Calling all XA2 experts, please help me figure out what kind of HD DVD player I have

I purchased a refurbished XA2 from bidtopia (read: Bargainland) in 3/08. It has played flawlessly since I got it. I was going to update it to Version 2.7 and that is when I noticed that mine is Version 2.0 (see screenshot). The thing is I didn't know there was a Version 2.0 for the XA2. I burned the 2.7 disk myself but the machine wouldn't update. I thought I burned a coaster so I tried to update to 2.8 with a factory Toshiba disc. It would get to step 2/5 then flash an error code and eject the disk. I called Toshiba and they sent me another 2.8 update disc thinking the first one was bad. Same problem as before. Then, Toshiba refused to exchange the XA2 for another refurb because bidtopia is not an approved seller/reseller. At a loss, I compared the setup menu between my bidtopia XA2 and my uBid XA2 that I had and noticed they were different. The outside, back, remote, box etc. are identical to my uBid XA2 but the setup menus are different. What gives? I then tried to update the bidtopia XA2 via the internet thinking that no matter what kind of HD DVD player I really had, it would update properly. No luck. It would get through all of the initial downloads and then flash the same error code on step 2 of 5. One question I have is do the setup menus change based on the version the player is on? I'm hoping someone on here has had a similar experience or can figure out what is going on. Thanks in advance for any insight.

3rd Gen? A30/A35?

How bout a pic of the actual player?

You got me. According to the firmware thread, the A1/D1, the XA1, the A3/D3, the A30, and the A35 all have a 2.0 verison. I figured when I updated it via the internet it would automatically update to the proper version of whatever drive it is.

Is it possible that someone swapped the insides from another player with what is supposed to be in the XA2 case?

Do you have an XA2 remote?

Can you access the Reon chip's Picture adjustment controls?

If you can then it is definitely some variant of an XA2.

Yes I have the XA2 remote and I have been able to adjust the Reon chip's picture adjustment controls. I am missing some of the picture setting options in setup menu though (last pic in the first post). I don't know if the picture options in the setup menu change with different version updates though.

Hacked firmware? Perhaps they just labeled it whatever they wanted, is that possible? Would that stop from continuing to update to further firmware?

It could definitely be hacked firmware. To those who have used the hex editor, what shows up as the version number? Does using the hex editor prevent further updates?

Hit Display,1,9,5,Display on the remote and see what you get.

That's exactly what happens.

Change the line that says 1080i to 1080p (assuming firmware 2.0 can do 1080p, I can't recall exactly where 24p came in) if your Display Device can do 1080p.

Upgrade the firmware to v2.7 and you'll get the best overall 24p support. You are running 2.0. Changing from 2.7 to 2.8 or 3.0 also adds another option under that video menu.

As far as the firmware info screen there, I can't recall what mine looks like exactly, but that looks very similiar to mine. After upgrading to 2.7 some of those numbers will change.

If the 2.7 and 2.8 updates will not apply, the unit might have a defect, or possibly it was originally at 2.7 or 2.8 and someone rolled the firmware back. You can do the same essentially by following the steps to downgrade it to 1.3 in the thread about adding PAL and Region free to the xa2. Just go thru the steps to get it down to 1.3, then try updating to 2.7 again.

Having come with 2.0 (2001) firmware it should have drive version T22T instead of T23M? Didn't T23M come with the 2.5 (2501)? I wonder if the drive version is causing the problem. I wonder if trying to rollback to 1.3/T22T and then forward will work? Anybody got a theory?

I didn't know that the XA2 ever came with 2.0 fw. Can you tell me what the numbers mean and what the difference between the drive verisions are? I might have to try to rollback to 1.3 fw as a last resort but I am not at all comfortable with the process. I'd rather have it play at 2.0 than brick it just to change the fw. Initially I thought someone switched out the drive but that might not be the case. Thanks for all of the help.

Can you check if it will bitstream? That feature wasn't added until 2.6 right? Might not matter but may help lock down what firmware it really is.

Thanks for the reply. I can't check if it will bitstream because its going straight into my plasma (no receiver upstairs). I should have posted before that the error code I am getting is 2007c5a0, which I have read on here means: "flash memory error VR NAND". It looks like my only option is to try and rollback to 1.3 fw and start over from there.

You might have a bad NAND Flash memory chip. Geez, if the player works at all -- I would be very hesitant to try further flashing.
