It does everything - lossless codecs via bitstream and player decoding along with 7.1 analog outputs.

Thanks friend! My set up is 5.1 and receiver is Rotel RSX-1057. I found out too late that the HDMI (v1.1) on this unit carries video only. (From Rotel: RSX-1057, 1067 and any models prior: To decode Dolby True HD and DTS-HD you will need to connect multi-channel analog outputs from your HD Media Player to multi-channel inputs on your Rotel product. This will utilize the internal decoding capabilities of your player allowing you the audible benefits of the lossless codecs).

Since I don't really understand this stuff, is the Panny 85 the best option for my non-hdmi-audio and for possible ugrading in the future? I am not prepared to buy a new receiver so I need to find a player that works best with what I have. Thanks!

From what I gather all players hooked HDMI through AV Amps must be PCM and through a HDCP/HDMI port in order to pass a 7-1/5-1 signal so that the AV does the decode process. Since you don't have that function it appears that optical passed from the 85 already decoded would be the choice. I am no expert so if I am wrong...please correct me There is a thread about this on the forum

It is really simple. Have the Panny 85 (or any other BR player) set to decode all audio to PCM. That is compatible with HDMI 1.1 and your Rotel will accept both video and audio on that format. From the Ultimate A/V review of the RSX-1057: "There are two HDMI inputs (version 1.1, which means multichannel PCM from Blu-ray and HD DVD players is a go)....." Hello all. I'm planning to put together a home theater soon on a tight budget and am starting from scratch. I'll be getting an Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 8350 projector with a 100 or 110 inch screen and a 5.1 audio system to be run through a receiver. To keep costs low I want to get a blu-ray player for about $200 or less. I figure at the cost I could buy a better one in about a year without it hurting.

What I would like the player to have is: play basic blu-rays and DVD formats, good upconversion of DVDs, and wifi with apps (Netflix, Pandora, etc). i would fast load speeds put I'm willing to put that aside. I have found some close matches but I think I am missing the DVD upconversion. Any recommendations would be very helpful?

LG BH200 super multi-blu does NOT have 5.1 analog audio outs. The older BH100 had them, but they dropped them in the 200 series.

Does the word "Universal" used in the chart mean that the player is Pal/NTSC? Or am I wrong?

Aside from the Oppo line (as I already have the DV983H), I am looking for sub u$s 300 Pal/NTSC Blu ray player?

And is there any with region codes unblocked?

You're wrong. "Universal" in this chart means that the player will play SACD and DVD-A discs, in addition to BD, DVD, CD, CD-R music discs (and usually mp3 files on a CD-R data disc).

My receiver, a Yamaha RX-V367, does not have TrueHD and DTS-HD support. I might be in the market to purchase a BluRay player soon. What does this mean for me? Will i not hear any audio because of this?

If your A/V Receiver has HDMI inputs then you can get a blu-ray player that has internal decoding and it will send the the decoded audio signal to your A/V Receiver and you can get the high resolution audio codecs that way. You can run a toslink cable or coaxial digital cable to your A/V Receiver and still get Dolby Digital and DTS if your receiver has these connections. You can also buy a Blu-ray player that has 5.1 or 7.1 analog outs and connect these to the 5.1 or 7.1 inputs on your A/V Receiver if you have them and get the high resolution audio codecs that way. If your receiver is so old it only has stereo inputs then you can connect the stereo analog connections and get stereo.

I have a Yamaha RX-V367 receiver. Its the most current model however it lacks the TrueHD and DTS-HD. It does however have four HDMI inputs. I have HDMI and Toslink cables available to use.

Do most BluRay players have TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding? I was planning to purchase a cheap LG BluRay player.

*edit* i just checked and the lowest end LG BluRay player (BD530) has TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding. If most BluRay players have decoding, why do most people prefer a receiver that does it also?

I don't know if most people prefer it in their receivers. But a player that has it does not need to have 7.1 analog outputs for use with receivers that don't decode those codecs, so the player is cheaper to build.

With the Yamaha RX-V367 you can not get either Dolby TrueHD or DTS HDMaster. It cannot process either of the lossless codecs over HDMI and it has no multi channel analog inputs should you buy a player that has analog outs. The best you can do is run a coaxial Toslink cable from the LG player to your receiver and you will get the lossy Dolby Digital and DTS tracks. These tracks may be lossy but they are less compressed than tracks found on DVD's and sound quite good. The LG you are interested only has the coaxial audio out, no optical that I could see from the picture on the Yamaha web site.

?? I believe the RX-V367 processes PCM over HDMI. So, as long as the player does the decoding, he gets the same lossless audio as he'd get with the receiver doing the decoding.

When I looked at the specs it appears to be HDMI switching only, no audio processing over HDMI, just a switch.

The HDMI repeater part threw me. I thought it was sales speak for we don't do audio, just video.

Repeater is the good one.

Pass-through and switching are the terms that mean no audio. Or, more accurately, they mean the receiver simply passes both video and audio through to an attached device without processing either of them in any way.

Pardon me cause the technical jargon got me lost. So the LG BD530 and Yamaha RX-V367 will work together in regards to TrueHD and DTS-HD if i hook up using HDMI?

Yes. Have the player do the decoding and send the resulting multichannel PCM to the receiver for processing.

Yeah, it's getting out of date. Maybe it's time to just have a list of players that don't decode the lossless formats.

One helpful feature is the info about which players have 7.1 analog outputs.

Sorry for being a newb. My wife purchased a Sony BDP-S570 for its internet connectivity. According to the chart at the top of this thread the Sony BDP-S570 has no analog outputs. Are analog outputs irrelevant if you are connecting directly to your AVR via HDMI 1.4a output?

You don't need analog outputs if you are connecting with HDMI. Any kind of disc that the 570 handles, including SACD, can have its audio transmitted digitally over HDMI to a receiver that can handle it.
