MGS4's Native Resolution and Sound ?

Thread Starter
Hello all,

Can someone please tell me:

1- What's the native resolution of MGS4 ? (640p, 720p, 1080p..etc).

2- How many individual surround channels does it actually have? (5.1, 6.1 or 7.1)

Any help would be really appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the game is 5.1 and 720p.

And wikipedia confirms the 720p

My box says 1080p, and I could've sworn that's what the TV output said, too... will have to look again.

Definitely says support of 1080p but I thought native was 720p. I could definitely be wrong though

Really really big picture.

Which case is that? Mine looks totally different...
Hey! I want that case too!
The native resolution of the game is 1024.x768 that gets scaled to the full range of HD resolutions (720p-1080p). It scales very well and looks great at 1080p (the HUD is very clear)...

As for sound, I believe its a DD 5.1 mix. Also, on a good system, the sound eclipses the graphics easily. Amazing soundtrack, voice acting and sound effects...

Yeah, not sure.

Also, required hard drive space "At least 40 MB"

All I can say to that is:

HAHAHAH

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

HAHAH

HAHAHAHAHA

That's funny.

Yeah, they need to tack a few 0's onto that.

Thanks for replying all,

I'm pretty sure the picture posted is an old photoshopped MGS4 cover, I know of 4 official covers (MGS4 NTSC, PAL, NTSC-J & Limited Edition). and none of them look like that.

Thanks, but how sure are you ? Because I find it a bit weird that MGS4's native resolution is in 4:3 fromat and not 16:9

Can someone please confirm & clear things up about the resolution and sound of MGS4 (links to sources would be great).

I'm still confused on this one too...how is this game's native rez 1024x768, a 4:3 resolution......or is it simply cropped to 1024x720 for 16:9 display....or rather, scaled.

Why does it matter?

The game looks gorgeous regardless of what resolution its running at. Whatever behind the scene techniques Kojima Productions used worked really well.

resolution doesn't necessarily directly translate to the aspect ratio. Virtua Fighter 5 on both 360 and PS3 is rendered at 1024x1024. doesn't matter to me anyway... this is one of the best looking games out there.

i guess you could say its closer to 720p, but some have said that it looks slightly better at 1080i/p.

WTF? Its 1080p runs at my screen! It is a 1080p game just like TheDarnkess, GT5.

Because its the topic of the post.

And I'm curious.

And it does look incredible, we aren't debating that.

Judging by the screenshots the camera takes, 768 sounds about right.
There are guys on the Beyond3d forums that take raw screens captured via software directly as it is output by the PS3 and then count the pixels in the raw screenshot.

The poster most associated with releasing the raw resolutions of games is Quaz51. He is the member that broke Halo 3's native resolution being 640p.

GW Smokey, the game is then scaled from the raw output to a resolution that is supported by the TV (either 720p or 1080i/p). The game itself isn't natively output at 1080p, but rather, it is scaled up to fit your screen. Couldn't tell the difference, could ya'? :P

That is why I made the comment about why this all matters. It doesn't. Games in the previous generation of consoles barely ran at 480i in some cases, but we were non the wiser and judged games on other criteria. If you would like to discuss the technical engineering behind the hardware/software, etc, then you should probably head over to Beyond3d, as most of the members there are hardcore programmers/engineers that are far more qualified to answer questions about this stuff than I am.

There is absolutely nothing on that page about Metal Gear Solid that I can see. It does show that Ninja Gaiden 2 only runs at 585p, though, and it still looks pretty amazing (even if everyone does look like they are made of plastic).

I am a member of Beyond3d. The count and pages will be different if you are not a member just like here on AVS. Qauz51 who is usually the one to confirm resolutions confirms his findings in post 226. Read a few post before it for the request from members waiting for his answer about the resolution. That thread has other post on other game resolutions that Qauz51 has verified like you saw with NG2 and Halo3 and GTAIV PS3.

This is his post.

1024x768 confirmed of course and temporal AAx2 (i think they use intelligent temporal AA , they disable temporal AA when there are camera movement or quickly player movement for avoid remanence effect)
30fps but some moment at 60fps

Cool. Thanks. I ended up on page 4, so even though I went a few pages after the link, I still didn't see anything. And, I wasn't aware that AVS had a built in Confuse-a-Cat linking system, too...

I just played MGS4 for a couple of hours on my 50" 1080p DLP, and it looked stunning. I'm just now finally getting a chance to play this game even though I bought it the day it came out (stupid vacation ).

Thanks a lot for replying guys,

So the native video resolution is confirmed at 1024x768, what about audio confirmation whether the game's 5.1 or 7.1 ?

I am currently in Act 4. Haven't played in a week. I am back to work from vacation and have yet to take a vacation from my GF (which will never happen) I am starting back up hopefully later today. 60 and 70" Sony XBR here. Yes it does look good in 1080p.

Did you start from Post 226 and then go a few post back from that?

Oh yeah everybody. WANTED was off the chain. Next weekend Hancock.
Isn't Act 4 amazing? It tugs at the heart strings a little bit too...

I'm on a 42" Panny Plasma (700U) and some parts of the game are jaw dropping. Especially some of the transitions (or lack there of) between scene and gameplay.
Yeah if this is 1080p it's really weak. I'd say 720p seems about right. There is definitely something lacking when compared to 1080p material....or even some 1080i converted to 1080p.

Looked great in any case, but makes me wonder if they will ever be able to get most games running at 1080p smoothly in this generation....
1024x768 is still considered a 720p resolution, since it has at least 720+ vertical pixels.

1366x768 screens are all 720p. Either way the game is 720p, 1024x768 Not true 720p. Either way the game scales it to 1080p.
I know this is a old thread but I have noticed that during the mission briefings I can see pixels like I can see that the game is scaled up to 1080p from 768 and I can see that on the face of the little girl cooking - I can see it on the clothes of some of the people

also for some reason the loading screens and everything other than actual game play is gray not black - like it was 16-235 not 0-255 colors or something - game play looks black as can me and I can read a all black screen, like if I go into a corner and look at the dark spot and I measure it with my Minlolta ML-100 I can read 0.003 FL and the loading screens if I zoom it in to remove the other bright parts so it is all black or gray really - it measures 0.025 fl way brighter than the 0.003 I had during game play and the 0.001 fl that my display is capable of doing (Pioneer Elite PRO-111FD)
