That's great and I hope they're successful in doing so but....I can only imagine the pricetag on such a beast. Call me pessimistic or backward thinking (I prefer "realist") but...I don't get excited about exotic technologies until they get mainstream and affordable enough that I can realistically go down to my local electronics store and buy one without taking out a loan or winning the lottery. I was aware of plasma tv's back in 97-98 but didn't really pay much attention until they started getting affordable around 04-05.

edit- is 892 euros around $1300 USD? I don't think that's realistic considering the developmental costs that will have to be recouped..

Apparently Panasonic is projecting to sell them for $1390 in the year 2011 according to Gizmodo, but by then a larger plasma will probably be selling for half that amount

I'll pay attention when we get 50inch around 3,500 and 60inch around 4,500-5,000.

three years is not good enough. by then, plasma will have eclispsed or surpassed what oled is set out to do. and at a much cheaper price. so whats the point. seems the tech is taking way too long to advance. all we see is prototypes set for years from now. its a lost cause and i really feel this tech shouldnt have been let out of the bag this early.

I'll grab me a 65 inch 1080p Pansasonic for less than that price when the new OLED sets come out.

Okay, but since high def is all about screen size, won't we be seeing very large panels with double high def resolutions before we see this 37" set? The technology is interesting, and look forward to seeing it implemented now that SED is dead, but what's so important about an announcement of a relatively small screen size coming aboard in three years?

Which, imo, is a joke to just release it in those smaller sizes. I mean, I can already see some 100+ in. OLED panels being made by around 2014, anyway, it's bound to happen. Right now, tho, I'd say that it'd pretty much level off around 40 - 42" by around 2010/2011, in my projection. Where things go from there is unknown at this point.

You have to keep in mind that OLED is still relatively early in development and larger screen sizes are proving to be a challenge. For comparison, Plasma technology dates back to the late 60's, but what they were able to produce back then doesn't really compare to what we have today...and 125"/1mm thick plasma screens probably seemed like science fiction back then. (and still does in some ways )

If you want to read more about the technology, here are two companies in the business of developing OLED:

Wake me up when the time comes that I can walk into my local Electronics retailer and walk out with a full featured 50" OLED for around $2500.
