Aside from HDMI input number differences I seem to have discovered with the new models are:
Better GUI with fancier ipod menus.
Better LCD display.
Upconvert to 1080p from all sources (not sure about this one).
PQLS support (useless unless you have Pioneer equipment like the Bluray player).
Digital Core (21/23) vs Freescale "Digital Engine". Dunno what the upshot of that is.
More multi zone options. Useless to me probably.
HDMI 48-bit Deep Color. Not supported yet?
That's all I've got.
Did I miss anything and is there anything that the 01/03's are actually better at than the newer models?
FWIW, my observations are similar, although slightly different in a couple of instances, as noted below:
Better iPod/iPhone compatibility.
Will convert SD signals to 1080p, but not HD signals. (Unchanged from 01/03).
48-bit deep color instead of 36 bit, but since there is little if any consumer use for 36-bit, this "feature" is pretty meaningless.
Video processing may
be different. I've seen no reference to Faroudja DCDi this year. Actually, there wasn't much mention of it last year either, except for the logo on the top, so lack of mention in the promotional materials may not mean much (I don't recall what logos appear on the 21/23.).
Better LCD display? I wasn't aware of that. The 01/03 display didn't seem to need improvement in any case.
Of course, newer models usually benefit from a little tweaking by the manufacturer that they don't publicize.
Anyway, congratulations on your VSX-23. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. .
