Eventually it started working again at the normal distance of 10-15 feet.

I found my problem. I needed to push the RECEIVER button first. It then worked fine.

When I play the Dark Knight (in Bitstream w/ 2nd audio Off) my display shows Dolby Digital. Pg 33 of the manual says "Dolby HD" lights when the input is TrueHD. Would you fellow owners tell me what your display shows and what setting I might be missing when playing a TrueHD source?

Mine says Dolby TruHD when playing that codec w/ any movies that support it.

Did you setup the movie to use that codec? I don't have it yet, so I don't know if that is the default codec, but it might not be.

I think I narrowed my problem down to a flaky Pioneer remote. I programmed my MX-700 remote last night using the URC database and when the pioneer remote wouldn't work I tried the MX-700 and it worked fine. Hopefully I can get Pioneer to replace it without having to send back the receiver. The remote will only be used for a backup because all my equipment is controlled by the MX-700.

Thanks to all who responded to my posts.

Thank you! So simple, I had to go into the BD menu & select TrueHD. Now the display says DolbyTrueHD.

Is anybody using VSX-1018AH-K with ATI 4850 card ? If so, I would like to know if there is a way to force handshake between the two after switching the source ?

Following is the issue that I'm having and I've already posted it on 4850 thread

I rolled back the ATI drivers and that seem to have fixed the crashing problem. After doing the roll back I disabled the "ATI external event" service which took care of HDMI audio showing "unplugged" but unfortunately my troubles are far from over. When switching sources on my receiver ( Pioneer VSX-1018AH-K)..computer forgets that it is connected to a receiver and my receiver starts showing "Stereo" instead of "PCM" and therefore I get no audio and even power cycling the receiver does not work. The only way to fix it is to restart the computer.

Upon further investigation I found that when audio is working ATI Catalyst shows the receiver as HDMI device and when there is no audio, it shows up with correct name and everything except....it shows up as DVI device.

I'm not in front of my system right now, so this is from memory, but I do remember some confusion setting up the inputs properly.

Try this -- choose one of the named inputs (i.e. DVD, TV SAT), not the HDMI 1 or HDMI 2 input in the menu. Then within the menu for that named input, go to HDMI input and choose input 1 or input 2 depending on which HDMI input you're using. At that point it either automatically changes the digitial input attribute to HDMI or you you can choose that, I just don't remember exactly. Take a look at pg. 66 in the manual. I know it doesn't seem logical that you could specify HDMI attributes under the named inputs but not under HDMI 1 or HDMI 2, but that seemed to be the case.

You could wait til June-July for the 1019 but why stop there? Just a year and a half and you can get the 1020!

Every year, whether it be cars or electronics, they pack in more features for the same price or less. You have to decide what you need and how much you're willing to pay for it. Then be at peace with your decision. Plus as others have said the 1019 may have inferior amps.

Personally I try to wait til the middle or end of a product's life cycle so that I can get a good deal on it. That is why I didn't buy something last summer, I couldn't justify paying $500-600 for the features I wanted. I paid $417 or something for it a couple weeks ago. If I was really frugal I'd wait til April or so and the 1018 will be even cheaper.

Had the same problem, did what you did, but my display still says "PCM" Have a Sony 350BD Player. And Dark Night BR DVD.

This is really driving me nuts now!

Wonder why?

Does the BDP-S350 allow you to do bitstream over HDMI? That's the only way you'll get the pretty HD audio lights to light up on any receiver. If you use PCM it will just say PCM but you're getting the same sound as long as your Blu-ray player is setup to pass the HD audio over PCM and the Blu-ray movie is setup to play the HD audio format. This is the case (PCM only) with the PS3.

Good question, any 350 owners out there that could enlighten me?

Thanks for the response.

I believe it will bitstream TrueHD but not DTS HD. You'll need to change something in the settings to bitstream.

I have a Sammy 1500 but know someboby who has a 350. Go to the Audio Setting and choose Bitstream. Then when you insert the disc before playing, go to disc menu-audio-choose DDTrue HD. The 350 bitstreams both DD True HD and DTS HD MA.

The s350 will Bitstream both HD audio formats whether it be 5.1 or 7.1

Under the audio menu set: 'Audio Output Priority' to 'HDMI'
set: 'BD Audio Setting' to 'Direct' (that's your Bitstream Out setting)

Even Pioneers early specs are not correct this is what the 1018 is really putting out.

