TV tuner question

I bought a TV tuner that I was going to add to my media server to record TV. I am also adding a new HTPC in one of the bedrooms.

My question is will I be able to view tv channels and schedule recordings from the bedroom PC if the tuner card is installed in the server? Do I have to put the tuner card in the bedroom PC?

No, not live TV (unless you use some third party software to stream live tv to the other pc but it can get a bit cumbersome especially when wanting to change channels and such). You can however watch the recordings with any htpc and using front ends like VMC makes it very easy.

Depends on what front end you are using for your htpc. You can definitely do this if you use SageTV. You can setup and run Sage Server on your media server machine and install Sage client in your bedroom htpc.

I have mine configured the same way and it works flawlessly. My media server has 4 tuners including 2 HD-PVR's and I am able to view/change channels, schedule/edit recordings from my bedroom or game room for all 4 of my tuners.

I was planning to use VMC. I might have to try out Sage though.

If I put the tunner card in the bedroom PC are there any issues recording to a network drive? The bedroom pc will just have a small OS drive in it.

VMC will not allow you to store recordings on a network drive by default but I believe there are some hacks to get around it.

I am using MediaPortal to do this. The client plays tv well and the server will record/timeshift to the network drive.

Again, the answer is YES with SageTV.

This means that you can't record to a network drive in sage either?

You can record wherever you want with SageTV.
