Denon DVD-A1UD/DVD-A1UDCI Blu-Ray/DVD/SACD/DVD-A/ Universal Player - Page 116

When using a DVD-A1UD with my AVP-A1, does the Advanced AL32 in the UDP get over written or downsampled by the AVP Advanced AL24 since as said here it is always on.
Didn't Denon match the AVP-A1HD 24bit with the DVD-A1UD 32bit? They were being sold at the same time on Denon USA site as their flagship/reference products.

Denon wouldn't downsample to 24bit would they?

I have a Marantz UD9004 and a AVP-A1HDCI. No body talks on the UD9004 forum so I ask here. Want to play SACD multi and 2ch with the best audio possible with a minimum of menu changes on both UD & AVP.

Connected XLR outs to AVP, selected CD and selected XLR. Have HDMI1 out to DVD on AVP.

Never been able to play SACD till now. I'm a virgin.

Review I read said "To wrestle full control over the UD9004’s multichannel analogue outputs you’ll need to go to HDMI Setup >Audio Setup and set this to ‘Mute’ before returning to the top Audio Setup menu where the (analogue) 7.1 channel level and distance options then become available. To enable the speaker configuration options (speaker size and crossover frequency) the Source Direct mode needs to be switched from ‘On:50kHz/100kHz’ to ‘Off’. Only now may you fully configure the UD9004 as a standalone source offering 7.1 channels of analogue sound from its RCA/XLR connections and 1080p/60Hz/24Hz digital video over HDMI."

This works but changes all the settings so I can't play blu ray, no video at all. Plus can't see menus, most DVD-A or SACD have a menu to select sound format options. Have to select menu option from DVD input where video is available then switch to CD input on AVP to get the sound.

I must be way off. I can't believe this is how it's expected to do this. Also some of my disks are live concerts, I want best audio with video also playing. Is this even possible?

Can I use HDMI2 for video only to CD input on AVP and XLR for audio. Is that what I'm missing?

Never mind answered in AVP forum.

Any news for a firmware update? I've audio stuttering on the Dolby TrueHD track on Total Recall (2012). Audio stutter on Oppo, too. I hope a firmware upgrade will solve this and fix the mess opf the previous update. Denon are you here? Still alive?

My machine wont even play that disk in question. My disc was a rented disk and that could be the issue as they usually have a sticker(company logo) on the disc as i thought that might be the problem. I still havnt purchased the movie yet as it might play better on a purchased disc.I have contacted my retailer and they still havnt got back to me as they were going to have a word to Denon here in Australia. I will be checking for an update later today. If i find of anything i will let you know. In all due respect to denon crap like this should not be happening as its very confusing for a purchaser of an expensive machine not knowing where the problem lays and we should not have to rely on firmware updates to have to justify to ourselves the money spent just to play a disk Somethings not right it has left a bad taste in my mouth.

The blame for the bulk of the firmware updates goes to the movie studios, not the player manufacturers. There's actually a recall out on the new Total Recall (a bit ironic biggrin.gif) due to the authoring blunder they made on that one - this particular movie has been having issues playing properly on just about every player out there, including the Sony PS3. If the studios would stop trying new authoring tricks, there wouldn't be a need for firmware updates other than to address a bug here or there.

Thats understandable , and i hope you are right smile.gif, as my ps3 played the movie fine mind you i didnt think much of the movie anyway, but still its the first time i have ever had problems with this sort of thing.I tried a firmware update and i seem to have the latest. Its the first time i have heard of a movie recall, so they didnt call the movie Total recal for nothing then.biggrin.gif Just a little joke...

I've read about Sony taking back TR discs if you contact them. But what do they send you? I'm guessing it's just another TR disc they have laying around. I highly doubt they went back and reauthorized the BD.

Is your PS3 a Slim or "fat" model? If it's the older "fat" model, it would probably be fine because it can't output bitstream HD audio. Setting your Denon player to output LPCM instead of Bitstream would most likely allow the movie to play without any issues - that's the workaround.

There have definitely been other recalls for batches of bad pressings and/or authoring issues.

My understanding is that they have a fixed version available, but I haven't seen any reports of anyone who has received a replacement yet. I've also heard that they're happy with the workaround of using LPCM output, so who knows... I just wish the studios would stop trying new tricks just for the sake of trying new tricks - it creates a headache for everyone when problems like this crop up.

It is a slim model, i also have the 60gig fat model but the player in it dont work. I should rehire it out and try it on LPCM and see what happens.Come to think of it i might ask Dave up at the video shop if people have been complaining of it not playing in there machines. Silly me, never thought about that.

