Best Headphone & PS3 Setup for Sound Quality

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
I am looking for the best headphone setup with a PS3, in terms of sound quality.
-I am looking for a setup that won't have any "white noise" or such.
-I also read that the PS3 supports 24bit or Hi-Def audio quality, but only can be heard through use of an HDMI 1.2a or better receiver.
I heard it from this thread
head-fi.org/forums/f46/au...roblem-330235/
-I have an HDMI 1080p Display and it has a headphone jack on the side of it,
I'm not sure of how to get a good setup using that jack.
So I have 3 questions.

1. For movies and gaming, should I get surround sound?
If yes, should I get an surround sound adapter with stereo phones?
or a 5.1/7.1 Headphone?

2. Which setup is better?
a.PS3 >-(HDMI Cable)->HDMI 1.2a(or better) Home Theater Receiver >-(Toslink Cable)-> Optical decoder>-(Cable depends on the headphones)-> Headphones

b.PS3 >-(HDMI Cable)->HDMI 1.2a(or better) Home Theater Receiver >-(Coaxial Cable)-> Amplifier>-(Cable depends on the headphones)-> Headphones

c.b.PS3 >-(HDMI Cable)->HDMI TV(has headphone jack on the side, no inbuilt audio)>-(Not sure which Cable)->Amplifier>-(Cable depends on the headphones)-> Headphones

d.PS3---Toslink---Mini Toslink Adapter---JVC---?---Headphone amp---DT880S
I got that setup from this thread
head-fi.org/forums/f4/rec...17/index3.html

e. Something else that you can recommend...

3. How can I use an headphone and a microphone with the PS3 at the same time?

1) Yes you should be getting surround sound for both movies and games.

2) Here it gets a little complex, if pure sound quality was you prefered choice you would go with HDMI from the PS3 to a Home Cinema amp then hook the headphones straight up to the headphone output of that amp, and make sure you have your PS3 set to only 2 channel. As far as I know there is no Dolby Headphone for the newer HD audio codecs (I could be wrong on this). The other way is to get something with "Dolby Headphone" like the JVC dolby headphone processor that they are referring to on headfi (I assume it is as your link is borked), that would get your surround sound albiet at lower quality as it will be only dolby digital AC-3 via toslink or coaxial digital.

3) Yes, the microphones for PS3 hook up either to USB or Bluetooth, no problems there.

I would just hook up the headphones to the TV for a starter to get an indication of whether you need to go down the path of upgrades. Have you got a decent set of headphones yet? the DT880s are at the upper end of the market, and aren't that cheap.

1. Don't get surround sound headphones. They generally suck. You'll be better off with stereo headphones and a DolbyHeadphone mixer.
2. Depends on your final solution.
3. Depends on your mic.

I've got Sennheiser HD-595 headphones and just ordered an AstroGaming Mixamp.

Ideal set up..DT880-HDMI-PS3-HK-Sony 7260-.. So you will get HD codecs.. HD codecs will work with DH, but is reduced to PLII, still a notice improvement in gamings/movies.

Thanks for the help guys.
Alright so far from what I have gathered from your posts I am considering getting a
-Yamaha HTR-6160 A/V Receiver
as for the headphones I need to decide between
-DT880
-Beyerdynamic HeadZone Game
-Beyerdynamic HeadZone Home
-Beyerdynamic A1 amplifier
-Astro A40 MixAmp
-Astro A40 Headset

So my Audio setup will be like this,
PS3(HDMI)
-> Yamaha 6160 (Toslink/Coaxial) -> A40 MixAmp/A1 amplifier -> One of those headphones.

I'll be using the PS eye for the microphone and camera.

I'll explain my reasoining below

What do you mean by these terms and item: HK Sony 7260? and DH? and PLII? I tried googling those but the results were vague. Anyways thanks though I'll consider the DT 880's

1. Well hopefully these HeadZone headphones should be good

2.) Well hopefuly they will get an HD audio codec soon, I'll contact my local dealer for Beyerdynamic if those HeadZone Home/Game headphones support HD Codec.

3.) I'll be using a PS Eye

I checked my TV's audio jack and my PS3 doesn't like it, I can hear good audio from putting my iPod headphones in the jack, despite the iPod Headphones male connecter being slightly loose in there as it is smaller,

I know my PS3 doesn't like it as when I goto Audio settings in the XMB, and then Set it through HDMI, it says my TV cannot support HDMI audio while it clearly does, as I can listen from it by simply connecting the HDMI cable to my HDMI LCD Monitor (BenQ FP241WV).

1. Well hopefully these Beyerdynamic 5.1 system HeadZone Game/Home headphones are good, as they are really expensive.

2.Well I wrote my solution up there
3.Going for the PS eye

Thanks for the links as well, thats where I got the idea of my new setup

higher quality speakers and headphones usually make a significantly larger difference than codecs. There are codecs or amps int he world that will make the difference between $40 and $150 headphones.

I LOVE my Astro A40 mixamp and Audio Technica AD700's. You can pinpoint where each and every sound is coming from. Very comfy and light too.
