The picture today seems better than yesterday, it runs quiet , smooth etc. Im loving it so far!
Thanks for all of the insight

I have that size, if you mount it on the wall it seems bigger for some reason. I have been watching my blurays on it, they seem like new movies with the video on this TV (had a 52" LED rear projection TV).
And I watched "Fools Gold" on HBO HD last night. Kind of a dumb romantic comedy, but it takes place in the Caribbean and the video was amazing. The colors and the clear water blew me away.
Basically, I'm seeing a lot of detail I had missed before in these movies

I have been breaking in my 850 and have around 100 hours now. I setup your setting on my Custom Picture Mode and your settings look very nice on my set. Thanks for sharing.

I agree, before calibrating "sharpness" and other "enhancement" should be zilch.
Otherwise, how can a calibrator start with a baseline?

If the owner wishes to use these so-called features after calibration, so be it.

HC my last tv was a 19 inch deep crt from about 1997. Sanyo maybe? We do not have any flat screens in my house what so ever so going from this to the prosumer 46inch 850U its like a movie theater in my bedroom. I should have about 35 hours on it by later this afternoon. randomly when watching the tv i pop to cinema mode just to say WOW ive been watching it with all my settings around 12 and it still looks sweet. Soon i will be needed to get either another xbox for it or a blu ray player.

Going by your tag "Espnetboy3". the high def ESPN channels are worth the price of a high definition package from your cable/satellite folks.

I just purchased my 58" 850U on January 25th and so far I have been very impressed. One thing that I have noticed and I dont think it was like this when I first bought it is a area at the very top of the screen that flickers white in places, like the picture is not covering the entire screen.

It only happens on SD broadcast, I have never seen it on and HD broadcasts. Did I make an adjustment that caused this? Can I fix it with some simple adjustments? Is it defective?

Its normal. If you do not like it, turn the Size to "HD 1" in the settings. This will give you a 5% overscan and will hise that.

What that is that your seeing it the additional information sent by a station. It was originally meant to be hidden because TV used to all have a 5-10% overscan which could not really be changed easily. Today, with HD and everyone wanted to see every iota of the screen, this option has been implemented in almost every TV on the market.

BTW, my wife hates it any every time she sees it says, "We paid how much for this TV so we can see those white lines?"

Anyone know if the Amazon movies on demand feature announced for the 2009 models will be available with the VieraCast in the PZ850u models? Is this a firmware upgrade, or will this just automatically appear in the VieraCast menu? Or, are we out of luck?

Thank you Hammie . That's funny, my wife said the EXACT same thing. Of course their tune changes once they see a BD playing.

I have been looking at this thread for over a month and I have yet to see anyone that had calibration done with my model TV and a PS3. I am approaching 400 hours and I think I am ready for a calibration, now I just need to find someone very qualified, that has the right tools, and not to expensive to do the job in the Portland area.

Also wondering if it is going to make a huge difference if I am running my Verizon Fios feed (HDMI) and PS3 (HDMI) through my Yamaha RX-V1800 and then to my 58" 850U? Would I be better off feeding those directly to the TV?

I have VieraCast enabled and I have not seen any Amazon links listed. My TV also shipped with the latest software update. I tried to do the "Software update" in the menu and it came back with, "You have the latest software version installed"

I could very well be doing something wrong or looking in the wrong area for an update but I dont think so. They are saying "sometime this year" that could be now or December i guess ;-(

I was actually just asking this a page back!

I did a live chat with a panasonic rep via the Viera Concierge, he seemed to think the Amazon VOD service would only be available on new models. He said they may figure out a way to push it to already existing units, but there had been no talk about how to do so.

Which seems odd, how else would they fill the 'coming soon' sections? Or are we all duped on viera cast having added content? And how else would they distinguish the units in the store... "Both units have viera cast, but only this one has Amazon VOD". He even confirmed that if I wanted to take advantage of the VOD service, I should return my model and wait until it goes live!

Seems fishy to me. I actually decided to go with the 850U over the 85U because of the Amazon VOD... I will say, now that I read all the press released in more detail, they all say Panasonic has added Amazon VOD to it's 2009 models, 3 of them.

So who knows, I figured Viera Cast was Viera Cast, regardless of model.

