I have the 60" 151 and for a while I had been sitting 12 feet away. Sometimes I'll pull up a chair in front of the couch and sit around 9 feet away and I can definitely see a difference in detail. It also depends on what I'm watching (1080p of course), but even when I'm watching Dexter, I can get about 3 or 4 feet away and I can see even more detail, the picture does not degrade at all. The only problem with sitting 4-6 away is that I notice noise in the picture a lot more, so I guess it just depends. I could definitely benefit from pulling the couch forward a couple feet though. =)

The room also makes a difference, ambient light should be kept to a minimum. A dark room along with properly set-up bias backlighting is ideal IMO. Although I will admit that I like a little room light very often, for that I have a lamp with a low wattage bulb behind and to the side of my 151, it still de-grades the PQ to some degree but its not much.

A THREAD on bias backlighting.

HERE is what I have behind my 151.

Hello,
I just recently got a very sweet deal on a Pioneer Elite PRO101FD. I was able to get the monitor new in box, a stand, and the 4 year best buy black tie warranty all for under $2000. I simply could not pass this deal up, can you blame me?

Unquestionably, I know this is the display to have in terms of picture quality, but my concern is that it may be too small. 50" is nothing to sneeze at, and I'm looking to set it in my bedroom. I already own a 151FD that I also got a sweet deal on (TV new in box with 4 year black tie warranty for under $4000 a year ago). I have no regrets of going bigger, hence my regret for going smaller in the bedroom.

I realize I can be cruel and resale my newly acquired Elite for a profit and buy a larger Panasonic TV with comparable picture quality and even have enough money left for a small sound system. What do you think?

Hello all,

I am very excited, for I will be purchasing my first HDTV. Well in reality I will be buying my first TV, the TV that I currently own is an old family set that was passed on to me. The current set that I have is, hold on to something (I mean it, hold on to something), is a 30 something inch Zennith from the early 90's, hell it might even be from the late 80's. So as you can see I am waaaaay, and I mean waaaaaaaaaaaaay overdue for a new set.

After a whole lot of research I have come to the conclusion that KURO is the way to go. However I have a few questions, and so I turn to you guys.

First off I need to decide between the 111 or the 101. From my understanding the differences between these two sets are the speakers, stand, and tuner(that the 111 does have, and the 101 doesnt). Is this correct? Also the 101 has slightly better picture, (deeper blacks), and it also has additional menu/calibration options. Is there any thing else that I am missing?
In your guys which set offers the best PQ? Which is the best overall set?
I can do without the speakers and stand. I will be buying a surround sound system and plan on wall mounting the set. However I dont plan on installing cable/sattlelite any time soon. Therefore the lack of a tuner seems to be a big issue. Is it possible to simply buy an external tuner and be able to watch broadcast TV? Or is there any other fix to this?

Lastly, and this probably shoul of been my first question, is a Kuro my best option? Why do I ask this? Well what sets KUROs appart from other sets is their superior black levels. Do I need to be in a pitch black room to truely enjoy from these black levels. If purchased, the set would be going into a room with only one window. So altough it isnt the brightest room in the world (atleast not as bright as the living room) it is also not the darkest of rooms. Given these circumstances would a KURO still be the best choice for the ultimate PQ?

I have been lurking on these forums for quite some time. I am well aware that many of you guys are very knowledgeable with the topic at hand. Because of this I would appreciate any and all help with these questions, along with any other advice or opinions you might have as they pertain to my particular situation. THANKS!!!

60" to a 50" is a big drop in size but being that it'll be in your bedroom deppending on your size room it might not be to bad. I went from a Panny 65v10 to 60'' Kuro and noticed the size difference but im use to it now and plus my Kuro made up for it in PQ

Depends on what your smoking, I suppose if it was some good sh!t the Panny could look AS GOOD as the Kuro, if it was some REALLY good sh!t it might even look better.
But if you got some very low quality stuff then the truth is gonna stand out.
What truth? ....... That no Panny can quite hang with a good, properly calibrated Kuro, PERIOD. End of discussion.

Thanks James, that was hilarious. Somehow I knew that was coming. Owning a 151 already, I think I'm spoiled rotten with my TVs and anything less than a Kuro would leave me second guessing, and having nightmares at night.

Nightmares at night would be a understatement

It will happen one day, but with the current economy and stuff there is no telling when. What will happen you ask? Our Kuros will get beaten, it aint gonna be my a whole lot because there is not a whole lot more PQ to be had.

Some day guys. Personally I will be happy with an even match and more size, 70 or 80 inches would be sweet. But who knows, I mean I am sure the entire display industry watched in awe as Pioneer's Plasma division closed its doors....there may not be enough money up here in the upper end display market to be had to make it worthwhile to anyone.

