Yes... all the BB that have the Magnolia store inside are carrying the AVR-1909. I called all the BB in my town and all the Magnolia ones had atleast 2 units in stock. The non-magnolia stores dont carry Denon.
When calling BB give them the following SKU 8853895

Thanks to all for the quick responses. That's why I like these forums.

I did press display on the PS3 and you're correct. It did say "DTS-HD".

I paid the same price at my BB Magnolia store as stated in the above posts. They had 3 in stock as of yesterday.

I did a manual set up of my speakers yesterday and they sounded great. Today I'm going to attempt a "auto' setup. I guess if I don't like the auto setup I can always go back to my manual settings.

new question

would it be ok playing this baby on some 3ohm speakers, lol

My speakers will take 4/6/8 ohm receivers. Is there a way to know what this 1909 receiver is ? It's probably in the manual but I can't seem to find it. Or does it even matter? My speaker specs say "Impedance 4 ohm nominal"

I have 4ohm surrounds (6ohms on the fronts and center). I returned an Onkyo that couldn't handle the load. I'd had a 2802 Denon that did just fine with these speakers so I picked up the 1909. So far, so good. However, on page 11 of the manual it indicates that you should only drive 6ohm speakers or better. Nonetheless, the FAQ at the Denon site says:

Question: Can I use 4 ohm loudspeakers with my Denon receiver or power amplifier?

Answer: Yes, you certainly can.

To understand this a bit better, first realize that all amplifiers are designed to deliver a signal into an electrical "load" or resistance presented by the loudspeaker. We measure resistance in units called "ohms" (after the German physicist Georg Simon Ohm, 1787-1854).

Conventional wisdom makes an 8 ohm loudspeaker load the most acceptable because it "protects" the amplifier from delivering too much current. A 4 ohm loudspeaker can encourage a marginally designed amplifier to deliver more current than it comfortably can.

However, you should remember that a loudspeaker's impedance rating is a nominal or average one: A speaker rated at 8 ohms may actually vary from 5 (sometimes even less) to 20 ohms or higher, depending on the frequency at which you measure the impedance. (Don't worry about this too much -- good speaker engineers are well aware of these variations and take them into consideration when designing products.)

In general, you'll find that Denon products are designed to function with a wide variety of loudspeakers and have power supplies and output circuitry more than able to meet the current demands of low impedance loads.

In the rare event that very low impedances tax the amplifier, quick acting circuitry will protect it from damage. If unusual operating conditions trigger this circuitry, the word "PROTECTION" will appear on the unit's front panel. If this happens, simply turn the unit off, wait a moment or two, and turn the unit back on again. The protection circuitry will automatically reset. If it re-engages, check your system for possible malfunctions.

So, how many of you have been able to compare the Denon 1909 with the Pioneer 1018 side-by-side?

Unfortunately, the local best buy (the Towson, MD store #149) does not have EITHER one on display yet, nor do they have either one in stock. I went in yesterday afternoon, and they had a 1018 sitting unboxed, on a shelf behind the counter. They said they weren't even allowed to set it up for display until this Sunday because it wasn't in the plan-o-gram or whatever BB calls it. So, I'm kind of pissed off. No local store has either one set up yet or available for sale, and I really need to get a new receiver asap. My current receiver is a 7 year-old H/K AVR320 and it's on its last leg, the power supply seems to be dying. The lights on the front flicker whenever you turn the volume up high

They dont accept coupon for Denon or other high end stuff. All Magnolia audio products are excluded... I argued with the guy for a while but he wouldnt budge. I was also buying the new logitech Harmony One and he dropped the price on that one to $185 which I think is a pretty good deal (retail price is $249)

Here is a current 10%-12% BB coupon:

I believe that according to the fine print, they SHOULD accept this at BB/Magnolia for the Denon, as it is not excluded.

Well, after spending the past couple of months reading these forums I finally decided on the 1909... called BB the other day and was first told they didn't have any but I gave them my phone # and they said I'd get a call as soon as they arrived... and about 30 minutes later I got that call... paid the same price that has been stated above, brought it home and it was late so I just tried to set up 2 channel cause I wanted to hear SOMETHING... it's a new room so I had to cut new wire, hooked up some banana plugs etc... get all that done and go to plug in the receiver... and NOTHING. DEAD. No lights come on the front, nothing happens when I press the On/ Standby. Nothing. Tried other outlets...nothing. So I'm pretty bummed and have to make another trip to BB for an exchange... hopefully they have another in stock. Anybody else have this kind of problem before with their receiver? I'm guessing just a blown fuse or something...

BTW, I'm still not totally convinced on my receiver decision... here's my setup, let me know your opinions...thanks.

You've got things backwards, the speakers are the things with the ohm (resistance) rating, you can't have a "4 ohm receiver". There is no such thing. Amplifiers can be rated in their specs to be be stable down to a certain resistance rating of speakers (i.e. you can say an amp is "4 ohm stable" meaning it can drive that load without blowing itself up). But it's the SPEAKER which has the ohm rating. The question is "I have XXX receiver, will it take 4/6/8 ohm speakers?"

