Great Response Kutter.. You have me leaning towards this over the 800. Hows Studio Ref mode for most of your viewing? Would this produce a good image for HDTV / Sports / Movies as a one-shot picture mode?

I having been using Scubasteve's modified settings and playing around from there. His settings from Page 1 were:

Studio ref mode
Picture: 46
Brightness: 45
Color: 41
Tint: -2
Sharpness: 50
Color Temp: Warm
Color mgmt: off
Digital Cinema Color: On
C.A.T.S. : Off
Video and Mosquito NR: off
Black Level: Light
24p: 60hz
HD size 2

Other that playing around with the 24p setting, I have not deviated too far from these settings. They work well in lower light but not great during the day.

For sports, hockey in particular, I don't like the "warm" color setting as the ice doesn't look white enough. I switch to Normal for this. I prefer a little more "punch" in the picture for sports, so definitely the "scubasteve" settings need a little tweaking for this.

You can set about five different settings per input, so I'm working on configuring things so I have my "go to" settings for evening viewing and then another set for during the day. The "Studio Ref" is a good starting point, but I did like ScubaSteve's adjustments.

Finally - I'm actually really enjoying the VieraCast feature - especially the ability to view my photo's using Picasa. I ended up downloading Picasa on my PC and installing it. I haven't used it in quite a while and they added some really nice features. I then created some web albums with my digital photo's and sync'd them to the web. I then went to the Panny and access Picasa photoviewer through VieraCast and watched some slideshows of my pictures. It worked really well and is definitely very slick. I also tried the YouTube functionality and found it also worked quite well. I tried the Stock Market ticker and looked up a few stocks. It worked well but I would have liked to have the ability to save a few favorites here rather than having to reenter the stock each time. The weather portion was fine but I couldn't seem to get weather for cities outside the U.S. Initially I wasn't sure I would care for the VieraCast, but now I see myself likely using it. Hopefully they add some other interesting features in the future.

Hey, I haven't heard anything on the below? Can someone please pull out a tape measure and help.

Just ordered a TH-58PZ850U from US-Appliance. It should arrive in 7-10 Days. I am replacing my 2 year old 52" Sharp Aquos. I am excited, but a little nervous since this will be my first plasma TV.

I have some questions on some measurements I need to find out so I can get my wall mount positioned just right.

What are the measurements for:

The top wall mount holes to the top of the TV
The bottom wall mount holes to the bottom of the TV
The top of the rear panel connection cluster to the bottom of the wallmount holes
The bottom of the rear panel connection cluster to the bottom of the TV

Thank you in advance to anyone who can take a look at the back for their TH-58PZ850U and relay this information.

Joined the club. Just replaced my 5 year old 42PX25U plama with the 50PZ850. so far so good. running some break in slides but watching normal setting during the evening. paired it with the BD35, both direct from Panny, delivered for about $2K. Not a bad deal considering I paid $5K for the 42" back in the day (the 42PX25U still has a great picture). Looking forward to getting some hours on the display. Thanks to all who have posted settings.

Just joined the club with rrleon1. Same deal too as it was too hard to pass up the TV and Bluray with the discount.

For us, it was a big upgrade replacing an old CRT HDTV in our family room (and other equally old equipment). We are keeping the Boston in-walls but the receiver is also getting the upgrade to a new Denon and just now looking for a new sub. We have a 120" theater upstairs so this one is focused on TV watching and an occasional movie for the wife when I am out of town.

Just got it mounted last night and my son is having a great time calling out the colors as the cycle through the break-in SD! Went with the XL Sanus mount and the articulation is great for our location.

Probably not. You would need some form of Media server device be it your AppleTv or a PS3 or whatever.

With my 58-PZ850U I'm running:

Definitive Technologies BP2002 Left and Right
Definitive Technologies C/L/R 3000 Center channel. Recent upgrade from the C/L/R 2002 which I moved to a secondary system.