Perhaps we all better start looking and buy another Kuro to put into a heated storage or something.

It'll be when 4K hits, about 2-5 years from now, except for Panny's 1XX" screen that has little to feed it.

Maybe OLED will do it someday.

Haven't checked the thread in awhile. Guess I just wanted to vent a little, and push this thing towards 24K posts....

Moved to a newer/bigger/better house ~35 miles away from the current one over the past week. Hired movers to take care of the big and heavy stuff, including my precious 151. Unfortunately, the morning they showed up, I realized that I had moved most of my tools to the new house already, and the stand couldn't be removed with a standard phillips head driver. I assume the sheer weight of the display had put the bolts in a bind over time.

Having kept the packaging materials in their entirety since I bought it, this was ... disconcerting to say the least. No, I'll go further than that. I damned near had a full blown panic attack.

In the end, I was able to use the original packaging to bind the top as it was shipped, and fabricated a super tight counterpart on the bottom of the display with tightly wrapped towels to keep the bottom of the panel constrained within the giant outer box cover. The stand was allowed to protrude from the bottom for it to rest on, and the truck fasteners were tightened as best as possible.

In the end, the trip was successful, my nausea subsided after an immediate test, and everyone is living happily ever after.

Oh, and another thing. Not sure if anyone's heard yet but it seems the upcoming PS3 firmware update (3.40) will enable true color output via HDMI. Not sure what this means for calibrated sets.

Panasonic released three commercial LARGE screens (83" and up) starting at about $12K up to just over $80K for them. The 83" and next size up are 1920 x 1080p, but the largest one, well over 100" is 4K, or (I think) 4096 x 2180p

Hello all

I was out of touch with the forum and pioneer elites for 2 years but After lot of efforts, one full day driving, at last i got my 151 fd on premium price today.Already ordered oppo 83, now looking for a good reciever and speaker set up.I don't own a home yet so i would like to stay with 5.1 audio but i would like to go for the best reciever (7.1) for my 151.Pls. advice me

I don't want to surf on internet on my 151 fd with my existing laptop, but i am also looking for a full 1080p Laptop which i can connect to reciever or tv.

Not much of a TV programme watcher but my home ministry(my better half) never miss hindi Dramas(operas) on Indian channels ,which are not in Hi-def, any reciever's upscaler will do improvement in that ? or my 151's upscaler is enough
its a shaw digital box.

Why ppl. use divxDVD players ?I saw my movies on my office PC with DIVX player , Can we rip those movies and watch them on 151 ?is it worth it,i saw many downloads are available in 720pdivx format.

Thanks in advance

Congrats on your new setup. Most of your questions really don't have much to do with the 151FD, but with sources, so you'd probably get them better-addressed in the appropriate threads (receivers, DIVX, HTPCs, etc). Personally, I would focus on the audio features you want in a receiver, since you'll probably not even use its upscaler. Without using its video processing, there's really no such thing as "the best receiver for your 151." The receiver will just be passing the signal through and act as your source switcher, so it'll have no bearing on the 151's performance.

To answer your one specific 151 question, it does have an excellent upscaler....the best I've seen in a TV. But that said, most dedicated video components, like the Oppo 83 you've ordered, will do it at least as well if not better. You'll probably upscale at the source level, but when you don't, the 151 will do a great job too.

Thanks for showing the way "progprog"

I will go in other threads for other stuff but upscaler issue is on my top of the list, as i will be using shaw digital box for South Asian channels and thats the biggest challange as i mentioned earlier.I myself will be watching blu-ray or other DVDs 2-3 times a week just movies.shall i connect the cable box directly to tv through component cables or route through a reciever with a good upscaling capability ? SD cable on 60" screen making me look for a good upscaler.

Thanks & Regards

Well, the thing with SD cable is that the source is inherently pretty limited, and there's only so much you can do with poor signals. Do you intend to use HD cable service? That helps a lot, not just because you get HD signals for many channels, but because you usually get an HD box that upscales reasonably well (for the channels that aren't HD).

Ultimately, though, be prepared for SDTV to look pretty weak compared to BDs and DVDs from your new Oppo. While a 60" Kuro will produce optimal PQ with a high-quality source, it will also reveal every weakness in a crappy source.

Just a sidenote:

CNet has reviewed the Sony HX909 LED, the latest in a long line of alleged "Kuro-killers". It came up just a tad bit short on black levels, though it is apparently better in that area than the VT25. Seems to have some nagging issues like color drift though, which is disappointing given it's price tag.

There are maybe two LED heavyweights left to review this year, the Toshiba CELL and LG 9500, but so far it looks like the Pioneer will remain champ until at least 2011.