Note: Across all frequencies (20 Hz- 20 Khz), the latest published specs indicate that the 1018 has a continuous power output capability of 110 watts per channel at 8 ohms, with a .09% THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) via its seven internal power amplifiers.

So I would guess the 1019 is probably doing 85/95 watts per channel if it's listed as 120 watts through Pioneer. Of course that may change down the road, waiting for my 1018 to arrive today.

You'll be able to find them in April. They're still manufacturing them. They've just had a run on them lately so a couple stores with the best prices are out of stock. Heck you can still find the 1017 out there easily.

I already have my 1018 so I won't have to worry about it either way.
Agree this is the time to buy the 1018. The price drop has come but wait any longer and it will get tougher to get one. Bought my Pio 5070PDP a couple years ago in the spring and got the price cut. Sure I'd have 1080p if I'd waited but I've been able to enjoy my plasma for the last two years.

I can't get into the quick upgrade battle because I focus on another element of my HT the next year. This year is AVR and speakers.

There is no bitstream setting!

If your referring to the s350, then check this earlier post above.

Yep, that did it!

Don't know why they hide the "bitstream" (call it "direct")

Thanks for your help!!!!!!

Might have been too simple for Sony to do!

Well, that is good news. I really thought that model would only bitstream TrueHD.

Hi and happy new year everyone

Bought the Pio 1018 online (BB Canada) during Christmas.
The HDMI Monoprice cables arrived this morning and I am ready for setup this weekend.

My situation may be a little unique. I am building my Home Theater slowly
Last spring I bought a Pio 5080 plasma floor model at BB. This fall I bought the Sony PS3. Now I have the AV and I plan to buy 5.1 speaker set this spring. Until then I will be using my old stereo speakers which are B&W DM602

Question. Any known issues or problems connecting only 2 speakers to begin with and at later time upgrade to 5.1 and use my trusted B&W's for second zone?
This is my very first AV receiver. Is it complicated to setup?

Best regards,
H.

I am using this with my htpc. I have the toslink from the sound card going to Optical 1 on the receiver. I have the DVI/HDMI cable going from the video card to the BD on the receiver, and the HDMI out on the receiver to the TV. I can see the pictures but not getting any sound. I have turn HDMI control off and try to go to HDMI to assign optical 1 for the sound but it's not working. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Just run the MCACC setup and it should detect that you only have 2 speakers. When you get the 5.1 setup, run MCACC again and it should detect the new speaker setup.

All AV receivers are a little complicated. If you have questions check the manual and then post here.

You should go to BD and set optical 1 for the sound. If that is not possible then move the cable to HDMI1 and then assign Optical 1 to HDMI1.

Sorry if this isn't 100% clear, I'm at work and not in front of my 1018.

This thread is a great example of just how complex AV setup has gotten. Even though it's in a way easier with HDMI carrying video and audio, in a way it's gotten harder for many to understand.

The people who come to this forum are probably top 10% of electronics fanatics, yet even here we get many daily postings of people who can't get HD audio to work, can't get any audio at all via HDMI, etc.

Can you imagine the average person trying to get a receiver setup, TV, and a blu-ray player all correctly so he's getting 1080p video, and HD audio all playing correctly, with the speakers all setup right? Lol, it just ain't going to happen.

My wife literally gets overloaded just hearing the 5% about it I mutter as I'm playing with it.

That's why my wife's aunt calls me to come connect her onkyo receiver that she's had for 4-5 years but never got to work. Then I get periodic calls that she can't get the picture to show up or doesn't remember how to watch a dvd. My in-laws have a yamaha 5.1 setup but listen to the sound out of their tv speakers. Lord knows if they know how to work their dvd player. And don't forget about my brother in law who still has a 15 year old yamaha dolby prologic but will soon be inheriting my 4 year old yamaha 5.1 system. Only problem is, I'll have to hook it up and show him how it works.

Thanks for replying.

I followed your instruction earlier and here is what I have. Under the input setup, I select DVD, under that is Digital In & HDMI input & Component In. I selected "input 1" for HDMI input. When I go to BD or HDMI 2, I can't edit anything, it will only let you rename or set the PDP.

Under DVD, I have tried putting "optical" for Digital In, "input 1" for HDMI. I can hear the sound if I select DVD on the receiver but I don't get any pictures. I can select BD and get picture but not any sound. What do you think I am not doing right?

EDIT: I forgot to add that I did get picture and sound together doing what I did but the sound would cut in and out then I get nothing, I noticed on the receiver I got the HDCP error msg. Any suggestions?