I rehired the movie  and lpcm didnt make any difference. I tried using lpcm and bitstream on the player itself and even turned d link on and off but it still dont play.It wont even bring up the menu so i cant select anything at all under the movie menu.confused.gifMost people seem to have an audio problem but mine is that it just wont read the menu and display it. This is the first for me. In all my years in home theatre this is the first time this has ever happened. The player itself reads every other disc fine just not total recall, plus it wont read the special features disc either. This is definately a strange one. It seems the whole Total Recall disc package(both discs movie and special features) wont play.At least the player seems fine thats the main thing.smile.gif

Quick poll question: you're building a state of the art home theater, goal is very best Blu-ray audio and video performance. Do you choose Box A, a mint Denon DVD-A1UDCI or Box 2, an Oppo BDP-105.

The BDP-105, without a doubt. It has support for 3D, doesn't have the digital output constraints the Denon players have for SACD, has much better support from the manufacturer, and costs a lot less.

I vote for the Denon. Just considering Blu-ray performance only, zero interest in 3D. Also, SACD has nothing to do with Blu ray performance. I would feed DTS HD MA via the 5.1 analog outputs of the Denon, ultimate audio performance. Another reason, its beefy power supply.

I don't have the Oppo 105 but I do have the Denon A1UDCI and I can't say enough about how good the audio is from this player. I specifically like how 2-channel music sounds and to my ears sounded much better than a $1800.00 stand alone cd player I had. I am connected to a Classe SSP-800 prepro which has excellent dacs as well but still prefer the balanced analog outs and the Denon dacs. For m/c sacd I use the m/c analog outs avoiding any sacd constraints. Of course the A1 doesn't have 3D or smart apps and many other features that the Oppo BDP-105 has. I am guessing that as for video they are most likely comparable. Also I have had excellent support from Denon customer service.
Run the same poll in the Oppo BDP-105 and I suspect the results won't be split biggrin.gif. The problem, of course, is that most people haven't used both so the answers are going to tend to be recommendations for the one the poster happens to have experience with. I own a Denon DVD-3930CI, and have Oppo BDP-95 and Oppo BDP-105 beta samples. I've never used a Denon DVD-A1UDCI.

But the Oppo does have a beefy power supply, excellent analog outputs (including balanced outputs), and excellent video output. It also has customer service that's second to no other company I've ever dealt with. Send them an email on a holiday weekend and it's very likely that you'll get an answer in a few hours. Send Denon an email during normal business hours, and based on my experience you're lucky to get a response within a few days. I absolutely love my Denon AVP-A1HDCI and POA-A1HDCI combo, but I can't agree that Denon's customer service is excellent.

Just as an example, I recently purchased a 2nd POA that was supposed to be brand new / A-stock. The authorized dealer (the AVS store), got it from Denon's warehouse and shipped it to me. The warranty paperwork that came with it was for the refurbished warranty rather than the normal warranty, so I was suspicious that something wasn't right. The amp also arrived with damage (the handles on the back were bent). I contacted the dealer and also called Denon. The Denon rep had to look into it and took over a week to get back to me on the warranty status (is it really that difficult to check if something is a refurb or not???). In the meantime, I looked at the bottom of the amp and there was a clear "Refurb, warranty void if removed" sticker. When Denon finally called back, the rep told me it was not a refurb and had the normal warranty and also gave me some line that it had been sold to some other dealer. Um, right - their records probably showed the original sale, it came back with a problem of some sort, got fixed, and then put into the refurb section of the warehouse and never got the proper warranty status update in their system. The AVS store agreed to give me a full refund and that Denon would issue a UPS call tag to come get the amp from my house. It took Denon close to a month to get that sorted out and have UPS pick it up (it sat in my garage waiting all that time) - fortunately the AVS store gave me my money back pretty much right away.

I realize that every company screws up once in a while, but I've heard of a lot of people calling Denon for support and getting less than helpful answers.

When the next Bluray comes out that has issues playing on various players, I've got a LOT more confidence that Oppo will get an update out in a timely manner to solve the compatibility issue than Denon will.

The best advice IMHO, is to (if possible) get both players to try out and return the one you don't want to keep. Oppo has a 30 day no questions asked return period, so the buyer is only out the cost of shipping if they don't keep the player.

In retrospect I may have overstated Denon's customer support by saying it is excellent. You are right about them being slow getting back to you. My view was influenced by the fact that when I had to have my A1 repaired after it was out of warranty (bluray drive needed replacing along with one other part) they actually did the repair for just the cost of the labor. However it had to go back twice and it did take over a month to get it back and working correctly. Knock on wood, it hasn't given me any problems since. I may at some point get the Oppo 105 and probably keep both in my setup unless the Oppo turns out to be equal or better for audio and video to my ears and eyes.

