Had a Denon receiver for over 10 years, but it's getting a little long in the tooth and I want HDMI goodness switching more than anything else.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? is the 1018 comparable to the 2809 or are they in different leagues? I can get the 1018 for 399.99 on boxing day or I can get the 2809 at cost which is 728 I believe.

This is a no brainer.....$399 vs. $728 = $328 difference to be put towards something else like speakers if you don't have any. Comparable AVR's but I think pioneer is a very well built receiver, it sounds awesome with power to spare, runs extremely cool (a sign of good amplifier design) and is very easy to use and has the least amount of reported problems in the forums compared to other AVR's. $399 is a steal!!!!! for this baby!

The main difference is that my sub initially worked with the front 3 speakers but recently the sub stopped working (no sound from it - not recognized by auto mcacc anymore, etc.) after I added my surround speakers. I could only presume that my sub went bad or something so I ended up sending it back to the retailer. Hopefully a new sub will work better. Perhaps a new receiver will do the trick for you as well.

In my case, the sub was perfectly fine. I tested it with another receiver, and it pumps out bass without a problem. So, I concluded that it's the receiver that is bad. The preout panel on the back was rather weak, and as I pushed in the RCA connectors, it moved quite a bit.

Fortunately, newegg took it back, so I'm getting a refund on this. Now I have to decide to go with another 1018 or something else. Bad experience always makes you hesitate to go with the same model...

Well Guys, thanks to your help I'm now the proud new owner of a 1018.

Setup went great and everything is working fine.

I did find something that isn't in the man and was hoping someone could shed some light on this. On page 30-31 of the man it gives standard surround sets like, Pro Logic, Pro logic 2 and so on, i found one that isn't listed ( NEURAL THX ) anyone find this and what is it.

I found it in the elite 01thx man. Seems they may have included something from the 01thx elite, but forgot to put it in the man.

Does this unit support 120hz on HDMI for 120hz TV's?
I ordered mine from BB tonight. Can't wait to get it hooked up.

I don't think HDMI cable can do above 60hz. The 120hz TV's take a signal with 60hz or less and the TV makes it 120hz. I don't know a lot about it so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's how it works.

Hi guys, Merry Christmas to everyone.

Got my PIONEER VSX-1018AH-K yesterday, hooked up the speakers (5.1) and a HDMI cable from the receiver to the tv (SAMSUNG LNT-4661).

Then proceeded to turn on the tv, turn on the receiver with the receiver button on the PIONEER remote, then plugged in the supplied microphone to the MCACC setup mic jack on the front panel.

The tv screen lighted up in black with the indication of how to proceed with the MCACC setup and to simply push ENTER on the remote.

The thing is, when i push the ENTER button on the remote, nothing happens !!
The arrows also produce no result !! I tried the MENU button on the remote: NOTHING !!!

So, what am i doing wrong ??

Maybe i got a lemon, grrrrrrrrrr

Thanks for your help.

Cheers.

Hey guys,

I just upgraded to this awesome system, but for some reason, it won't detect my center channel.

I have an old bose acoustimass 6 series II audio setup with a 2nd powered subwoofer coming out of the pre-out output. All the wires look like they're hooked up correctly.

Any Ideas on why this might be happening?

Thanks!

I finally got this unit and am trying to set it up. Everything via HDMI is working ok. However, I tried to hook my xbox360 up via component, and it was my understanding that the unit could output the 360's component signal via HDMI. So far I have been unable to get this to happen. I understand there is a video menu settings but the unit has not let me pull this menu up. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ya and she didn't even blink when I came in with the 1018. She said she has had the 01thx for 2 weeks hidden somewhere.

I think I'll keep her, been married to her for 31 years now.

I've had this same thing happen... I'm not sure, but I think our xbox's got confused during the transition to the new receiver, and it defaulted back to non-HD... so I don't think its the receiver, I think it might be the xbox. I was going to try this, but I had to leave town for xmas. I was going to try plugging in both the RCA input as well as the component input into the same A/V input.(say, dvd for instance) The receiver will look for video signal on Component, then regular RCA inputs. I *think* then the receiver will up rez the SD signal, then you can go to your xbox options and reset it to HD.