As explained above, speakers have a specific "resistance", as a simple analogy when the amp tries to shoot electrical current through it the speaker, the more resistance it encounters the harder the amplifier has to work (more current) to drive the speaker. That's why you see amps have higher "watts per channel" ratings when listed into 6ohms.

So your speakers are 4ohm speakers. A Denon 1909 should be able to drive them, but you run the risk of it getting hot and triggering the protection circuit. I would be a little cautious about driving a full surround setup of 4ohm speakers to loud volumes with this entry-level receiver, and definitely cautious for the 3ohm speakers the other poster asked about above.

They wont accept this coupon as it says Magnolia Home Theatre products. They include all high end audio such as Denon into that category. I argued with the sales guy and they wouldnt give me the discount. on the other hand someone else might get lucky.

Are 4 ohm speakers "louder" than 8 ohm speakers then?

Well I can see where he would get that, but it's a matter of punctuation. It does not exclude all Magnolia products, it excludes the specific ones listed after the colon:

Magnolia Home Theater products: Bose®, SpeakerCraft®, Vienna Acoustics, MartinLogan, BDI furniture, Magnolia® Guaranteed Performance Agreement and special order merchandise;

All of the other exclusions are followed by a semicolon, this list follows a colon.

You probably made the same argument, but the sales guy is just plain wrong. They should accept the coupon.

They pull more current from an amp, thus they are louder. They will make the amp work a little harder, but if the amp is stable to 4ohms it should be no problem. It can sound different. Not night and day different but I've heard identical speaker cabinets with either 4ohm or 8ohm speakers and presumably due to the amp working harder had a different tonal characteristic.

There's small master power button to the right of the larger power button. Make sure that's it pressed in to put the receiver into standby mode. Once you do that you should be able to power the beastie up.

Magnolia did accept my 10% coupon. Guess it varies from store to store.

A 4 ohm speaker presents less of a load on the amplifier, therefore allowing the amplifier to deliver more power than an 8 ohm load. Ohms law states that if you halve the impedance, power will double.
Assuming the amplifier can supply the additional current (most modern amplifiers can handle a 4 ohm load and have circuit protection to keep the amp from being damaged if the current draw becomes too much), and the sensitivity of the 8 ohm vs 4 ohm speakers is relatively close, then the amplifier can push more power to the 4 ohm speaker producing a higher sound pressure level than the 8 ohm speaker.
Don't be surprised if a cheap amplifier shuts down when being connected to a 4 ohm load and being pushed really hard.
It really depends on the amp and speakers though. If your amp can already power an 8 ohm speaker to the loudest listening levels you desire, then going to 4 ohms isn't going to buy you much other than a hotter amplifier.

They absolutely should accept that coupon, go to a different Best Buy if they wont.

Get the movers coupon from post office, it worked for me. The guy tried to tell me that magnolia is excluded, but if you read carefuly, it says magnolia products: and then list specific lines, denon is not on the excluded list. I told him to just scan it and much to his surprise it went through.

Thanks for the info. I guess I should have said "my speakers are compatiable with 4/6/8 ohm receivers". Why do you think they are 4 ohm?
Sorry if this is a redundant question.
man its going to be pain to unhook everything and take it back to the store. I am going to try another store and see if they will sell it to me with the coupon and then return the one I have back to the original store.
Hi,

Can anyone confirm how many TOTAL HD inputs (HDMI & Component) that the 1909 supports? I see that they have 3 of each, but that does not necessarily mean that it supports 6 HD inputs...

Thanks!

So how do you go about getting a current movers' coupon? I have tried modifying the URL from previous months and it didn't work.

All you have to do is bring the receipt in dude. And as said before, the movers coupons are at your local post office.

Anyone using a Harmony remote with the 1909? I have a Harmony One and when I tried to add the 1909 as a device, it's not in the database. Is there a simple work-around for this?

Print a coupon from this web site: http://printable-coupons.blogspot.co...y-coupons.html

It excludes certain Magnolia products, but not Denon.

I have a Hannspree 22"/HF229H Lcd Monitor. It worked without any problems when connected directly to the PS3 or the SA8300 via HDMI (it is HDCP compliant). When I go throught the 1909 I get a NO VIDEO SIGNAL msg.

Does anybody have an idea what's wrong?

Try using the 1908 or another Denon model listed in the database.
Just use the AVR-1908 in the harmony database and all the major functions worked. I think some audyssey related stuff might not be there but its something you only do once anyway.

I have the harmony 880 and just picked up the harmony one. The 880 worked great with AVR-1908 .. havent tried the harmony one yet... should be no different.

I'll try that and maybe even ask for a manager if they give me a hard time... lets see where it goes.