Just finished watching the Prometheus bluray disc and at the 1 hour and 28 minute mark the picture froze up. I opened up the tray and reloaded it and after a rather long period of time with the player reading "Loading" the message "No Disc" appeared. I tried another bd disc "Ted" and again after an unusually long loading time, again the message "No Disc" appeared. Both of these disc's were rentals from Blockbuster. Finally I unplugged the A1 for a minute and replugged and the Prometheus bd disc played and actually gave me the option to start playing from where I left off. I also tried the "Ted" bd disc and it also played. Since I had my player in for repair not to long ago my first thoughts were, here we go again. Has anyone else experience a problem with the Prometheus bd disc? I am hoping that it was just this disc that produced this behavior and not the player going bad again. I also played a couple of cd's after that and they played fine. Keeping my fingers crossed that it was something in the Prometheus disc that caused it.
Yes I also had many issues with the Prometheus disc. Every 30 minutes I would get horrible pixeling across the screen. I had an issue with the Iron Man 2 disc last night where it literaly hung uo in the same place. Also for some time the third clock control light was also not coming on. I did a hard reboot like you did last night and the 3rd light came back on and the rest of the Iron Man disc played without issue. I think I may need a firmware update and hopefully that corrects some of the issues but not sure at this point. I brought up the Prometheus issue in this thread awhile back and someone replied and stated they had no problem with the disc. Do a search on Prometheus in this thread and you will find it. Good luck.

Thanks Bardo, I have played a couple of more bd discs since I did the reboot and no problems so maybe it was something in the Prometheus bd disc that triggered the problem. I am not sure if I am on the latest update? Is there away to know that by going into the menu or do I have to coonect my 100ft Ethernet cable to my router/modem to determine this? With my Classe SSP-800 prepro I can easily check the firmware version thru the menu.
Good question on the firmware updates. Others on this thread are probably much more knowledgeable than I on that. I am a vew owner of this unit having bought it pre-owned about 2 months ago. I would break out your 100ft ethernet cable to just do the firmware update although you should read through this thread as others say they have had issues with those updates.

You should really be happy with this player, at least based on the performance I am hearing and seeing when the player is working. The one negative for me was as I mentioned I had to send mine in for repair about 6 or so months ago to replace the bluray drive and they updated the player at that time so I can't be too far behind. I am always hesitant about doing firmware updates, unless I have some real issues. If I have to do an occasional reboot and it fixes the problem I can live with that. Even though the Classe SSP-800 prepro dacs are no slouch I still prefer the balanced analog route for all 2-channel music (CD, SACD and DVD-A). To me this is where this player excels. I go the HDMI route for all bluray and M/C DVD-A and SACD.
I still use the A1UDCI for SACD stereo and MCH playback.

None out there, except the clones from McIntosh (MVP891) and Marantz (UD9004)
offer the power of the 6 AKM DACs inside this beast. Oppos still use ONLY 2, yes two
DACs, one entire DAC for the 7.1 setup:)

I don't pick players by tech specs, but for the MCH SACD lover this is the ultimate player still,
I trust my ears on this one.

Latest firmware fubared BD badly, many BDs don't play, as they forgot to introduce the latest
DRM handshake flags, but who cares when I have a PS3.

This doesn't sound too good as far as doing a firmware update. The only bd disc issue I have had since I got my A1 back from repair was with "Prometheus" and apparently that disc has caused others problems as well. I just did a reboot and it fixed the problem. I do on occasion use the m/c analogs for m/c sacd's but it requires me having to change the level on my Rel sub. if I want the proper bass output.

Another issue with a Blockbuster bluray disc "Moonrise Kingdom" just like the "Prometheus bluray disc at about 40 minutes in the picture froze. Had to open the disc drawer and restart it and it did the same thing. The third time i got a "NO Disc" message. This is the same behavior I got with the Prometheus bluray disc also from Blockbuster. I am wondering since the Blockbuster disc's are different than the one's you would buy as it states they are for rental only, if this is what is causing my A1 not to play nice. I hate to think I am having another problem with the A1 after just getting it back from repair not too long ago. Anyone else having this experience?
ah freeze ups are the bain of the anti piracy argument..

I find you can illuminate most problems by burning a disc yourself and you usually ge better playback quality.. when you do...

I found some faults are thru the lack processing power and memory causes alot of issues with entry level bd players and some high end models..

I am using AVP-A1HD with the DVD-A1UD on DenonLink 4.

It's been a terribly long time I have not seen the clock lock LED light up no matter what settings I used....I believe it stops working after the last firmware update.

Anyone have any feedback, comments?
