get a better look it's clear by the markings on the back that it was mounted before. Plus most of the packaging had been repacked by someone other than the factory.
I haven't been able to get into the menu yet to check the hours. Supposedly he said around 200 hours, but well, so far nothing else he said was true so gotta figure that was a lie also.

Funny side note, the delivery guys gave me an extra stand that looks like it belongs to a Samsung and there were two color sensors in the box.

I'm half tempted to just return it and buy the next best thing until some actually comes about with a true kuro replacement (that I can afford LOL).

I dont think I could tolerate the buzz either but everyone's different. I bet if it was wall mounted it probably buzzed even louder being closer to the wall . "Some" salesman will tell you what ever to make you feel better about the sale or make the sale . I think I would take it back if I were you to and find some thing comparable that doesnt buzz . That is a bummer though because these Kuros have beautiful PQ but im sure you'll be able to find something that will make you just as happy that doesnt buzz .
