I understand buying a dedicated universal player which will play all different formats (CD,SACD, DVD-A, DVD, blu-ray, etc.), will play them at better quality, will have better or equal response times to PS3, and will do better upconversion. But there is no such player in the market today. Everything available does a half-a$$ job and for a lot more dollars.
That is why what Oppo does at the moment is very critical. If they can come up with a fast universal player at around $500 with similar upconversion to 983, then we are talking about a viable alternative. But I can't recommend to anyone buying a Pioneer player today or even Panasonic for that matter when there is PS3
I can understand where you are coming from but not everyone looks at the PS3 the same way.
Some look at it totally closeminded and think of it as just a game console.
Some don't like the look of a PS3 and think a standalone is just more attractive.
Personally, I could not imagine my setup without a PS3.
I will take web-browsing, gaming console, video/microphone communication, movie/music/game/photo streaming & downloading, etc. over the couple things it does not have.
When I look at a standalone player that plays blu-rays and thats it, and compare it to the PS3 that is so much more, I can understand why you would wonder why someone would buy the standalone instead of the PS3.
But there are always a select few that need the things that the PS3 doesn't have and consider the lack of these things a deal-breaker.
Just like there are a select few that consider the few minor flaws that the Kuro's have as a dealbreaker (as insane as that sounds
But for most people, the PS3 is the best choice.
It is definitly the most popular Blu-ray player sold and the most popular here at AVS.
It is definitly capable of delivering an amazing blu-ray picture on my 151.
so I have no complaints.
