DTV tuner advice

Hello everyone, I also posted this in the LCD TV forum but thought it might be better here.

I currently have an analog tv with a Zenith DTT900 DTV converter box and Ive been thinking of buying a new Toshiba Regza 37" 37RV530U LCD TV with integrated HDTV tuner.

My question is, as I live in a fringe reception area is there any chance that the built in tuner will be better in the Toshiba then the Zenith set top DTV converter box that I have now? Or, can I expect it to be the same or is it possible it could even be worse?

Any advice appreciated!

I believe the Zenith is generally thought to have about the best quality tuner currently available. My guess would be the Toshiba would be the same or worse than the Zenith. Of course your best answer would be from someone with that Toshiba(or similar) and the Zenith CECB in a fringe area(or access to attenuators).

Try the Toshiba. If it doesn't work well the Samsung 260F tuner could be added and it is about as good as you can get right now. However the Zenith converter box is way better if you have multipath problems. For just weak signals the Samsung should work fine if the Toshiba doesn't.

Thanks for the replies,

My next question is Im in no hurry to buy the TV. If I wait a little bit is it possible that some of the new TV's coming out towards the end of the year or just after New Years may have better tuners or is that unlikely?

Thanks,
Mike

The Toshiba probably uses a Funai tuner.

The Funai tuner I tried in the Philips DVDR3575H was every bit as good as the DTB-H260F. But the Zenith was even better.

So make of that what you will.

Hmmmm....

Sounds like maybe I should wait a while with my fringe reception espcially if the Zenith is the best thing around at the moment. The Zenith does well for me now on ABC, CBS, PBS and usually NBC but Fox and the CW and I think UPN or something tend to only come in at night and the morning. They tend to be just below consistent receiving strenght during the day most the time.

Or, I could try and raise my 91xg antenna up even higher, but I think Im at the height limit for my current mast setup so not sure I really want to dive into that....

Would raising the antenna up another 8-10ft possibly put me over the top on consistent signal strenght on those weaker channels? My current setup is somewhere around 22' above the ground. Is there anyway to estimate how much the signal will improve for each foot I raise it higher?
