having a problem getting the velodyne vrp-1200 to work with my onkyo 805.

I am having a problem getting the velodyne vrp-1200 to work with my onkyo 805. I connected the y splitter to the 1200, ran it to sub out on my onkyo. unable to set speakers to small. has anyone successfully set up a veoldyne vrp-1200 to an onkyo 805. if so please give me step by step instructions.

Do you have the subwoofer set to 'on' or 'yes' in your receiver? You may not be able to change the speaker settings until you enable the sub. FYI a Y splitter isn't a necessary thing, this sounds like a receiver configuration issue.

Yes sub is set to yes, sorry I fogot to mention that! I have gone through the configuration and have tried every thing. some guy at velodyne said I needed the y-splitter to get it to work. I also downloaded the update that tells me to use the y-splitter. I am trying to connect my onkyo 805 using tghe line level jack out to the velodyne speaker level inputs. it lights up, and makes a very low quite distorted sound.

Are you sure you're connecting your sub to the receiver via the 'sub out' or 'LFE out' on the receiver and not one of the other RCA pre outs? I assume you have a manual for both? You shouldn't need a y splitter to make the sub work; either input should be fine, though there's no harm in using a y splitter. Some subs will even have a single LFE input as well.

I believe you should be connected to the subwoofer pre out. I would check this first.

I assume you mean line level inputs on the sub and not speaker level inputs? The speaker level inputs will have connectors for speaker wire as opposed to a sub cable. If you're trying to connect a sub cable to speaker level inputs, I think I know what the problem is

Look on page 21 of the Onkyo manual. It shows how to connect the sub.

Velo is high on using a Y splitter, but it isn't needed. It won't hurt to use one and can help with the auto on function.
From the VRP1200 manual:
Inputs
Your new subwoofer is equipped with speaker-level and line-level inputs. Use the LINE LEVEL jacks when connecting your subwoofer to a pre-amp, signal processor (such as LFE out), linelevel crossover, or receiver with pre-amp level outputs. When using the line level jacks, some receivers may not provide enough signal to have the unit’s auto-on feature operate properly.
Additionally, this lack of signal may also cause the subwoofer to produce less output than it is capable of.
To alleviate this condition, we recommend the following steps:
1) If using line level jacks, BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT INPUT SHOULD ALWAYS BE USED
– never use just the left or just the right input. If the subwoofer’s input comes from the
LFE channel of your receiver, use the included “Y” splitter to divide the single input into
two inputs for the Left and Right subwoofer inputs. If using line level connections from
a preamp or signal processor, use both Left and Right inputs from your preprocessor or
preamp and connect them to the Left and Right inputs on your subwoofer.

And you should be using the Line Level inputs on the Velo, not the Speaker Level inputs.

new to this, it's not like a computer, plug and play. your right, I want to connect using the recievers subwoofer out jack to the subs line input jacks.

Once you get sound, go to page 45 of the Onkyo manual to set up the speakers. Then go to page 55 to run Audyssey. Now go to page 86 and set Subwoofer to Yes, all speaker channels to 80 Hz and the LPF of LFE to 80 Hz, Double Bass to Off.

On the sub, turn the volume (or gain) to around the 9:00 or 10:00 position. Turn the Low Pass Crossover all the way clockwise to 200. Have the Phase button out (0).

What are your speakers?

Yeah, its much more complicated. Sub into sub out jack on the AVR.

Yeah, make sure you're putting the rca in the sub out. I had it in the analog in side of the receiver. I just saw, "subwoofer" and plugged it in there and got really frustrated.

I did everything you suggested and it did not work. The sub is not subbing. No sound. I will be taking it back to circuit city today or tommorw. I plugged my sony sub in and it works every time even with the settings for the velodyne. Thanks for your help and advice.

Hmmm...sounds like you've definitely isolated it to an issue with the sub itself. Let us know what happens!

I took it back to circuit city and they tested it. the unit does not work. I knew it was not me. Wasted two days of my time, I know how to hook it up and how to configure it on my onkyo. I asked you guys how thinking maybe you knew something I did not. Anyway that was the last 12 inch velodyne in stock so I got a velodyne 10 inch. I am thinking about hooking up two of the 10 inch ones on my onkyo 805. I have no idea how to do that. Can someone tell me how? my viewing area is 3,000 cubic inches. I want to rock my house and the moonshiner down in the hollow. Should I start another thread?

Get a Y splitter for the AVR end (1 male/2 female) and connect a cable from each female on the Y to each sub's line level input. You can still use a Y adaptor (1 female/2 male) at the sub end on both subs.
