Strictly Ballroom (Import) - Strictly Horrible

ITV has released Baz Luhrman's camp masterpiece Strictly Ballroom in the UK. For those in Europe or those of the importation persuasion here in the States, this disc should be avoided like the Plague. Indeed. if there was proper reguation of such a thing, ITV should be required to remove this Blu-ray disc from store shelves.

When one purchases a Blu-ray disc, there is a reasonable expectation that one is getting a high definition presentation of the content. That is very obviously not the case with Strictly Ballroom. It is painfully obvious that ITV has upconverted a DVD master for Blu-ray and called it a day. In fact, this isn't even a very good DVD master. I have seen any number of DVDs look sharper and more detailed than this Blu-ray.

With people complaining about DNR ruining the HD releases of Patton and The Longest day and others, at least these discs are actual HD.

BTW, for anyone in the US that decides not to take my word for it, the Blu-ray is not region coded, but the supplements are in SD PAL format.

You've been warned.

EDIT:

Just for giggles, I pulled out my US NTSC DVD version from Miramax and I believe this Blu-ray is actually an upconverted PAL master. The Blu-ray is very slightly sharper than the US DVD but with more subdued color palette and weaker black level. There is also a a noticeable frame "jump" or "skip" every so often which I also believe is an artifact of converting a 25fps PAL master to 24P.

I have not seen this on TV. Is it playing now on one of the HD movie channels?

Have not seen it recently. A couple of different networks used to play it. HDNet, I recall used to play it as well. I never seen the DVD, but had the LaserDisc and I know I have a copy of D-VHS somewhere.

Eek. I didn't import this, but I imported the ITV releases of Bugsy Mallone, Great Expectations and Black Narcissus. I've seen comparisons on DVDbeaver for the latter two, and they look great, but I dunno about Bugsy Mallone. If Strictly Ballroom is that bad, then hopefully not Bugsy Mallone too...

I'm sure the quality of the various releases from ITV will vary based on available source material. I ordered Escape To Athena along with Strictly Ballroom and am pleased enough with that one. Looks considerably better than Strictly Ballroom.

Sorry to hear about this. One of my favourite titles. Guess I'll hold on to the DVD.

Agreed. The "Boys from Brazil" shots on dvdbeaver look fantastic as well. Come on Bugsy!!

I wouldn't be as harsh in criticising the PQ as Robert.

It is a bit soft, but IMO this is due to the original source material
and budget constraints rather than being an upconvert.
It could do with a complete re-master as there are ocassional specks of dirt etc. but I doubt that will happen.

It's certainly not demo material, but closeups are sharp and colours are well defined.

Overall, this is probably as good as we're going to get.
I don't regret the purchase.

I will admit my initial post was born out of extreme disappointment. I love this film and easily place it among my short list of "desert island" movies. I was very much looking forward to this Blu-ray release but as the opening sequence rolled, my heart sank. It isn't the money wasted on the disc, but the wasted opportunity to properly present this wonderful little film.

As it happens, we just finished watching this disc completely, and while I might be inclined to soften my criticism somewhat, I stand by my assessment that this is a converted PAL video master. There is simply not enough detail, even in the sharpest, clearest, best lit shots to consider this "true" HD video. With any luck, this is on Disney's list for not too far away and we will get something better than this.

I received Escape to Athena and going into my Marantz VP-15S1 it is a giant leap above the PAL DVD SE version. Quite happy with it.

Sad this, I just introduced my youngster to the delights of Strictly Ballroom this past week and was thinking how I would like to replace my forlorn SD version with a new Hi Def transfer, Unfortunate really.

My wife and I just finished watching Bugsy Malone. The picture quality is a mixed bag. First of all: This movie has never been a polished high quality one. Black level, contrast and colors are perfectly fine for what it is. Many people will probably be dissapointed by the sharpness. It was filmed with a soft focus and glow - vaseline on the lens or something. So it never is razor sharp. Nonetheless it's reasonable and clearly better than any DVD. What is distracting from time to time is a inconsistent amount of DNR or something similar. Some better lit scenes seem to be more or less intact with natural grain but in others it looks a bit strange. They tryed to keep the noise level constant I assume and therefore the variable use of the tool.
Some comments to the sound: The options are DD 2.0 (mono) and DD 5.1. The upmix (not a remix) is certainly nothing for purists and has some problems. After a while we switched to mono and were perfectly happy with it. The fact that we don't get any lossless track or at least DD+/DTS HD is of no concern to me since the fidelity of the sound is very limited.

In the end I can recommend it for fans of the movie. It's far away of being demo material but the possibilities of a better transfer are slim. We had great fun watching it.

Notes: Watched with a Sanyo Z2000 and a 30° viewing angle to the screen.