According to the first article, Amazon VOD will be available for all VieraCast TV's. All it would take is a software update.

Quote:

Sometime later this year, owners of new and recent Panasonic plasma HDTVs will be able to stream videos rented from Amazon.com directly to their TVs. The companies announced their video-on-demand cooperation today at Panasonic's Consumer Electronics Shows news conference, where Panasonic executives also spoke about the company's initiatives with 3D HDTV and its efforts to go green.

The video-on-demand capability will be implemented through the company's VieraCast IPTV technology, It will mark the first time that Amazon's video on demand content will be available on TVs (as opposed to PCs or Macs). Panasonic began shipping its first VieraCast sets last year.

Panasonic is also doing its best to bring 3D HDTV (in full 1080p resolution) to both Hollywood studios and the masses at home. Officials say they are working with other vendors and Hollywood studios to establish 3D HDTV standards and are also finalizing 3D authoring tools in hopes of bringing consumer products to market in 2010.

During the news conference, Titantic director James Cameron appeared on video to extol Panasonic's efforts to make 3D HDTV mainstream, including providng equipment for the production of his sci-fic epic, Avatar, "You'll feel like you're in that alien rainforest," Cameron said.

Like several other companies here, Panasonic touted its efforts to go green, including developing new plasma sets that attain higher levels of brightness using less power than their predecessors. The company's latest plasma display prototype can maintain the same brightness as 2007 sets using one-third the power, Panasonic said.

Finally, Panasonic showed off what it touted as the world's thinnest plasma, with a panel 1/3 in thick. Here's a little video of that set that shows just how skinny it is:

Hooking up with digital content distributors is definitely the thing to do here at CES, and you ought to know that Panasonic isn't leaving Vegas without a partner of its own. In between announcing snazzy new HDTVs and a litany of camcorders, the company has proudly announced a partnership with Amazon that will bring Amazon Video on Demand material to VIERA Cast TVs. The service is expected to launch early this year, and quite honestly, we're hoping that this isn't the only release of this kind. For Panasonic's sake.

Watch out, Netflix, you have some competition. Panasonic has now announced that it is teaming with Amazon Video On Demand on their 2009 VIERA CAST enabled HDTVs and Blu-ray products. Grab yourself one and you will have access to over 40,000 titles. In addition, you can get YouTube, Picasa, Bloomberg News and weather. We have to admit we like VOD as they often have some freebies and that is a good thing. Look for the new VIERA CAST early this year

I would say the live chat guy didn't have a clue as to what he was talking about. I can't see it not being available in any Viera Cast TV through a future downalod upgrade, once they have it going with Amazon.

My tv is now around 50hrs. I have watched everythign stretched/zoomed if not Full HD broadcast. I have been running the break-in images on my SD card while at work and have ran the white bar before turning off my tv.

My picture settings are Standard mode with picture in the low teens and brightness around 10 color around 40. Is this good? Cinema color is on and i randomly change between cool norm warm picture settings.

When i get to about 80hrs should u bring up the color/picture/brightness or continue to baby it till the 100hr marker then rev it up a bit?

Thanks

I tried your settings last night, are you using these for blu-ray or HD-DVD? It was pushing the reds BIG time on my 58PZ850 and whites looked pink. I toned them down a bit but still feel they could use some tweaking.

I feel these look too washed out and yellow/greenish compared to the tweaked version of your settings but I'm still playing with all the combinations until I have it IFC calibrated.

Most ISF calibrators will run you $250-450 depending on where you are and how far they need to travel.

You can look here for someone in your area.

I have not noticed the red push on mine. As a matter of fact, when running the gray scale calibration following the curtpalme process using the HCFR software, my reds, green, and blues all stayed within 99-101%.

I may plug your settings in just to see the difference.

Those are Cnets settings, does ANYONE have settings that would be use for broadcast HDTV 1080i? Seems all of the tweaking and calibrating are stricly for viewing BluRay Discs... which i do not have at the moment.

Funny you should ask. I've been using the Standard setting for OTA HD and it looks reasonably correct to me but for only 2 or 3 stations. I'm finding that DirecTV's SD color settings are inconsistent as well so it looks like it will be impossible to find one setting that works for all stations.

