Do you have this remote?

Attachment 188031

I disconnected the HDMI cable that connects the cable box to the TV, an 58PZ850U from the cable box. The cable box was powered off but the TV was powered on. When I reconnected the HDMI to the cable box, I saw sparks which is when I discovered the TV was on. Could this have damaged the HDMI cable or the TV?

Hey everyone. Quick question. I have a 58" pz850U. Is there any way to display what signal it is receiving? I would like to know if it is receiving 720p or 1080i/p or what frames (24,48 etc). Thanks for any help you can offer.

The "Info" button on the remote will give you resolution; I don't know about frame rate.

Is this normal? Seems that I can only change HD Size in HDMI 1.

Thanks!

It only works in 1080i or 1080p on my TH58-PZ850U. Press the INFO button to see what resolution you are using. My Yamaha RX-V3900 has a Pass Through option. When turned off, ESPN HD was broadcasting in 720P. The HD Size was grayed out on my TV. When I turned on my Yamaha, on the same HDMI input on my TV, it upconverts to 1080p. I was then able to change the HD Size. With the Yamaha off, I tried CBS HD (Two and a Half Men) and it was broadcast in 1080i. It also let me change the HD Size.

Did our thread die?

Anyone with this plasma that uses it for Amazon Video Streaming App ...

Looks like it supports SD videos, but not HD videos? Is that right? The reason it doesn't seem to be is because it's missing from the Device Registration selection list.

Just want everyone to know that my Panny PZ850U 65" is still as amazing today as the first day I bought it. Still has an amazing picture that puts all newer displays to shame. I also own the VT25 55" 3D display which is nice, but not as amazing as the PZ850U! Go figure! rolleyes.gif

Ok, so this TV DOES support VieraCast Amazon Instant Video - HD video. It's seems only your connection speed might limit you (wasn't a problem for me).

The reason it didn't appear to at first is because if you have the same movie in your "owned list" in both SD and HD formats ... it only shows the SD version for playback (these were given as a promo for buying the movie's real Blu-Ray from Amazon).

So, I just subscribed to Amazon Prime, and it's clear that HD format videos play fine. However, sound appears to be PCM (maybe ProLogic) ... not getting bitstreamed 5.1 to amp.

My BD-60 VieraCast app plays them the same way. Since the Amazon app behaved the same on both devices, I think I might look for a forum thread about a newer device to chat about this ... or find one dedicated to Amazon Instant Video in general.

I just upgraded to the GT50...however this puppy is still kicking strong in my bedroom!! Best TV I ever bought until the GT50, but the jury is still out. But who can argue that the pz850u is the Cadillac of plasma TVs!!!!

No argument here ...  smile.gif

We only use the projector for 1-2 movies a week. All day-time, and most night-time viewing is on our 850u 46-incher. We always get compliments on how nice the picture is. Fast motion is perfect and the full glass styling is nice too.

Wow, the thread back from the dead! I just wanted to agree with you about this wonderful display. It just looks as amazing today as it did when I bought it four years ago. Had it ISF calibrated after I bought it and haven't seen any evidence it's in need of a touch up. Have a brand new Oppo BDP-103 hooked up to it with a Darblet and the PQ is perfect. I'll probably keep this baby in my HT until 4K comes along. Nice to hear from other satisfied owners after such a long time.

I just signed up for Amazon prime and am using through VieraCast on my 50" 850. The video is HD for sure, but the audio is only coming in 2.0 via optical cable to my Denon AVR 4810.....can anyone confirm if any material is 5.1 or only 2.0 through Viera Cast?

Ya, optical. Really the only way because there is no HDMI 1.4 or ARC on this TV.

See above. No 5.1 for me either. My Panny BD-60 won't either. Let me know if you get it to work.

The guys in the Amazon Video thread say it's likely the Panny gear in general. Even the new 2012 Panasonic Blu-Ray players won't do it.

