DTS has a new recommended 7.1 layout and the studios that do 7.1 mixing follow this pretty closely, and so does Widescreen Review:

Think of your room as a circle.

Center at 0 degrees

Left front at 30 degrees

Right front at 330 degrees

Left surround at 90 degrees

Right surround at 270 degrees

Left back at 150 degrees

Right back at 210 degrees

Subwoofer(s) placed at optimal room location(s) for best bass response

With an acoustically transparent screen, you can get closer than most to this layout. Obviously, depending on where your seats wind up being and what type of surround speakers you use (bipolar, dipolar, monopolar) you may not have your side surrounds exactly at 90 degrees and 270 degrees... this speaker layout can be modified somewhat depending on certain room and speaker requirements.

I know. I've been arguing with myself on the rear channel layout. I don't agree with the premis of the THX layout, which is basically a 6.1 layout that uses the surround channels and the rear channels to create a phantom rear sound stage. But I figured that they knew more about speaker layout than did I. THX does say that, while not optimal, it can be used with a layout like the one you've mentioned.

I will be framing out the rear wall today and I think that I may end up doing what you recommend since I don't think that DTS 7.1 will not work well with the close placement of rear channels.

This was a mistake on my part. I originally was going to double-drywall and green glue the rear wall in the location that I now have the screen wall and just have dead space behind it. I purchased the inwall LCR's with that in mind. I then realized that I would have much better sound isolation doing it the way I am now.

I haven't decided exactly what I need to do to work with what I have. I'm pretty sure, with the near-field effect design of the inwall speakers, that I will end up drywalling most of the screen wall and facing it with 2" of OC 703. I'll leave the top open so that I can add bass absorbers behind the false wall. However, I'd love to have an acoustician's opinion on that (Dennis, Ethan, anyone ).

Also spotted a clean out valve on the PVC drain that you will have to plan access for.

The soffits shown on the drawing are schematic rather than to scale. The limits of the utils are approximately 11" down from the ceiling and 24" from the original side wall.

I do plan on creating an access in the soffit for the CO.

Thanks!

Updated the theater drawing to have the soffits to scale and move the rear speaker locations. Also added a theater logo.

That was at Ru San's. Some people prefer a few other places, like Nikko, but we eat sushi all over and like Ru San's the best. We average 2-3 times a month there and always have good service and great sushi. Unfortunately, there are no real good places in Monroe.

Thanks. I will have to check that out some day. I usually get sushi at Hibachi type places since my wife still has to have something to eat. And you re right, Monroe doesn't have much, but we typically go to the Matthews area for most of our shopping/dining and will travel for a nice date night too.

That's funny- I work in Matthews but I haven't ever eaten dinner here and almost all of my wife's shopping is at Southpark.

Ru San's is on Park Road Extension, kind of near East Boulevard. It's worth the trip if you like a lot of variety in your sushi/sashimi.

I actually work just up the road in Mint Hill. Thanks again for the restaurant!

I finished most of the framing this weekend, including fabricating the back boxes for the inwall speakers. Details of the back boxes are here:

Framing will be finishing up soon and I'll be starting on electric and HVAC. Does anyone have any good references for HVAC design?

Thanks,

I've finished the wall framing and most of the soffit for the existing utilities. I've also started hanging hat track from RSIC-V clips for the ceiling.

Updated first post with a bunch of reference notes and links. I hope more people than just me will find them useful.

CJ

PS- The Dark Knight is being released today in theaters. I'm looking forward to seeing it in the local IMAX theater!

In case anyone doesn't know yet, AVS had a server crash this morning and they have to go to a backup from 8/1, so everything since then has been lost.

Does anyone get instant emails when this thread is updated and happen to have my responses for the past few weeks? I have the comments that people put in, but it doesn't email me when I respond to this thread.

Did anyone happen to copy down the links recently? I did make a copy of them recently, but that happened to be on 8/1 of all days!

Thanks in advance,
CJ

Thanks RPh, but I think those posts were from The Dark Knight thread rather than The Dark Knight Theater thread! I did, however, see The Dark Knight this weekend in the local IMAX. Pretty empressive, but it was almost too much to take it all in.

I finally had a few more hours to work on the theater this weekend and got the framing finished. I'm currently working on a synth photo (www.photosynth.com) of the framed room and, if all goes well, will post a link to it tonight. If you get a chance, take a look at the website, it's really cool technology.

Here's the photosynth of the framed room. You will have to install some software from the main website. Unfortunately, it only works in Windows, but what else would you expect from Microsoft?!

I started worrying about possible vibrations of the 2x4 studs against the concrete walls and the 2x2's where they contact the 2x6's, so I went to Lowe's and picked up several rolls of 3-1/2" wide (about 1/8" thick) foam. I spent most of Saturday stapeling them to the backs of the studs.

I also put up all of my electric boxes for the code-required outlets and for the 2 sconces and then drilled all of the holes so that I can pull wire this weekend.

Well, I may be changing thoughts on projectors. I originally had been thinking about the JVC RS-2 with a Panamorph lens; but, I am now considering the new Panasonic PT-AE3000 and use the zooming method. It sounds like a nice project, and, with the memory features, zooming should not be the hassle that it is now. This will save around $6k from the bottom line!