Not sure if that's gonna work, but that's what I was going to try before leaving town. Let me know if it works.

Well, I think I've read the last 50 pages of this thread over the last couple days, not to mention the Denon thread, other reviews, and trying to choose speakers. I had the 1018 in my cart on Pioneer last night and when I realized the coupon was good until the 31st I decided to wait until I was awake to make a decision.

I think for $100 more I'll go with the 01 but Pioneer is out of stock on both. Any deals for today, particularly the 01? From my search, Vanns comes closest to the Pioneer coupon rate on the 1018. Are all online authorized dealers also authorized for elite?

Thanks to all for the great info in this thread.

I will have to look into that. Maybe it is the xbox and not the receiver. Also, is there any tip to get into the video settings menu. For some reason when i try to get into it, it just gives me some message but nothing comes up on the screen.

Did you make sure to be on an input that is displaying correctly, i.e. HDMI1 and press the "reciever" button on the bottom right of the remote before pressing menu?

The remote is a bit strange that way.

Seems like a question that has been posted before, but I've tried everything I've read on those threads and I still only get "DIGITAL" on my Pio display. I do not know if the problem is with the bluray player or the AVR. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Post here or PM me. Thanks and merry Christmas!

BD player = Sony BDP S350
Audio Settings:
Audio Output Priority: HDMI
Audio (HDMI): Auto
BD Audio Setting: Direct
Audio ATT: Off
Dolby Digital: Dolby Digital
DTS: DTS
48kHz/96kHz PCM: 96kHz/24bit
Audio DRC: Auto
Downmix: Dolby Surround

Dark Knight Bluray - It says it has Dolby True HD on the case, but I cannot find any menu option to select an audio format.

Pioneer VSX 1018AH-K
Audio Settings:
Stream Direct

I'm trying to get True HD on my Pio. I cannot get it to come up. I just realized that I didn't actually type that.

Found it! I had to hit the "audio" button on the Sony S350 remote to cycle through the audio options. Those options do appear to be available in a menu.

When I cycle the "audio" button to english #2, TrueHD lights up on the Pio display. I still don't know why. I guess this is a better question for the Sony S350 thread. Sorry.

The audio tracks should be available under the pop up menu of the disc.

Im the Speaker B configuration it can definitely be done, as the A/B configuration plays the same source on both speaker A and B - you just have the ability to turn the A/B speakers on/off independent of each other.

As far as having them both setup when the "Surround Back" it setup as "Zone 2" Im not sure - I would like to try this myself, but havent just yet. You do obviously must have the receiver setup as "Zone 2" if you want to have the ability to play different sources in Zone 2, opposed to your main listening speakers.

If someone doenst get back to you before I get off work and back home to try this .. I was already planning to do so this evening.

I haven't received my 1018 yet but I was looking over the manual and have a question about Zone 2 or Multi-zone listening.

With my current Onkyo I have 7 speakers connected, 5 in the main room and 2 on the patio. In the main room I have a Front Left - Center - Front Right - Subwoofer - Surround Back Left - and Surround Back Right. On the patio I have 2 separate speakers.

Can I run this same set up with the 1018 or do I have to connect my current Surround Back speakers to the Surround Left/Right inputs and the speakers on the patio to the Surround Back Left/Right inputs? I do not want to use a separate amp/receiver to run the two Zone 2/Multizone speakers.

Yes, that is the crazy thing. The only audio options under the pop up menu is Language/subtitles and then something called "button control". I am not sure what "button control" even means as a BD option. However, it did cause me to look for other buttons on my Sony remote, which led me to cycling through the "audio" button options to find TrueHD (which was listed as the English #2 option as I cycled through the audio button options). I was just wondering why I could not find this in an actual menu. Anyone have this issue? Is it just a Dark Knight BD thing, or is it just my inability to open the right menu? Maybe I drank too much Christmas cheer yesterday.
It's the Language option where you select the HD audio. It would be nice if they made it more obvious. Lossy DD was the default when I watched "V" last night.
