Oppo Bluray Player

Thread Starter
Just wanted to post this for those of you who were holding out for an Oppo bluray. I had been starting to shop for a Bluray player and decided to email Oppo about what they were planning to offer in terms of Bluray. Here is their email response:

James,

We have not yet aligned ourselves to the Blu-Ray high definition video format. The primary reason for this is that we feel that the current hardware solutions are not mature enough to be implemented and released by OPPO Digital. Our operational motto is to "make a mature product better". The Blu-Ray specifications are continually in flux, and we can't afford to create a solution which will become obsolete within a year.

We are vigorously investigating all current and future hardware solutions, however we do not know when we will commit to them.

This is disappointing. Other information says the the 983 is the last upconverting player they will release. I like my current OPPO player - for both PQ, audio CD Q and region free DVD - and would probably have bought a blu-ray player if they had brought one out this year. I assume their definition of "mature" is that they are waiting until they can release a player that will not need firmware upgrades every few months. I guess I can wait another year, given the current list of blu-ray titles. On the otherhand, I hope they are not implying that they will by-pass blu-ray and wait for a better technology.

If this is, indeed, the last upconverting DVD Oppo will make...then logic would
dictate that they would either be going out of business or making a different genre of player...And logic says that would be a Blu-Ray..