I haven't tried robbyrockets settings yet just because I haven't taken the time to go into the sevice menu but I do think the default studio reference mode looks pretty good for BD movies so I use that as a comparison to any settings I plug in.

I plugged my original settings into the into the input for my HD-DVD player then tried yours on my BD input. I watched the same scenes from Bourne Ultimatum and King Kong, then put in Dark Knight. My HD-DVD settings looked washed out and too green/yelowish and yours looked like they were pushing the reds and generating some noise in dark scenes (again compared to studio ref mode). When I toned your settings down I tried messing with the color temp from Normal to Warm and Gamma from Normal to Mid. I was having a hard time getting things to look like what I felt was natural with accurate colors and a brightness that would be good for day use as well. I'm going to spend some more time messing with it tonight. The settings I posted were unfinished... the wife and I were trying to watch Mirrors and so I left them alone but omparing them to studio ref I think they look ok and am interested to hear what you think.

edit - cnet's settings look pretty good imo, but I think the W/B adjustments need to be tweaked to slightly cool the yellows that the Warm setting gives. Again just my eyes and no tech gear so YMMV.

I have used Robbyrocket's settings from day one. I did not do any service menu settings, just the user available ones. They look very good.
As far as breaking in, just avoid black bars for more than a couple of hours and maybe use the scrolling bar every once in a while. I have not seen any image retention on mine, watched "The Last Samuri" on bluray which is letter boxed last night. Watched the local news on their high definition channel which they present in 4:3 format as well.
And the cable high definition channels (including Encore,Starz, and HBO high definition) all look very good (if you get a chance, watch "Fools Gold" in high def for the video, not the movie itself. The video of the Caribbean water and sky with their colors is amazing to me).
I have Comcast cable in an older neighborhood which has not seen major cable upgrades in the last 5 years.

Here ya go

As far as break in you will hear different things from many owners but as long as you keep everything under 50 for the first 200hrs you can tweak after that. I've had a couple of scary IR cases on mine but after running the break in images or normal TV viewing they are gone! like a virgin on prom night So I just don't worry about it any more and I see that IR is less severe and does not last as long with the more hours I get on the TV.

Just got done with the 100 hour burn-in on my 46pz850u.
Impressed with the PQ.
The only real problem I have noticed so far is facial colors (a little too red).
Currently I am using CUSTOM in default mode.
Any suggestions?

I have the Panny 50" 850 TV and I found an interesting anomaly, or I should say perk... Could others who have Verizon Fios cable test this on their Sammy 850 remote?

What I found is that if you select the DBS/CBL remote function button then press the Sub Menu button, it will bring up the Fios TV Channel Guide. This is what I found...

1 - The Up/Dn channel buttons next to the Volume button moves through the guide selections as Page up or Page down.

2 - The Up/Dn arrows on the wheel with the OK in the middle, moves up or down the menu one selection at a time.

3 - The OK button chooses the selected channel.

4 - The Volume button works as normal.

5 - The Return button brings up the Upcoming Shows and Pay Per View menus.

6 - Exit button does as designed.

Now, I haven't programmed my remote so this must be a fluke or the remote is defaulted to Fios functioning.

I don't remember my installer doing anything to my remote, so I don't know why I have this function.

Does anyone else see this with the 850 remote?

Thanks,
Dennis

What a coincidence, we're both from Portland. But none the less, this allows me to put away my Fios remote and only have one remote to contend with.

Ok, I went back and played with the settings some more last night but I'm still not where I want them to be. I think for BD movies studio reference looks pretty damn good, although a tad dark for an LCD convert like myself. I've ended up back to the cnet settings but with the color temp to normal and gamma to normal.

Maybe tonight I will take the time to go into the service menu and plug in robbyrockets settings. Can anyone tell me if once those are put in are they only for that input?
Also , when putting in settings if u hit reset it resets to default just for that one setting correct? (ie.vivid, game, custom, standard)

Also how come the studio ref settings no matter what are overall a bit darker than custom settings that are setup the same?

I only use one input, so I have not tested this but according to the CNET review of the 50":

We appreciated the ability to adjust all of the five picture modes, including Studio Reference, and the fact that the Custom mode is independent per input.
