Matte Finish LCD's

What are some of the better LCD panels that have a matte finish?

I really like the sammy 650 but the glossy finish will not work in my living room. I was thinking of the sony 52xbr5 but it is a little expensive and I am a little worried with the smearing issues with the xbr4.

Any thoughts?

Seems to be pretty hard to come by. I am looking for one myself in a 42", but everything today seems to be piano black.

I think he's talking about the screen being matte, not the surrounding bezel, correct? If so, I was pretty much set to buy the Samsung LN52A550 which has a matte screen. I was very pleased with the PQ, but I actually decided to go with the LN46A650, which has the glossy screen because I actually found it on Amazon for just about the same price and I wanted the 120Hz. So check out the 5-series Samsungs and see what you think about those. If you don't need the 120Hz or the AMP, go check them out. I think you'll be pleased and will save a lot of money over the Sony XBRs.

Correct, I am talking about the screen being matte. Thanks for the info on the sammy 5 series. Do you know of any with a matte screen and 120 hz?

What kind of TV will you be replacing? If you are replacing a old CRT style TV with a glass screen, I'd venture to say that you'll get less glare with the Sammy then you had with your glass screen TV. That would be especially true if your old TV's screen wasn't flat but had a curve to it that let you see more reflections.

I am replacing a 32" CRT that does have a curved screen. You think that the glossy screen will be less reflective that a CRT's?

The 550 Series does not have a matte screen. It has a semi-matte or semi-gloss screen which ever way you want to look at it. I have a 40A550 and I can see slight reflections at times and the screen does have a gloss but not like the 650 series.

yup

i had the same issue, not only with the screen, but w/ the bezel. i really - really - prefer matte everything.

that said, i have an LN52A750 on its way and am crossing my fingers it's not as bad as i fear, and therefore something i can get used to.

it's replacing a 32" sony CRT, flat screen, and my concern is even if it's a bit less reflective, the real estate is so much larger that it'll be an eye magnet. so, i have no opinion yet, only am sympathetic with your concern!

The W4100 is available in a 52" now, very nice set I must say so myself. Someone chose it over the A650 in our store today just because the blacks seemed great without the glossy screen.

Let us know how the 750 works out!! I am curious to find out if you have any reflection issues.

What are the major differences between the W4100 and the A650?
In terms of features and benefits not much, the W4100 has lower contrast but in terms of blacks I think they look more natural on the Sony. The Samsung seems to over accent certain colors while the Sony is very good all around. Many people say the sound is better on the A650 which it will have it's perks but for the most part TV sound quality is not a huge factor as it is discrete in difference. There is no swivel base on the Sony and it has a few silver accents. As for any in depth differences, I would suggest looking into the Owner's threads and reading all the small ins and outs people have seen from them. After really getting to play with them.

The current LG lines have matte screens. I've had the 37LG50 for about two months now and have been really pleased with it. It is in a room that has three sets of windows and an 8' slider so a matte screen was a must for me.

Any major issues with the LG?

Sound is not an issue as I will have a separate sound system for my home theater. I'll have to do some reading in those threads.

None that I have encountered. Some (well theBeginning mainly) will tell you that the LGs have poor black levels and off-angle viewing. I, personally, have no issues with either. I find the off-angle viewing fine and black levels, while not as good as my CRT RPTV in my home theater (of course that has a glossy screen and is essentially useless during the day), are better than I was expecting. If you can, go take a look at them in a store. I know BB carries the LGs, Sonys, Samsungs, etc. so you'll be able to see them essentially side-by-side.

Speaking of theBeginning and Samsungs, you can expect him here any minute now singing the praises of Samsungs and how the LGs and every other TV made are not worthy to even be sold alongside them...

I would go for the 6 Series Samsung. If you had a tube television the glossy screen on the Samsung shouldn't be any worse, and the picture quality is great, I'd pick it over the XBR4. Off axis blacks are deeper with the gloss screen too.

The Toshiba xf550 or xv540 sound pretty good if you read the threads on them. Matte screen and supposedly same panel as Samsung. I'm also like the 650 and want 120hz but not the glossly screen and the Sony's have the sparkling light show. I've been looking around to see the Toshiba's but haven't found a store nearby that has them. They all carry the 530s.

I'll have to go and check out the LG's at Best Buy. thanks for the info!

Let me know if you find a place that has the Toshiba and what you think of them.

Sorry that it's difficult for you to see Toshiba XV540 or XF550 in person. I bought the 52XF550 last month and have been very happy with its semi-matte screen in our bright family room. The bezel on the the Toshiba is shiny, but it's very narrow and I barely notice it. I am watching much more TV in the day time now than I ever used to with my CRT it replaced. Really looking forward to the Olympics this year!

I am in the same overall boat - looking at a 52 and leaning toward either the A650 or the W4100. I looked at both side-by-side and preferred the Samsung, my wife preferred the Sony. The key factor is likely the screen - the tv will be mounted above the fireplace in a room with many windows and on overhead light fixture. Glare = bad. So likely Sony.
Check out the Samsung LN-T4669 because it has a matte screen and is 120Hz as well. There's an active discussion thread on its line in this subforum that's worth a look.

That's too bad, the Sammy is the superior set because of the gloss screen. The Sony is nice but they don't stand out amongst all the other OED's with matte screens. The 650/750 series have taken LCD's to the next level. There are many ways to defuse natural light.....i would seriously consider this option.

I was talking to the wife about adding some drapes to cover some of the window. She is still on the fence about it, hopefully she will go for it.
Well you could tell her it can serve a duel role as she can use it as a 52" mirror that she can use to put on her makeup
post #29 of 39
Actually, I don't think that the glossy screen is that much of an issue for me. Since I hardly have any direct lighting on the screen (for the exception of nighttime lighting, but that's minor), and I'd definitely believe that Samsung had that gloss there for a reason, to enhance the PQ to the upteenth degree. Without the gloss, the picture just wouldn't crisp up as much, imo. I mean, glossy LCDs are nothing new, they've done this with PC monitors and laptop screens for the better part of the last couple of years, and now just making its way to HDTVs.

Better tell her to get all the lamps out of the room as well....and the adjacent rooms.
