Sparty's Home Theater 2.35:1 Curved DIY screen

First off please let me know if this is the right forum to be posting this in.

OK to start things off special thanks to Eme1 for selling his Panny PT-AE2000 to me. Thanks to Aussie Bob for his curved screen prgm, and thanks to Randy Wood from Home Theater Brothers (HTB) for the anamorph lens and Marc Rumsey for helping to answer some of my questions.

Will be posting pics once I get a site to host images Today started out with a bang as I got started on making my CIH curved screen. My screen hieght is 45' and my 2.35:1 width would be 105.75' .

Screen build materials:

- 1 4x12 1/4 inch drywall cut down to 4x9
- 1 4x8 OSB 7/16ths
- 2 1x4 spruce boards
- 4 1x3 spruce boards

Traced out my top and bottom curves and proceded to nail/staple the 1x4 on the back and 2 on the sides. I then used the 1x3 and working from center out and placed one board every 16 inches. I then screwed the outside edge down in the zone where I will put the boarder.

If you and using drywall and only using one sheet I just remembered a trick you can use to get away from having screws to hold your drywall down. Of course the thinner the better when it comes to bending drywall. I used silicon and applied a generous amount to each of my support planks. Once I was happy with my drywall being centered in my frame I pressed down on all the supports and then tossed paint cans on top to give added weight till the silicon sets up. You can also get PL panel adhesive over silicon but, I find both work really well and the best part is no screw holes in the image zone to fill.

I will post pictures of these steps as soon as I can.

Next report: Spraying of the Black Widdow paint.

Yes, right spot, post picts.
Looks like neat project!

My brother in-law in Grand Haven will be building a HT this fall, and this is good info for him.

I'm just curious, when done before hanging if you could weigh or estimate the total weight of your screen assembled.

good luck.

Will give you total wieght.. it will weigh more now.. I broke it by mistake. grr. But was able to use 2 - 2x2's as cross supports over both breaks. I was putting a new 1/4 inch layer of drywall over top the old one as there was some blemishes that refused to sand away.

As I was pressing down on the new sheet to get the PL to grab it snapped in the middle on me. My heart literally skipped a beat.

Framing tip to all DIY'ers ... do not cheap out and use OSB to cut your curved screen frame from.. It was $7 for OSB and $14 for Spruce plywood 1/2inch. Got it back together buddy is spraying it for me.

Nice picts/progress, I'm really looking fwd to seeing "Spraying of the Black Widdow paint" and how much screen "pop" that gives you.
Somehow in all my avs forum reads I missed that thread until I saw it mentioned in your thread, seems to be the paint mixture to use now for DIY screens.
(since I'm a 2.35 DIY'er I've not looked much in the "normal" DIY screen section)

Maybe you'll be able to watch 4th of July fireworks on your new screen?
That would be neat.

Sorry to report but I have no shots of the screen being spray painted. I had a friend of mine spray it with his gun so I have no shots. BUT when we were moving it to my house we smudged the screen so I had to roll it.

Here is the shot I took, I noticed that the rolled on paint looked alot better than the spray on. It could be his gun, but there was a big difference btwn the 2 paints. In the picture the darker tan on the right side of the pic is the spray while the rest is the rolled.

Next are a few other pics as work progresses.

Used our framing laser to make sure my projector is in line with the center of the screen. Here is the laser at work on both the front and back wall.

Borrowed the idea of the lens mount from someone off this forum.. Can't recall who but good idea using plumbing parts.

FYI,
In photobucket you can click the third option underneath you photo to copy the image for forum posting and then paste in your text.

You can also add IMG tags around it to show in the thread like so:
