The True Dolby is the lossless version for 7.1, correct?

TrueHD, as with DTS-MA, can be either 5.1 or 7.1. There are very few 7.1 TrueHD titles. PCM is output as 2 channel over coax/optical.

So, your receiver is equiped with 7.1 channel analog ins. You can get TrueHD and DTS-MA that way with a player that is equiped with 5/7.1 analog outs.

AVR-1507 has 7.1 ext. in for analogue audio and there are players with 7.1 analogue out. You have to look for older models or pay a bit more for the newer ones as newer entry models don't have it any more. Since about 3 years ago nearly all can decode both HD audio formats.

I'll settle for current 5.1. I can live with that for now.

I've had a lot of BD players over the years and never had a problem with legacy 5.1. It's a non-issue.

analog legacy will not be an issue hd and lossless may not function for 5.1/7.1 and may degrade to 2channel if supported by the avr via analog/analog digital/sp/dif digital

As long as at least 5.1 remains accessible. The way the owners manuals were written led me to believe there was a issue.
I will admit, "lossless" would be a nice addition, but at this time, I'm not interested in upgrading the receiver. As long as 5.1 will work with what I have. (I don't want to go backwards )

As long as it is still 5.1, that's fine for now.

You don't need a new receiver to enjoy lossless. All that you need is a BD player with 5.1 or 7.1 analog outs.

Not only will you get 5.1 over optical or coax, the legacy DD 5.1 and DTS tracks run at higher bitrates on Blu-ray than on DVD. They sound great, rivaling lossless in quality. As others have noted, you can get lossless with a player that has multichannel analog outputs. But, the players are more expensive, the setup is not simple plug and play, and you may not hear any improvement over the high bitrate lossy codecs on Blu.

One way to find out I will order a LG 630 from Amazon. Liberal return policy. Only downfall is sales tax. I don't watch alot of DVD's, so spending double or triple won't give me any benefit.

I got a Blu-Ray player for Christmas (Sony BDP-S580) and hooked it up to my HT setup. To do this I decided to use the HDMI pass-thru on my Denon AVR-391 receiver.

I am confident that it is connected correctly from blu-ray IN to receiver and receiver OUT to tv. Audio works fine and the picture displays correctly. The problem I am getting is somewhat strange to describe as I have never seen it.

I am getting a few white pixels (I think) that will randomly appear in different places and then in random intervals less than 10 seconds apart a white very thin line across the screen will flash very quickly in different places on the screen.

I have no idea what this may be.

I tried a different, but same, HDMI cable and that did not work.

To resolve the issue temporarily I used HDMI from the blu-ray to the tv and then a coaxial audio cable to the receiver. This works fine, as it did with my previous up-converting dvd player that the blu-ray replaced.

Obvious question, what might it be and how can I fix it?

And second question, will the coaxial audio connection allow for DD-HD and DTS-HD? If so I will just keep it this way.

^^ Ah, the audio part at the end. No, coax and optical do not support lossless. You will get DD 5.1 and DTS over those connections.

What about the video issue? That is the cruz of my problem and I need a resolution so I CAN use HDMI Audio for lossless audio...

If I'm correct, the blu-ray spec requires that a separate AC3 (or any other mandatory) audio track must be present on blu-ray discs that contain a TrueHD track, because TrueHD support on players is optional. But some recent blu-ray titles contain only a (English) TrueHD track with an embedded (not "completely" separate) AC3 track. Wouldn't this mean that some old blu-ray players with no support for TrueHD, can't play any (English) audio at all? Or are all blu-ray players able to extract the embedded AC3 track from the TrueHD one?

If this is the case, what was the point of having an embedded AC3 track *and* a separate (duplicate) one (common on a lot of blu-rays, like (old) Warner's)?

I cannot find any corrections to make on BIslander's replies on the other place and what he said is based on facts. You don't need multiple opinions on statement of fact. If you don't believe him (and he is one of the most knowledgeable folks around on audio set-up) then you can verify the facts yourself by reading the Dolby Audio Coding Whitepaper which is available for public download. The co-author Roger Dressler also comes here so you can ask him (again) if necessary.

I'll just add that the media player you mentioned is not a BDP and therefore not required to conform to the specs or functionality of a BDP. In any case a new version has come out and who cares about obsolete media players and BDPs?

Have a 1 week old slim PS3 connected to a Marantz SR5005 (via HDMI), also new. Set the PS3 to output bitstream and all worked well until yesterday. Now there is no audio whatsoever with bitstream output and the AVR shows Stereo as the audio mode on the display! If I switch the PS3 to output LPCM everything is fine. My initial thought is that this is a PS3 problem but I suppose something could have gone wrong with the AVR. (Have posted this on both the PS3 thread and SR5005 thread but so far no responses.) Hope someone here might have some ideas.

I have an LG BD-390 bluray player connected via analog cables to my older Denon receiver. Have and HDMI cable going from the bluray to the TV (panasonic 65GT30). When I play blurays surround sound works as it should. However, when I play regular DVD's I'm only getting sounds from the front left and right speakers. Has anyone ever had this issue or know a fix?

i cant get my tv audio to work through my Phillips hts3306 blu ray home theater system. right now here is the setup:

digital audio out (dierct tv rec)to digital audio in-coax source(blu ray home theater system) HDMI out to HDTV-dvds play on HDMI2, satelite programming on HDMI 1-tv inputs

i put the blu ray system to source "coax in" and HDTV to input HDMI1 and i can't get the directv audio to play through the home theater speakers??

I have a oppo bd-93 connected thru HDMI to an Onkyo TX-NR709. I am also using the oppo as a sacd player.

Should i hook up the 5.1 analog connection of the oppo to the onkyo? Would i gain any benefit ?

Hi, I'm new member of this forum. Hope any of you are able to solve my problem. Few days ago I bought LG BD620 blu-ray player. It has no digital audio out (optical/coaxial) and only has 2 channel analog audio, 1 analog video, and 1 HDMI port. Below is the audio specification I got from LG website. It has capabilities to decode DTS and DD to 2ch (for those who connect using the stereo analog output, as I do now)

I realized that the only way to get multichannel audio out from this BD player is, CMIIW, by connecting it into AV Receiver with HDMI in, which unfortunately I don't have.

Then I remember that my TV - Panasonic TH-L32C30G comes with 3 HDMI input and 1 optical audio out. My questions are:

1. If I connect the BD player to TV using HDMI then connect the TV via optical to AVR, will it be able to reproduce the multichannel (DTS and Dolby Digital) using this kind of connection (BD Player - HDMI - TV - optical - AVR)

2. One of the Blu-Ray movies that I really want to watch with this BD player is LOTR Trilogy which only has English DTS HD and Portuguese Dolby Digital 5.1. Assuming that my TV could not decode DTS HD fed by the HDMI cable and pass it through optical, does this mean that only 2 channel/stereo will come from the speaker (downmix from DTS HD to DTS 2.0)

Currently I have no AV Receiver with optical input thus I can't test it myself. Due to budget limitation, I have plan to buy Chinese cheap DTS/AC3 Decoder which can decode DTS/AC3 input via optical and coaxial into multichannel analog audio.

Most TVs do not pass encoded multichannel audio from HDMI sources. So, you'll almost certainly be limited to stereo with your current set up.