Mine is still going strong as well after 5 years. These are greats TVs

I don't remember how different the 850U is from the 800U...
But my 800U is still working, and I bought it [lightly] used back in Dec 2010.

Since the TV does not support ARC what is the best way to connect an audio/video receiver to get 5.1 audio? What audio is limited to 2.0? Can you connect you tv cable box to the receiver to get 5.1? If there is no ARC does this mean that all programming from your satellite box is 2.0 audio?

Connect cable/satellite box directly to AVR via HDMI. Connect all components to AVR.

No ARC just means internal tunners (ATSC and VieraCast) need SPDIF optical from TV to AVR for digital audio. With STBs, you aren't using ATSC, so that just leaves VieraCast.

Thanks. The manual for the tv says on page 49 at the bottom that if you connect a cable back from the digital audio out of the tv to the AVR (which I think AV receivers tell you to do if your tv does not have ARC) that the system switches to 2CH. I understand this to mean that any audio you use coming back from the tv over this connection is only 2 CH and you lose 5.1. If this is true what do you do to avoid this and do you then lose any features that you otherwise would have. Thanks.

All external devices audio are downconverted to stereo on the TV's optical digital audio output, but the internal TV tuner can provide DD5.1 from HD channels on the optical output.
If you use the TV's internal HD tuner you can connect the TV's optical audio output to your receiver for DD5.1
For all external devices (cable box/DVR, DVD player, Blu-ray player, Media Player, etc) you need to connect them directly to your receiver (via HDMI or optical or coax digital audio) to get multi-channel audio.

I'm pretty sure that is only when using the TV "as the center" of your system. We are instead using the AVR as "Center" or controller and the TV is only an output device.

Exception is for the "tuners" inside the TV or (saying another way) content generated by the TV itself ... ATSC and VieraCast (and possibly even SD slot). For those, use SPDIF Optical Digital cable to AVR. If content is digital and/or AC3/DTS ... it will bitstream to AVR for proper decoding and multi-channel playback.

That being said, I can't get the Amazon app to output AC3/DTS (see above in thread) but that appears to be a failing of the Amazon App (and Panasonic machines in general) and not really the circuitry. This is supported by the fact than you can get AC3/DTS over optical (to AVR) from ATSC tuner. Also, the fact that the Amazon App behaves the same way on my Panny BD-60.

That sounds like it should work. But what about page 49 that says "when audio from other equipment connected to this unit (Panasonic tv) via HDMI is output using "digital audio out" of this unit, the system switches to 2CH audio." The manual on my receiver (Onkyo 818) says that if your tv does not support Audio Return Channel (ARC) you need to connect an optical digital cable together with the HDMI cable to the AV receiver. This seems like it will return 2CH per the manual. Does an optical connection from my DTV box to the receiver get around this? Do I need to be concerned about this? What exactly is ARC?

It doesn't apply. You don't have anything connect that way. You are not using any HDMI INPUTS on the TV (or any other types of inputs for that matter) other than the main one.

Same with Onkyo 818 doc... Doesn't really apply. It assumes you are using the ATSC tuner in the TV, which you are not (you have STBs). However, you can run the extra cable for reasons stated in my previous post.

You don't need ARC support. We survived for years without it. All it does is save you from running an extra SPDIF cable (which is no big deal anyway).

The Onkyo 818 manual is referring to if you want audio from the TV's internal sources (like digital TV tuner) then you would connect the optical cable from the TV to the receiver.
ARC just allows that digital audio return channel on the HDMI connection from the receiver to the TV thats all - just saves adding the extra optical cable.
But for external sources with multi-channel audio you need to connect them directly to the receiver via HDMI or optical/coax digital audio cable, then you will get multi-channel audio from those sources.

Thanks for your help. So if I connect my DTV box to my Onkyo 818 receiver by HDMI do I also need to connect a digital optical out from the DTV box to the receiver? I assume no since HDMI handles everything. Am I correct?