These three speaks all have a built in sub (12" in the towers, 10" in the center channel), which is pretty slick.

I have a set of Def Tech BP2X for surrounds.

Receiver is a Yamaha RX-V2700.

For Bluray I'm using a PS3. I have a 360 Elite with an HD-DVD that gets less and less use these days for moviesbut I've got a few disks that I go back and replay including Planet Earth series, Transformers and the Matrix. I'm out of the country right now, but looking forward to trying the Netflix streaming with the recent Xbox Live update.

Other things I have hooked up including a Sony 300 disk DVD changer, Scientific Atlantic HD DVR with a 500GB WD external drive for added storage, and a Nintendo Wii. I'm using a Harmony One for the remote.

Has anyone heard any news on whether Panasonic and Netflix are working to bring Netflix downloads to VieraCast?

Left to right is 26 2/16" or 660mm
Up and down is 12 9/16 " or 320mm
Measurments are from center hole to center hole
TH-58PZ850u Dimensions (H x W x D) 35.4'' x 56.9'' x 4.3''
So what you are asking is approximately 7.68" or 195mm for top VESA hole to top of TV and bottom VESA hole to bottom of TV about 15.11 or 384mm

That is exactly what I was asking for. I take it these are from the center of the whole?

Again, I appreciate you taking the time to do this. My delivery from US-Appliance is taking a little longer than I would like. It was stuck in the Indiana distribution center for a week. :-(

I'm quite close to making my purchase of a 58" 850 from a forum sponsor. I'm still worried about the CNet review of the 800 over the 850 as far as color issues. It puts the 850 a notch below a couple other sets I'm considering.

What I'd really like to know is if the 850 can have additional tuning done to it by an ISF pro using hidden menus to bring this set as close to the HDTV standards as the 800.

Also, should I get a PS-3, or a Panasonic BD-35?

Thanks!
I'm still playing around with the settings but I choose the 850 over the 800 because of the increased picture tuning flexibility for the user.
ISF calibration is all well and good in providing accurate whites, grey scales, and color temp settings but I doubt that you would want to watch everything with these "correct settings".
Below are the settings I'm currently using. I've played with the pro settings but am using the defaults for now. My settings:
Custom Mode
Picture: 85
Brightness: 80
Color: 38
Tint: 0
Sharpness: 0
Color Temp: Warm
Color mgmt: off
Digital Cinema Color: On
C.A.T.S. : Off
Video and Mosquito NR: off
Black Level: Light
24p: 60hz
HD size 1 (size 2 for Bluray)
ps. The BD35 is great!

Thanks for sharing this, dahnb2000. I'm looking to buy the '850u this week and hoped you'd offer some thoughts on a couple/few questions:
1) Is your "0" Sharpness setting equivalent to a mid-point such as one would find on a sliding tint bar, or is is totally disabled?

2) Do you find that the "Warm" color temp' setting gives too soft and red an image on certain programs?

3) What's the difference between HD sizes 1 and 2? Why is one better for BluRay and the other, presumbably, for TV programming?

4) Is it possible to have one set of settings in "Custom" mode and another in ProStudio mode, for example?

1) "O" sharpness is off. I got this from CNET's settings. I can't see any differences between sharpness at 0 or 50 or 100. It may matter with non-hd source material. I've only been using this setting for a couple of days.
2) Warm hasn't been a problem for me but it's a taste issue.
3) HD 2 is a pixel for pixel match & works with an accurate soursce such as bluray. Comcast in Santa Cruz doesn't broadcast an accurate signal. On Fox, there's a yellow bar on the right side of the screen; on NBC there's a green bar on the left side of the screen. CBS has noise at the top of the screen., ABC is okay, and non-hd stations have noise at the top of the screen so I use the HD1 setting which is a light "zoom" & eliminates this annoyance.
4) I don't know. I'll try it in the next day or 2 & see.
